Toy & Miniature Museum's Toytisserie | Arts Upload
It has been 18 months now since Kansas City’s Toy & Miniature Museum shut down to redesign its displays and take on a new identity.
When they re-open August 1, it will be known as the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures, and the focal point of the entryway will be a spinning metal ribbon covered with all kinds of playthings. Producer/Videographer Julie Denesha has been watching as the world’s only Toytisserie takes shape.

Weston Teruya: Miniature Possibilities | YBCA Bay Area Now 6
Artist Weston Teruya creates miniature worlds in paper sculpture to expose hidden histories. For Bay Area Now 6, he reconstructs a historical Poor Farm in Downey, CA to trace societal dynamics in spatial arrangement.
About Weston Teruya:
Weston Teruya works primarily in drawing and sculpture. In his work, he reconfigures the arrangements of images and objects from the built environment to examine how they shape social relationships and imagine how those dynamics might be transformed. Weston received an MFA in Painting and Drawing and MA in Visual & Critical Studies (Visual Criticism) from California College of the Arts. Weston Teruya has exhibited artwork at Patricia Sweetow Gallery and Intersection for the Arts in San Francisco, the de Saissett Museum in Santa Clara and the di Rosa Preserve in Sonoma. In 2011, he is exhibiting at Pro Arts in Oakland and the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. Weston has had residencies at the Montalvo Arts Center and Oliver Ranch Studio Artist Residency and was a recipient of a 2009 Artadia grant. He is a part of the Curatorial Committee at Southern Exposure and is curating a show there in early 2011.

Bay Area Now debuted in the summer of 1997 as a much needed platform for assessing the state of the visual arts in the San Francisco/Bay Area region, and to bring to the public's attention the work of exceptional artists active in the local art scene. Throughout the triennial's almost fifteen-year history it has continued to be the barometer of what is happening in the arts by placing new work into the limelight making it available to the general public. At each historical juncture, Bay Area Now has played a significant role in providing a platform, by marking the interplay between contemporary art and other innovative activities that have come to define the region.

The team , led by Michael Swords and Robert Powell, produced a work that is now in 65 university libraries and is recommended for all of them. The nearly 1000 footnotes in the book point to government documents and other primary sources, nothing speculative, so the data is bulletproof.
Bio: Richard Thieme (thiemeworks.com) is an author and professional speaker focused on the deeper implications of technology, religion, and science for twenty-first century life. He speaks professionally about the challenges posed by new technologies and the future, how to redesign ourselves to meet these challenges, and creativity in response to radical change. His speaking generally addresses “the human in the machine,” technology-related security and intelligence issues as they come home to our humanity.
Thieme has published hundreds of articles, dozens of short stories, five books with more coming, and has delivered hundreds of speeches. His pre-blog column, Islands in the Clickstream, was distributed to thousands of subscribers in sixty countries before collection as a book in 2004. When a friend at the NSA told him, The only way you can tell the truth [that we discuss} is through fiction, he returned to writing short stories, one result of which is Mind Games, a collection of nineteen stories about anomalies, infosec, professional intelligence and edgy realities. More edgy realities are illuminated in the recently published and critically extolled “UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry” to which he contributed, a 5-year research project using material from inside the military and intelligence communities to document government responses to the phenomena from WW2 to the present. It is in the collections of 65 university libraries.
Many speeches address creativity, shifts in identities, and technology-related security and intelligence issues. Richard keynoted the first two Black Hats and spoke in 2017 at Def Con for the 22nd year. He has keynoted conferences around the world and clients range from GE, Microsoft and Medtronic to the National Security Agency, the Pentagon, FBI, US Dept of the Treasury. Los Alamos National Lab, and the US Secret Service. His work has been taught at universities in Europe, Australia, Canada, and the United States, and he has guest lectured at numerous universities. He addressed the reinvention of “Europe” as a “cognitive artifact” for curators and artists at Museum Sztuki in Lodz, Poland, keynoted “The Real Truth: A World’s Fair” at Raven Row Gallery, London, and keynoted Code Blue in Tokyo with “Fiction is the Only Way to Tell the Truth: Life in the National Security State.”

Imagining New Eurasia
Kyong Park is professor of Public Culture at University of California at San Diego where he has taught since 2007.
Park views art as a process of inquiry, examination and articulation of cultures, and a visual language of communication rather than a commodity of productions. The Imaging New Eurasia project imagines new relations between East and West, and a renewed identity of Eurasia.
Park is active in a wide range of works on public culture, including research, documentation, and representations focused on the urban landscapes that delineate the economic, political, and cultural borders and territories of the contemporary social geography.
Working in visual arts, architecture, theory, and curatorial practices, Park incorporates text, photography, video, installation and new media into his works, a practice that is rooted in research, participation, and activism in public spaces.
His first project was the founding of StoreFront for Art and Architecture in New York, an internationally respected exhibition space that he directed from 1982-1998. He then founded International Center for Urban Ecology in Detroit, producing workshops, urban initiatives and videos, in collaboration with activists, community organizations, and universities.

We live in the Anthropocene Era where the world’s ecosystems and geological processes have been profoundly altered by human activities. It is a state where the nature that was here before us, has irreversibly changed into a nature that has its form and expression, as a result of our way of consuming natural resources. We have interfered in nature’s processes so that they are no longer the nature we once knew. Our nature is a new nature; a nature that we are the co-creators of. In this condition, what is the role and the meaning of landscape architecture? For one, the traditional distinction between nature and culture can no longer be preserved. What is needed is a new approach to landscape architecture, where landscape architecture is that which can bring a new order into our built environment; which can establish the grown environment as equal and complementary to the built environment; and which can reestablish our aesthetic sense of nature and make us aware that nature is not a threat we must fight against, but the central aspect of what creates a fully livable community. That we have to model our new world After Nature.
Stig L. Andersson founded SLA Architects in 1994. Having studied nuclear physics, Japanese culture and chemistry before becoming an architect, Andersson graduated from The Royal Danish School of Architecture in 1986. From 1986-1989 Andersson moved to Japan with Japanese ministerial research funds. Andersson was particularly interested in Japanese culture’s relationship with substance, space and changeability – fields he has integrated and developed in his own practice since 1994.
Stig L. Andersson is SLA’s founding partner. Beginning as a (purely) landscape architectural practice, SLA has developed into an international interdisciplinary organization working with city nature, urban design and nature-based solutions. Renowned for his sensuous and poetic work, Andersson combines unique amenity values based on the aesthetics of nature with cutting-edge sustainable city solutions and ecosystem services.
Stig L. Andersson is a professor in aesthetic design at the University of Copenhagen and is a much sought-after lecturer and teacher at universities and architecture schools in Europe, Asia and the United States.
Stig L. Andersson has received numerous national and international awards for his work, including The European Landscape Award, The RIBA Award, The World Landscape Architecture Award, and in 2014 the C.F. Hansen Medal – the highest national honour given to a Danish architect awarded by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.
