Originally used to ward off evil spirits, fireworks (Japanese word- Hanabi) have a long history in Japan and are an integral part of Japanese summers. Hundreds of firework shows are held every year across the country, mainly during the summer holidays in July and August, with some of them drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators. On the other hand, fireworks are not typically used to celebrate New Year.
In past years, approximately a quarter of a million people have gathered to see 15,000 explosive projectiles shot into the night sky. Meriken Park is the main free spot for viewing the fireworks, but you can expect huge crowds.
The fireworks are launched from barges located between Kobe Harborland and Port Island.
Secondary attraction of Japanese fireworks is the relaxed festival atmosphere that comes with them, people dressed in yukata (summer kimono), and streets lined by food and game stalls. The firework shows themselves typically start some time after sunset and last one to two hours.
The competition for good viewing spots can be quite strong, and people often show up and reserve the best spots hours in advance, especially in cities where tall buildings limit the number of spots with unobstructed views of the fireworks.
While large cities like Tokyo and Osaka tend to have enough hotel rooms to accommodate festival crowds, smaller cities usually get booked out months ahead of popular fireworks together with nearby cities. The lack of hotel rooms can pose a particularly serious challenge if there are no more late-night train or bus connections back into a larger city after the end of the show.
Furthermore, crowded buses and trains can pose an inconvenience especially after the end of the show. Because of traffic congestions, it is often faster and more comfortable to walk from the venue back to the nearest station instead of using shuttle buses.
The first public firework display dates back to 1733 when fireworks were launched around the Sumida River to honor the souls of the one million people who had died the previous year due to extreme poverty as well as provide some entertainment to the general public.
Most fireworks worldwide are packed in cylindrical shells resulting in a fountain shape when they explode. In Japan, they are most commonly packed in a round shell resulting in a more or less round display upon explosion.
Most famous fireworks are conducted at Tokyo, Osaka and Kobe.

My Life in Japan: Water Park and Fireworks!!
Kobe like most places in Japan have many interesting events during the summer break. This is just one of them. Plus, it was so hot out, going to the water park made sense. Recently, I have been studying japanese so much, that I haven't had time for anything else. So spending time with my baby and the firework show was a great day for me. When I look back later, I can watch this video and smile:)

Being from England, we have a specific day for fireworks in November, so you would think we would be pretty good at it... and you would be wrong. It's usually a small box of fireworks set off in the garden in the pouring rain. Things are a little different here in Japan. There are 100s of fireworks displays throughout the summer all over Japan and this is one of the biggest.

The area where the residence of a mid-level samurai of the Edo Era had been built has remained unchanged. You can observe this historical landmark which brings to mind the lifestyle of that period through places like the 270-year-old residence and the garden.

This video also includes 'Budo', the 1935 video Produced by the Asahi Newspaper Company under the supervision of Takuma Hisa.
The Spirit of Budo read by Takuma Hisa.
Takuma Hisa (久 琢磨 Hisa Takuma, 1895 – October 31, 1980) was a prominent Japanese martial artist, early student in Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu of both Sokaku Takeda and aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba.
Born in Kōchi Prefecture, Japan; in his youth, he was a sumo wrestler. He was captain of the sumo club at Kobe Business School (now Kobe University) and won the All-Kansai Student Sumo Championship. He later became the director of General Affairs at the Asahi News in Osaka. He was advised to learn the technique of Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu for self-defense and was introduced to Ueshiba, becoming one of his early prewar students. Later (in 1936) he studied directly under Takeda when the latter came teaching at the Asahi News dojo. He received the Kyoju Dairi (teaching certification) a year later and was awarded the Menkyo kaiden rank in 1939, directly from Takeda. He later became one of the most prominent teachers of Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu. In 1959, he established the Kansai Aikido Club to teach the techniques of Ueshiba and Takeda. Hisa is also remembered for compiling a catalogue of techniques from photographs taken at the Asahi News dojo featuring both Ueshiba and Takeda. The catalogue constitutes today an invaluable historical source for the early development of aikido. He also held the rank of 8th dan in sumo and 5th dan in judo.

Stinky Sushi Eating Challenge: One Year in a Bucket ★ ONLY in JAPAN
If you think day old sushi is bad, try YEAR OLD SUSHI! That's exactly what Funazushi is, a local delicacy still made in the traditional way, the recipe dating back over 1000 years. With Japanese, it's notoriously sour, totally evil tasting and the smell ... ? Well, that's what I'm here to find out. In this episode, I will try to conquer my fears and eat some very old fermented sushi to see if this famous food lives up to its reputation as being Japan's grossest.
Funazushi is part of the Narezushi category of sushi, the other category being Hayazushi.
Let me explain. Hayazushi is the sushi we know today, a piece of raw fish on top of vinegar rice with a little wasabi. Hayazushi only came about in the early 1800s. Narezushi is the original sushi with origins going back a millennium. It's fermented in rice for a year, compressed with a heavy stone so that all air is kept out. Shiga prefecture's Funazushi is made in the original method used many generations ago which means ー this is ancient food!
If you want to try what people ate 1,000 year ago, THIS IS IT!
The challenge is on! Can you take down a plate of year old funazushi?
Where is Shiga Prefecture and Otsu?
GOOGLE MAP:
It's a quick 10 minute train ride from JR Kyoto Station.

So you want to try Inoue-san's funazushi? You'll want to go here:
志じみめし 湖舟
Open from 10am to 4pm
In Japan, you can order it from Inoue-san and send it to your hotel, if you're crazy enough.
Special thank you to the wonderful staff of BIWAKO OTSU TOURISM ASSOCIATION
Contribute to the community SUBTITLES :) you'll be marked as a collaborator to this video and help thoe in your country understand the history of Funazushi! (Thank you!)
