The Ando Museum opened in March 2013 in time for the second Setouchi Triennale in the Honmura town of Naoshima where it joins the buildings of the Art House Project as an additional magnet to contemporary art lovers. The museum is designed by star architect, Ando Tadao, who also designed most other museums on Naoshima.
The Ando Museum seems like a regular, traditional residence from the outside, blending in perfectly into the town's neighborhood. However, the inside of the building combines traditional interior design with Ando's signature use of concrete, creating a rather fascinating atmosphere. Explanatory signs and photographs along the walls document Ando's activities on Naoshima and elsewhere.

Japan Travel: Art Houses scattered throughout Naoshima island, Kagawa,02
Japan Travel:Art House Project focused from Nature, Art, People Naoshima, Kagawa,02
The Art House Project takes empty houses scattered about residential areas, and turns the spaces themselves into works of art, weaving in the history and memories of the period when the houses were homes. Meetings between visitors to the island and the island's people in places where they go about their daily lives also provide occasions for a variety of interesting encounters.
The art houses are scattered throughout town, and most of them are unassuming from the street, blending into the surrounding traditional Japanese neighborhood. The interior of each, however, has been given over to artists to convert into whatever suits their artistic vision.

Naoshima 直島 - Japó 日本
Naoshima is an island located in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan. It is renowned for its collection of contemporary art galleries and exhibits.
Naoshima is best known for the Benesse House complex. There has been extensive domestic attention to the Chichu Art Museum completed in 2006. The island itself has been settled as long as there have been Japanese. The original settlement is the now-diminuitive fishing port of Tsumuura. The most prominent settlement on the island is Honmura which was established as a coastal castle town (warring states) period (1467-1568). A number of houses in this town have been radically reformed in the Art House Project. Miyanoura

The Benesse House is a modern art museum and resort hotel located the southern coast of Naoshima Island. The complex is the centerpiece of the Benesse Corporation's art facilities on the island. It consists of four buildings: the Museum, Oval, Park and Beach, all designed by well-known architect Ando Tadao. Each building features its own unique artwork and guest rooms.
The main attraction of the Benesse House is its modern art museum, built on a hill overlooking the sea. This museum shows work created by many different artists from both Japan and abroad, that was inspired by the natural surroundings of Naoshima and the architecture on the island. Hotel guest staying at the Museum and Oval buildings can enjoy 24 hour access to the museum.
In addition to the art displayed in the museum and in the guest rooms, there are nearly twenty art pieces placed on the lawns and beaches around the Benesse House, including the famous pumpkin. Many of these can be found along the cliffs and shore below the museum, and have been specially designed to integrate into the natural surroundings in which they are placed.
The Benesse House has other facilities including restaurants, cafes, shops and a spa that are open to staying guests as well as day visitors. Hotel guests have the added privileges of exclusive restaurants and after-hours access to the museum. The Benesse House is the top level accommodation on the island, and room rates start from about 25,000 yen per night.

Japan Vlog • Part 2 • Naoshima, Michelin-Star Instant Noodles, Foot Sap Sheets
Hey everyone! I'm back with part 2 of our Japan vlogs. We took a quick 2-night side trip to Naoshima, which is a beautiful island filled with modern art. It was amazing, and I'd love to go back one day to visit the other islands. While in Naoshima, Hubby and I found some Michelin-Star instant noodles. I wish we had brought a bigger luggage so we could bring some back, but alas they were too bulky. Next time! We also tried foot sap sheets, which Hubby saw people buying up in boxes. Have any of you tried these before? Thanks so much for watching! x

Une famille au Japon: One day in Naoshima
After a wonderful trip on a ferry boat, we were surprised to discover a not so much visited island where works of art are freely scattered in nature and villages!

Artwork by Senju Hiroshi
One industry in Naoshima about a century ago was salt making. Ishibashi was originally built around 100 years ago as the home of a prosperous salt merchant. It has since been restored and houses two large paintings by Senju Hiroshi. One is painted onto the sliding doors of the main building, while the other, a large painting depicting a spectacular waterfall, hangs in the adjacent storehouse.

Poly Grand Theater
Anyway, You Cut It: A Pritzker Prize-winning architect carves tunnels through a concrete-and-glass box to create a bold theater complex for a burgeoning district in Shanghai. At the Poly Grand Theater in Shanghai, Tadao Ando puts his flair for drama to good use. Starting with his usual Platonic geometry—here a 330-by-330-by-113-foot box—Ando bores large tunnels vertically, horizontally, and diagonally into the form. The move seems aggressive, more like coring an apple than forming holes in Swiss cheese. The cylindrical tunnels meet the concrete structure's aluminum-and-glass curtain walls at various angles to create elliptical shapes on all four facades. On the inside, the tunnels produce a similarly theatrical experience for visitors coming for operas, concerts, plays, and other events. The Poly Theater's look-at-me gestures are intentionally bold. Ando's office says the design “was expected to provide a certain landmark quality.” The project is located in Shanghai's Jiading district, a newly developing area about 12 miles northwest of the city's center. It serves as part of the cultural heart of a new town; a library has also been completed nearby. An artificial lake on two sides and construction on the two others mark the theater building as an icon-to-be. Like many new cultural centers across China, this one aims to change the area where it's located from a backwater to a destination. Ando's design features five “tubes,” each pushing through the 602,000-square-foot building and serving a specific function. Most visitors will encounter two of these elements— a six-story vertical lobby tube and a two-story horizontal foyer tube—on their way from the entrance to the main theater. The lobby is accentuated by two eye-catching stairways that curve left and right like showpieces out of a 1920s Broadway musical. A bridge on the fourth level and windows on the fifth overlook the grand space. The lobby's square ceiling somewhat diminishes the bold impact of the cylinder, but its intersection with a circular skylight creates the kind of dramatic daylighting for which Ando is known. From the lobby, the foyer tube skillfully compresses the visitor's experience, allowing for an explosion of space when entering the theater proper. Three additional tubes—one leading to a covered, but not enclosed, the amphitheater on the ground level; one for an amphitheater on the roof; and one connecting the south side of the site to the main foyer—are active mostly for specific occasions. The connecting tube will link to a forthcoming commercial complex to the south where
Ando's design for a multi-use tower with hotel, office, and retail space is currently under
construction. All of the tubes are steel-frame elements independent of the building's
main concrete structure and have interior surfaces finished in aluminum rib-wall painted
to look like wood.
Inside the 1,600-seat main theater, the cylindrical theme continues. Bands of laminated
wood rib-wall at the orchestra level and up through two balcony levels provide a warm,
textured contrast to the more subdued aluminum and exposed-concrete finishes in the
bulk of the interiors. The theater's 12 box seats particularly revel in unabashed
curviness. Sun Jian of China Poly Group, the state-owned conglomerate that
commissioned the project, says he believes that the architectural acoustics of this
project is the best of the many theaters his company has built around the country.
Ando credits his acoustical engineer, Shanghai-based Zhang Kuisheng Acoustical
Design and Research Studio, for collaborating in making sure the sound quality in the
theater is excellent.
The building's main theater opened in September. A quiet water court off an indoor
exhibition room on the fifth floor is also completed and exemplifies the serenity for which
Ando is known. Many of the ancillary spaces—including a café, restaurant, and
multipurpose hall—were not yet open at the time of this writer's visit in February. And
the building's various covered terraces occupying the spaces inside some of the
building's giant tubes were not in use: they were roped off, as “public” areas often are
in China. It is difficult to predict how well they will be used.
It is similarly unclear how well the building will work as an icon for Jiading. Cultural
centers can be important place-makers in new towns in China that lack churches,
government halls, town squares, and other recognized nodes of urban life. But when
every new building—from a theater to a shopping mall—tries to be unforgettable, the
resulting cacophony can drown out even the strongest voice. Ando counters that the
Poly Theater has enough landscaped areas around it that it will not be so affected by its
neighbors. An even greater success would be that both the theater building and its
public space are not only visually engaging but also physically active. Only in this way
can any cultural complex become a real community center.
