Garage Museum of contemporary Art, Moscow - A Place for People
The fourteenth edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano.Moscow provided an opportunity to make a return visit and take a fresh look at the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, the prestigious institution founded in 2008 by Roman Abramovich and Dasha Zhukova, now celebrating its 10th anniversary. This major milestone is being marked by an increasingly internationally based programme of exhibitions, workshops, site-specific installations and talks by leading figures in contemporary art (such as Damián Ortega and Anri Sala, for example). The events will valorise the historic collection, which documents the development of Russian art from the Fifties to the present day, along with the extraordinary premises, designed by Rem Koolhaas, right in the middle of Gorky Park.

Nicolas Tarkhoff: A collection of 130 paintings (HD)
Description: Nicolas Alexandrovitch Tarkhoff (Tarkoff) was a Russian-born Impressionist. Born in Moscow on January 20, 1871 to a merchant family he studied painting and drawing. Tarkhoff was known as the “Moscow Parisian,” because he spent so much of his life in France -- from 1898 until his death in 1930. A member of the World of Art and the Union of Russian Artists, Tarkhoff began drawing at the age of twenty-four. After an unsuccessful attempt to enroll at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, he studied under Konstantin Korovin. At the age of twenty-eight, Tarkhoff made his first visit to Paris, where he studied drawing and began actively working and exhibiting. He moved there permanently in 1899.
In 1906, he held a one-man show at the gallery of Ambroise Vollard, the famous Parisian art dealer who championed all the leading French Impressionists. Sergei Makovsky, Alexander Benois and Kazimir Malevich all wrote about Tarkhoff’s oeuvre. In his lifetime, his works were acquired by such famous connoisseurs of art as Schukin, Troyanovsky, Zeitlin, Diaghilev and Rothschild and artists like André Derain and André Lhote. In 1911 he purchased property in Orsay, France where he lived until his death on June 5th, 1930. He exhibited in the “Salon de Indpendants” in 1917, 11, 14, 19-21 and the “Salon d’Automne” in 1901 and 1913 and again between1923 and 1929.
The posthumous fate of Nicolas Tarkhoff was less illustrious. For many years, his name was excluded from the history of Russian art. The words of Sergei Makovsky, written in 1910 following an exhibition of the artist’s works at the editorial offices of Apollo, still remain relevant today: “Tarkhoff is still little known and poorly appraised in Russia. It is high time that we Russians understood that Tarkhoff is a great and original talent. It is time to bow down to his profoundly veritable, sincere and wonderful creativity.

avant garde artist Yulia Erokhina solo exhibition in Orel Russia 2017
Yulia Erokhina is an author with great creative and scientific experience: She has graduated from the law faculty of the Vladimir State Pedagogical University, she has got the degree of Candidate of Juridical Sciences and the long and fruitful work of the senior lecturer of the department of theory and history of law of the Higher School of Economics. At the same time Yulia was always interested in fine art, its history, materials, and techniques. Working out her scientific projects Yulia was developing her artistic talent and nowadays she has achieved serious success: she has more than ten solo exhibitions, participated in and won international creative competitions, the artist's works are in private collections in Russia and abroad. Also Yulia is a member of the Creative and Professional Union of Artists of Russia and the Moscow Association «International Art Fund». Erokhina is full of ideas, plans, she is constantly in labor and search, reflection and practical activity. Her irrepressible energy, both creative and simply human, impresses everybody. The artist’s nature miraculously combines the power of imagination, high intellect and positive life experience. In her work she addresses to many topics, to different emotional states. There are so many sources of inspiration that the author herself finds it difficult to determine the dominant of her creativity. «This can be a book as well, for example, I have an associative composition for the work of Venedikt Yerofeev «Moscow-Petushki», says Yulia, «there are associative compositions related to music. There are pictures that reflect the emotions of people, their life stories». But the main thing in all her works is a very sincere, deeply intuitive perception of reality. Everyone can see the things of the outside world but Erokhina abstracts his own painting space among all those subjects. A key feature of her work is the plastic form integrity under the most complex and unexpected constructions. The philosophical and visual beginnings merge here into a single whole, grow out of one another and their synthesis nourishes the originality and uniqueness of the artist's talent.

Description: Osip Braz was born in Odessa. After finishing classical school he entered an art school in 1889 and studied under K. K. Kostandi. He continued his education at Simon Hollósy school, and the Munich Academy of Arts in Munich from 1891to 1894. Afterwards he lived in France. It was at the Champ de Mars exhibition in Paris, where his works were displayed for the first time. Later the artist moved to Holland, where he studied contemporary European art and creativity by Dutch artists. Upon returning to Russia he studied in Ilya Repin’s studio at the Petersburg Academy of Arts.
In 1896 Osip Braz won awards of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers and got diploma of the Petersburg Academy of Arts. His portraits of the artists D. N. Kardovsky and E. M. Martynova were highly appreciated by critics, and the latter portrait was purchased by P. M. Tretyakov for the Tretyakov Gallery. Later the famous art collector ordered him portraits of Vera Komissarzhevskaya and Anton Chekhov.
Osip Braz participated in exhibitions of the Southern Russian Artists Association (1893 — 1917), the Moscow Society of Art Lovers (1896 — 1899), and the 36 Artists group in Moscow. He created a range of artists’ portraits.
Osip Braz was also into graphic art, lithography, and etching. In spite of the fact that the artist carried out lots of orders, he found time for teaching as well: Osip Braz taught in his own studio in 1900 — 1905, and at the Drawing School of Society for Encouragement of Artists in 1902 — 1904. Brilliant and famous Zinaida Serebryakova was one of his students.

In 1907 — 1911the artist lived in France. Osip Braz was elected the academician of the Academy of Arts in 1914.
Osip Braz was a member of the committee on restoration of paintings from the Hermitage Museum in 1916, and the custodian of the Dutch painting department in the Hermitage from 1918 to 1924.
In the 1920s he taught in VKhUTEIN.
In 1924 Osip Braz was arrested on false charges of espionage and buying paintings for selling them abroad, and was imprisoned in the Solovki Gulag camp. The artist was released in 1926 thanks to petition by Leningrad art associations; afterwards he was in exile in Novgorod, where he was engaged in restoration of monuments for the regional museum. In 1928 he immigrated to Germany, and then moved to Paris, where he painted and traded in antiques. The year 1930 saw his personal exhibition in Paris.
All his family members suffered from severe tuberculosis. After losing his wife Lola Lantsgof and both sons, he spent the last year of his life alone. Osip Braz passed away on November 6, 1936 and was laid down to rest at the Bagneux Cemetery in Paris.

My Life in Russia: Marco Bravura, famous Italian mosaic artist bringing beauty to Russian province
Being born in Ravenna, the capital of Byzantine mosaics, Marco Bravura, tomorrow’s great mosaic artist, was destined for this kind of creativity from the very beginning. He started to study the art of mosaics there and then continued his education in the art academy in Venice, where he resided for 20 years. His works are on display all over the world, including the Venice Biennale and porch European, US and Middle East exhibitions. After years of traveling and working all around the world, Marco found himself in Russia, after Russian Maecenas, Ismail Akhmetov, who wanted to restore the modern art of mosaics in Russia, had invited him. And after living here for 12 years, Marco and his wife Daniela have invested a lot into making the small town of Tarusa in the Kaluga region a real center for art and culture, restoring art school for children, a private culture house for concerts and modern art expos, as well as bringing the art of Italian mosaics to Russian culture and everyday life.
Together with this famous Italian artist, we dive into the forgotten art of Italian mosaics and explore the extraordinary world of beauty that the artist creates in the small Russian city every day with his own hands. “In Russia, I’ve found something that I can’t even express: the freedom to express myself, and a lot of inspiration that comes from Tarusa, the city of poets and artists, the Russian intelligentsia!”
We also visit the residence of Vassily Polenov, the famous Russian artist and draw the parallels between the Italian contemporary artist of our days living in Russia and the classics of Russian art from those who settled in the region 100 years ago.
