(David Liao)

24 HOURS in TAITUNG | Taitung, Taiwan
I continued my trip down the east side of Taiwan to Taitung. It's a small town but there is a lot of interesting things to check out.
The Seashore Park is beautiful. The lantern around the Railway Art Village are cute. The Beinan Culture Park is super interesting.
I definitely think Taitung is a great place to stop by if travelling Taiwan.
Much love and happy travels

Ok, so I spoke a lot about this place being famous from a coffee commercial. In some aspects it is. But I later discovered that amongst the Taiwanese (women..?), it's more appealing due to an EVA Air commercial featuring a pin-up Japanese-Taiwanese actor. So, here it is:

Rice Field Art Festival Attracts Tourists in Taiwan
A rice field art festival got under way on Friday in Taiwan, attracting many tourists eager to take a look at the giant pictures made of colored rice.
The 2016 Pingtung Rice-field Art and Living Festival follows the success of last year's Line-themed Pingtung Picturesque Rice-field Art Festival, which lasted for 44 days and attracted 660,000 tourists.
The Pingtung County Government and Taiwan-based conglomerate EVA Group jointly unveiled a multi-colored 3D rice field at the festival.
Pingtung hopes to attract more international tourists by holding multi-colored rice field art activities every year.
The free event is open from 09:00 to 17:00 every day, and will run until May 8.

Taichung Launch & Kaohsiung Museum of Arts
Our cruise began with embarking on a dedicated train at Taichung’s Xinwuri Railway Station. Cruise-trippers could board at any TRA station between Taichung and Kaohsiung’s Xinzuoying Railway Station. South of Taichung the countryside opens up, our land-cruiser rolling through neat fields of paddy rice and colorful fruits and vegetables. In the background we could spot the jagged peaks of the central mountains, soaring ever higher toward the east.
The fun began in earnest on our Kaohsiung approach. The dedicated guide for our carriage formally introduced the trip, our group-travel rules, and our first sightseeing stop – the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (KMFA; ammpc.kmfa.gov.tw). At Kaohsiung’s Xinzuoying Railway Station the EZ Travel crew escorted us on a platform transfer and 3-stop ride by local commuter train to the Museum of Fine Arts Railway Station.
The KMFA is in 40ha Neiwipi Cultural Park, once the site of a large wetland and irrigation ponds. Among the park’s other attractions are the Children’s Art Museum, Sculpture Park, Ecology Park, and Austronesian Cultural Area. Walk the beautifully landscaped grounds, along the large, tranquil lake and pathways lined with Madagascar Almond trees, inspecting some of the 37 large-scale installation sculptures, which have English introductions.
The 4-story museum primarily celebrates contemporary works by Taiwanese artists, with a strong focus on creations by artists from the south, including indigenous artists. At the facility’s core is the Sculpture Hall, entered from the spacious first-floor lobby, which soars four stories high and is topped with a large skylight, draping the artworks in natural lighting.

From Travel in Taiwan magazine 2018-11-12:
By Rick Charette
Dulan village has established a reputation as a little bohemian paradise in the last decade or so. It is one of the East Coast’s largest Amis-tribe settlements and attracts many artists and surfing enthusiasts from the “outside world.” Locals say this means anywhere beyond the high central mountains that keep the East Coast so quiet, limiting the number of tourists.
The coastal highway does double-duty as the main drag, home to a growing collection of small bars, cafés, eateries, and shops that cater to the surfer/artist crowd. Taiwan’s biggest surfing event, the Taiwan Open of Surfing (taiwanopenofsurfing.org), is staged not far to the north, at Jinzun Fishing Harbor. It attracts top-tier talent from around the globe.
The sprawling, big-shouldered old Dulan Sugar Factory, at Dulan’s southern end, makes sugar no more. This protected heritage complex is today a creative oasis for local and expatriate artists and craftspeople. There are artist workshops, a cultural-creative boutique, a café, a craft brewery, Taiwanese and Japanese restaurants, a snack-food kiosk, a driftwood stage, and other attractions. The big action happens Saturday night, with free live-music sessions featuring both local (indigenous and Han Chinese) and expatriate talent.
The Amis people, Taiwan’s largest tribe, are spread throughout Hualien and Taitung counties on the East Coast. Each year villages stage Amis Harvest Festival celebrations in mid/late summer, and Dulan’s are among the most elaborate, spanning three days. Taiwan’s tribal peoples have been inviting tourists to these gatherings only since the early 2000s. Visitors to Dulan are welcome on the first two days, but the proceedings are more solemn, and photography is discouraged. It is the third day that draws the big crowds, with photography welcome. The colorful three-hour extravaganza kicks off with a grand march into the village recreational ground by members in full traditional regalia, followed by exuberant ritual singing and dancing. The street in front is lined with snack stands, a number selling tribal treats.
Inn By The Village
This is a handsome young boutique hotel located toward the southern edge of Taitung City’s central urban area. The owner is a senior citizen who loves cycling, and he built the hotel because he wanted upscale accommodation right in the city for his extended family when using it as a base. A testament to the facility’s quality and attractiveness is the fact that most balloonists from overseas taking part in the annual Taiwan International Balloon Festival stay here.
The hotel towers above the other local architecture. If you stay in a south-facing room you can enjoy an unobstructed view of ocean to the left, mountains to the right, and a meeting of the two far off in the center. Hotel amenities include Jenny’s Bar & Grill (Southeast Asian/American fusion restaurant/bar with live music on weekends), gym, gift shop/lounge, self-service laundry room, and bike storage.

Chiang Hsun: Being Rich is Having the Simplest Life
In 2014, deciding to stay away from urban life, Chiang Hsun left tv behind, used mobile phone less and moved to Chishang, a small village in the east of Taitung, with pens, ink, a few books and simple luggage. He lived in a 60-year-old dormitory where he kept the house almost the same as it used to be except changing the bed. He started working as the sun rose and rested when the sun went down, just like farmers. He found the natural laws of his body again. ‘Human only can’t live without earth, air and water, and I feel I’m so rich in Chihshang,’ said Chiang.

Traditional Chinese musicians perform on bamboo rafts at Taitung concert
Visitors to Taitung’s Chishang Township were treated to a unique concert on a pond last Saturday. It was like a scene out of the movies, as musicians plucked traditional Chinese instruments while balanced on bamboo rafts against a majestic mountain backdrop. The concert was part of a series of activities celebrating Chishang’s bamboo raft culture. Floating on bamboo rafts, musicians from the XinXin Nanguan Ensemble play traditional Chinese instruments. This beautiful scene comes straight out of a period film. Classical poetry and the breathtaking mountain backdrop here at Chishang had inspired the ensemble to hold this tranquil lakeside concert.Holding a concert on water is quite challenging. Boatmen have to keep their rafts stable to allow the musicians to concentrate on performing. Fortunately the weather cooperated so that spectators could sit outside and marvel at the sight.Chang Jao-chengChishang Township headThis year is the first time we did this. We brought together Dapo Pond and bamboo rafts and invited Empress of Nanguan Wang Xinxin and her XinXin Nanguan Ensemble to play nanguan pipa on a bamboo raft. The towering mountains behind Taitung’s Dapo Pond combined with the musical performance offered a feast for both eyes and ears.
