PACIFIC: TAHITI: MISS TAHITI BEAUTY CONTEST
Eng/French/Nat
The annual Miss Tahiti beauty pageant has become a major social event in the tropical island paradise.
Thirteen finalists from all over French Polynesia competed for the title - and the sure possibility of lucrative deals for the winner.
The 1995 Miss Tahiti beauty pageant took place Friday night in the Tahitian capital of Papeete after six months of preparation.
Contestants arrived from all over French Polynesia to compete in the event.
The thirteen women came from all social classes in French Polynesia - some just eager to win a prize for their beauty, some hoping to win the main purse of about five-thousand U-S dollars.
It is well known in the islands that the pageant will translate later into lucrative contracts for the contestants - whether a commercial deal or perhaps the catwalks of Milan.
A member of the pageant committee said that the young women were representative of the different islands.
SOUNDBITE:
Yes, from the Raiatea, Bora Bora, the Marquesas Islands, from Moorea - most of them are from the islands.
SUPER CAPTION: Dominique Petrass, Miss Tahiti Committee
The event was filled to capacity by spectators who paid 50 U-S dollars a head to attend.
The pageant has become a highlight of the social year.
The winner of last year's title, Vaea Olonda, was upset about handing over the title and limelight to the new queen of the pageant.
SOUNDBITE: (in French)
I can't say that I'm happy because I feel a bit sad, but I have to do this - so.
SUPER CAPTION: Vaea Olonda, Miss Tahiti 1994
The main event began with the contestants wearing traditional costumes from their islands.
Then - as in beauty pageants all over the world - the young women had to parade infront of the crowd in bikinis.
But the twelve judges have to also give marks on personality not just on looks.
Traditional Tahitian dancers - Tamure (Tam-U-Ray) - of all ages also entertained the audience.
There was a mixed reaction backstage before the final results were announced.
VOX POPS (in French):
#1: Q: Are you nervous?
Yes.
#2: Q: Are you all nervous?
No.
Timeri Baudry of Tahiti island became Miss Tahiti 1995.
SOUNDBITE: (in French)
I hope to represent in the best way possible Polynesia and the Tahitian woman.
SUPER CAPTION: Timeri Baudry, Miss Tahiti 1995
But the pageant has also opened up doors to possible fame and fortune.

Oceania Bora Bora South Sea Music
Polynesia is a subregion of Oceania, made up of more than a thousand islands scattered over the central and southern Pacific Ocean. The indigenous people who inhabit the islands of Polynesia are termed Polynesians, and share many similar traits including language family, culture, and beliefs. Historically, they had a strong tradition of sailing and using stars to navigate at night. Internationally, Polynesian music is mostly associated with twinkling guitars, grass skirts and beautiful relaxing sounds, Hawaiian hula and other tourist-friendly forms of music. While these elements are justifiably a part of Polynesian history and Polynesian culture, there is actually a wide variety of music made in the far-flung reaches of Polynesia.
