An artist with a yearning for the future



When the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon) assembled over 400 works for a major exhibition to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Almada Negreiros’s birth, one of the aspects that most impressed visitors was the diversity of work he produced.

Painting, ceramics, mosaics, stained glass, drawings, caricature, scenography, film, plays, literature, poetry, essays, dramaturgy and ballets were the “instruments” the artist used to compose one of the most remarkable “scores” in 20th-century Portugal.

A man of his era, the art he left us reflected not just his innate talent, but also the influence of the Modernist movement, which was born at the start of the last century and endured, in Portugal, until the 1970s. The Modernists advocated an unrestricted, non-compartmentalised art in which techniques could intermix freely to create something new.

This incessant quest was the key to its “extraordinary artistic dispersal”, as its surprising eclecticism was described at the time. Not by chance, two years before his death, at 75, Almada created a mural entitled Começar [Beginning] for the Gulbenkian Foundation. More than a title for a new artwork, Começar is a statement. It reveals the attitude to life of this intrepid Portuguese Modernist, who was also a leading figure of the Futurist movement which urged a break with the past and a celebration of modern technology and geometry, the artistic expression of mathematics.

Born in São Tomé and Príncipe on 7th April 1893, José Sobral de Almada Negreiros moved to Lisbon with his family as a child, where he spent most of his life. He went to a Jesuit-run school where he developed an interest in the classics, but he never had any formal training in the arts.

Even without encouragement, his vocation soon became evident. His first works were humorous drawings and his first signed work dates from 1911. As a youth, he frequented the debates in the Baixa district of Lisbon and became familiar with leading figures in the art world and intelligentsia, such as the poets Fernando Pessoa and Mário de Sá Carneiro, and the painters Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso and Santa Rita Pintor. With them, he formed the Orpheus Group, responsible for the introduction of Modernism in the Portuguese arts and letters.

While still a young man (1919), Almada was drawn to Paris where the Modernist movement was in full swing. For about a year, he wrote and painted there while doing a wide variety of jobs to sustain himself.

He only left Portugal again in 1927, when he settled in Madrid. During that time, he socialised with the poet Garcia Lorca, the filmmaker Luís Buñuel, and met Marinetti, the founder of Futurism. During his stay in Spain, he created artwork for the Ciudad Universitaria de Madrid and was responsible for decorating the San Carlos and Barceló cinemas and the Muñoz Seca Theatre.

Though irreverent and, as a leading member of the Orpheus Group, set on giving “public taste a slap in the face”, as the Russian poet Mayakovsky, one of Modernism’s advocates, proclaimed, Almada Negreiros was never a political activist. An important part of his work was commissioned by architects and engineers working for Portugal’s dictatorial Estado Novo (New State) (1926-1974), such as Duarte Pacheco and Pardal Monteiro, but through it contributed decisively to the building of 20th-century Portugal.

On Day 25 of our Round The World Trip with Star Alliance we were in Lisbon, Portugal. Along with visiting some famous attractions in Lisbon, nothing compared to having one of the best seafood meals of my life at the legendary Cervejaria Ramiro.

1:48 Elevador de Santa Justa - Located just a short walk from Praça de D. Pedro IV (Rossio Square), the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Santa Justa lift is a historical elevator that you can ride to the top for a great view of Lisbon. Since I was in the area and it wasn’t busy I decided to go for it. Price - 5 EUR

4:31 Castelo de São Jorge - From Praça da Figueira we took the bus up the hill to Castelo de São Jorge, which is one of the top things to do in Lisbon. After paying the entrance fee, we walked around the castle, which is situated on the top of one of Lisbon’s hills as a citadel. The views of the surrounding area and the castle itself were spectacular. This is a must visit attraction in Lisbon. Price - 8.50 EUR per person

8:01 Epic seafood at Cervejaria Ramiro - If you ask anyone where to eat the best Portuguese seafood meal in Lisbon, undoubtedly the number one response you’ll hear is Cervejaria Ramiro. It’s a seafood palace of a restaurant that’s popular with both locals and tourists alike, everyone comes for the abundance of incredibly fresh seafood. It actually almost feels like a Chinese restaurant when you’re eating at Cervejaria Ramiro from the liveliness and the fresh seafood tanks. We started off with some prawns in garlic sauce and then ate clams in garlic and then had crab. The crab roe was intensely amazing, and I’ve never seen a crab with so much roe in my life. Next we had some of the greatest shrimp / prawns I’ve ever seen. I ordered 2 tiger prawns which were the size of lobsters, and then 2 scarlet prawns, a type I had never eaten before. Both were incredibly delicious, some of the best prawns and seafood I’ve ever tried. Finally, my last seafood dish at Cervejaria Ramiro was a plate of goose barnacles and some oysters. For steak at Cervejaria Ramiro one of the popular things you have to eat is called a prego, which is steak sandwich. After eating all that seafood, somehow the steak sandwich hits the spot. Our total price - 108 EUR for everything we ate and ordered.

26:23 Lisbon Cathedral - The Lisbon Cathedral is one of the first cathedrals and earliest buildings in Lisbon, and it’s a fantastic sight to see.

27:31 Rua Augusta Arch - After walking around the Lisbon Cathedral we then headed to the main plaza of Lisbon and walked around the Rua Augusta Arch and got a nice view of the Tagus river.

29:10 Piri piri chicken at Frangasqueira Nacional - Finally to end this amazing day of Portuguese food and attractions in Lisbon, we headed to Frangasqueira Nacional to try their piri piri chicken. It’s just a small takeaway restaurant, but the passion of the owners is evident. The piri piri chicken was awesome. Total price - 14 EUR

This was probably my favorite day of our trip to Lisbon, with a perfect mix of incredible Portuguese food, especially seafood at Cervejaria Ramiro and visiting attractions in Lisbon.

Lisbon did not disappoint us and we fell in love with it instantly. Here's a list of absolute must do's when you visit Lisbon - this covers sights, activities and food recommendations.

LISBON: Alfama - oldest district (1/5) Portugal

Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal), spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus/Tejo river. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning hot fountains or baths. It contains many important historical attractions, as well as an abundance of Fado bars and restaurants.

Overlooking the Alfama is the medieval Castle of São Jorge, offering the best views of the city.

On the slopes of Alfama there are terraces/viewpoints ('miradouros') from which to see the city, like the Miradouro de Santa Luzia (near the church of the same name and over remnants of the Moorish city walls) and the Miradouro das Portas do Sol.

Near the Miradouro de Santa Luzia is located the Museum of Decorative Arts (Museu de Artes Decorativas), a 17th-century mansion with magnificent interiors.

Among the churches of the Alfama are Lisbon Cathedral (12th–14th century, oldest of the city), the Convento da Graça (18th century), the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora (late 16th–18th century), and the baroque Church of Santa Engrácia (17th century), now converted into the National Pantheon ('Panteão Nacional'). Here important Portuguese personalities are buried, like presidents of the republic and writers.

It’s one of the oldest cities in Europe and offers wonderful glimpses into Portugal’s layers of time and influence – come with us on an adventure through Lisbon old town and highlights from the city's rich, colourful past.

In our vlog, filmed at Christmastime, we share itinerary and tips on what to see and do in 'Lisbon old town' (Alfama, Castelo and Graça) including cobbled streets and amazing views from Castelo de São Jorge, Largo das Portas do Sol and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte.

Rossio and Baixa are very central areas, also filled with Lisbon old town charm. Take a look through Lisbon’s riverfront gateway sitting below Alfama, with bustling trams, Elevador de Santa Justa and the pretty Praça do Comércio to name just a few top things to take in.

Bairro Alto and Chiado are particularly good for dining and nightlife. These areas are within easy walking distance of Rossio and Praça do Comércio – all of this is close together and simple to explore on foot.

20 things to do in Lisbon, Portugal | Top Attractions Travel Guide:

Our first stop of the day was Sao Jorge Castle, which is an old Moorish fortification that sits on a hill overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. You can get some nice panoramic views of the city from here, and they also have peacocks roaming the grounds.

Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the many look out points in Lisbon that offers postcard-perfect views of the city. This particular terrace overlooks the Alfama district and it is always popular with tourists.

Carmo is a mediaeval convent that was ruined during the 1755 earthquake, and today it is used as an archaeological museum. It's a strange feeling walking down the ruined nave of the church and seeing blue skies above your head, but that's exactly what makes it worth a visit.

Another place to visit is Belem Tower. The tower was built on the banks of the Tagus River, and it was meant to act as both a defense system and a ceremonial gateway into Lisbon.

The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most visited sights in Lisbon. It's one of the best examples of Late Gothic Manueline architecture, so have a close look at the intricate detailing when you visit.

A fun way to get around Lisbon's hilly streets is by riding the trams. There are different lines across the city, but #28 is the most popular one with visitors.

The Santa Justa lift is an elevator that connects the lower streets of Baixa with Carmo Square, and it is the only remaining vertical elevator in Lisbon. Though it is meant to serve a functional role, it is also quite popular with visitors who find the elevator a novel idea.

We had such a great time exploring Lisbon in Portugal. Our first day we visited the National Contemporary Art Museum and explored the city with it's great architecture, monuments, statues and vast squares.

Portugal is a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain. Its location on the Atlantic Ocean has influenced many aspects of its culture: salt cod and grilled sardines are national dishes, the Algarve's beaches are a major destination and much of the nation’s architecture dates to the 1500s–1800s, when Portugal had a powerful maritime empire.

In the mid-Atlantic, Portugal's volcanic Azores islands are popular for trekking and whale-watching. The island of Madeira is known for a mild winter climate, its namesake fortified wine and trails along mountain aqueducts. On the mainland, capital Lisbon has São Jorge Castle atop the medieval Alfama district, with views of the Tagus estuary. To the south are the whitewashed villages and wild beaches of the Alentejo. In the north, Porto has cobbled streets and port wine cellars by the river. Inland from there are villages of the Minho and steep, terraced vineyards of the Douro.


Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city. From imposing São Jorge Castle, the view encompasses the old city’s pastel-colored buildings, Tagus Estuary and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge. Nearby, the National Azulejo Museum displays 5 centuries of decorative ceramic tiles. Just outside Lisbon is a string of Atlantic beaches, from Cascais to Estoril.

The city’s compact, cobblestoned heart is easily explored on foot or via its old-fashioned trams and funiculars. The Moorish Alfama district has narrow, winding streets and taverns with fado singers. Chiado and its cafes, shopping and seafood restaurants adjoins Bairro Alto, known for nightlife. The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum complex, set amid serene gardens, displays noted art collections. On the waterfront are the ornate 16th-century Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, and, to the east, the ultramodern Parque das Nações district and its massive Oceanário aquarium.

Exploring Emotions Lisboa

Ending on a painting exhibition, this 12 documentary series explores people emotions and the questioning. Instead of creating an art piece I decided to put people to think and make them the own creators, making them the own art piece of this creation.

Considering that nowadays spiritual practice is more and more overcome with daily routines, allowing that the same routines prevail on interior thoughts and spiritual thinking, the questioning about a deeper thought may allow us to have a different look in creative thinking.

This art project wishes to eternalise people as part of their own creations, allowing spontaneous thoughts or a spiritual thinking to be as much inspiring process as a work of art.

Before we go on any travel adventure, we always view a couple of YouTube videos about our destination. ‘Walking around’ videos are arguably our favorite type of travel videos, that’s why we wanted you share one of Lisbon with you today.

In a bitesize chunk of three minutes, you can get a glimpse of the old town of Lisbon, the districts Bairro Alto and Alfama.

I was in Lisbon Portugal for a month and after exploring the city... I came up with my 6 MUST EAT places. These are not your five star restaurants or the most expensive places... No... these are places that are unique to Lisbon. Places that are fun, and that will leave you with a story. Hope you enjoy and see below for details and some more places that you should visit!

Finding Illegal Chinese:
To find these under the table place you can type Illegal Chinese into Google maps and a few places should pop up. There are a variety of these and they all have a different flare to them.

More Places to Visit:
1. LX Factory: Former industrial complex that is now an art/food district. Great for walking around. Go to Rio Maravilha for an epic rooftop view and drinks.

2. The Memmo Alfama hotel: Go for a rooftop meal and drinks. One of the coolest rooftop spots in the city.

3. The Vintage hotel: The spot at the end of the video. Great hotel with a retro vibe and secluded rooftop.

4. As Bifanas do Afonso: Very traditional beef sandwich spot that only locals go to.

5. Pink Street: If you're looking for the party street in Lisbon. Pink street is your place.
