Cardiovascular Innovations John Laird
John Laird, What's New at the Center for Vascular Medicine
Leading vascular specialist named director of UC Davis Vascular Center
John R. Laird, a leader in the field of peripheral vascular intervention, has been named as the medical director of the UC Davis Vascular Center, which is dedicated toward providing state-of-the-art vascular care and promoting collaboration among the different specialties involved in the treatment of patients with vascular disease.
Laird is an internationally renowned interventional cardiologist who has lectured and performed endovascular procedures around the world. His practice focuses on interventions for carotid artery disease, abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysmal disease, renal artery disease, and peripheral artery disease.
Dr. Laird is highly regarded around the world for his work on the endovascular treatment of peripheral artery disease, said Claire Pomeroy, Vice Chancellor of Human Health Sciences and dean of the UC Davis School of Medicine. With his expertise guiding the development of our Vascular Center, we will have an enormously valuable resource for patients in the Sacramento region. Dr. Laird also has an impressive track record in the areas of educating trainees as well as pursuing innovative, groundbreaking research.
Laird's many areas of leadership and innovation include the investigation of new stents for carotid and peripheral vascular applications and the development of laser angioplasty. He uses the Excimer laser as a tool in complex peripheral interventions and in limb-salvage cases. UC Davis Health System will acquire a laser this summer, which will allow the Vascular Center to add laser angioplasty to its clinical services. In addition to his clinical activities, Laird is known for teaching vascular interventions to other physicians, and for organizing and conducting clinical trials of new therapies for vascular disease. Laird has published extensively on the subject of peripheral vascular intervention. His other research interests include the evaluation of covered stents for peripheral vascular applications, carotid artery intervention, and the use of embolic protection devices, stent-grafts for the treatment of abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms, and gene therapy/therapeutic angiogenesis.
Laird most recently was the director of Peripheral Vascular Interventions at the Cardiovascular Research Institute and Co-director of the Center for Vascular Care at the Washington Hospital Center, both in Washington, D.C. He also was a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center. Laird completed his undergraduate education at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1980 and received his medical degree from Albany Medical College in 1984. He completed his internship and residency in 1987 at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, and then completed a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology in 1990 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He served as the director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories and director of Interventional Cardiology at Walter Reed from 1991 to 1996. He also was an assistant professor of medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
The UC Davis Vascular Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive care to patients with atherosclerosis and other vascular problems, such as aneurysms, vein disorders and less common vascular conditions.
The primary goal of the UC Davis Vascular Center is to promote a comprehensive, collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to treating vascular disorders. A key emphasis of the center is to enhance collaboration among different specialties, allowing both established and emerging diagnostic and therapeutic methods to be applied, thus increasing efficiency and reducing risks to patients. Among the specialties that will participate in the UC Davis Vascular Center are vascular and cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, interventional radiology, endocrinology and nephrology.
Vascular disease management, as it is currently practiced, is often fragmented and inefficient. Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease manifested through a variety of symptoms, yet the treatment of this systemic disease has traditionally been provided by physicians who concentrate on isolated signs of the illness in discrete vascular territories. The UC Davis Vascular Center's team-based approach will address the many facets of a patient's vascular disease as the systemic disease that it is, instead of allowing it to be treated by multiple, competing vascular specialists without such a global perspective.
What Does Sugar Actually Do To Your Body?
The effects of sugar can take your body down a vicious cycle known as metabolic syndrome. UC Davis' Kimber Stanhope altered the diets of a group of volunteers for her study. Instead of her subjects eating food like rice, pasta or bread, she had them consume a sugary beverage. The effects on the body started in the liver and from there Stanhope explains how that set off a chain of responses in the body.

Time Lapse - BC Highway 99, the Entire Route northbound (incl. Sea to Sky Highway!)
Welcome to BC Highway 99! It may not be the longest highway in the province, but it's definitely one of the most important and most unique! From a freeway to major downtown arterial to two lane highway in the middle of nowhere, Highway 99 as it all!
Starting at the Peace Arch on the Canada/United States border, where it meets Interstate 5, Highway 99 acts as the southern gateway into Metro Vancouver, connecting to its southern suburbs of Richmond, Delta, and Surrey, as well as the United States and the rest of the Americas.
After crossing the Fraser River twice - above and below, the only single road to accomplish such a feat - the 41 km freeway turns into city streets (such as Granville Street and Georgia Street) to tranverse the largest city in Western Canada (and Canada's third largest), Vancouver.
Crossing the iconic Lions Gate Bridge brings Highway 99 to Vancouver's North Shore, where it piggybacks on the Trans-Canada Highway to Horseshoe Bay, where it veers off to become the world-famous Sea to Sky Highway.
Following the southernmost fjord on the west coast of North America, Highway 99 hugs the cliffs overlooking Howe Sound on its way to Squamish, then ascends from the sea to the sky on its way to Whistler, Canada's premier ski resort and, paired with Vancouver, the host of the 2010 Olympic games.
Beyond Whistler - and even moreso, Pemberton - Highway 99 is much less travelled but no less beautiful. From 1992 onwards, the stretch beyond Pemberton, known locally as the Duffey Lake Road, extended Highway 99 across the rugged and untouched terrain of the Coast Mountains to Lillooet on the Fraser Canyon - an arid desert landscape.
From there, Highway 99 follows the Fraser Canyon and the former alignment of the Cariboo Road to Pavillion, then veers east to finally meet up with the longest highway in the province, Highway 97, where you can turn left for the Yukon and Alaska or turn right for the Okanagan and California.
Adventure awaits on Highway 99! All set to classical music!

Cardiovascular Innovations Reggie Low
Reginald Low, former director of the Mercy Heart Institute in Sacramento and a nationally recognized clinical investigator in cardiology, has joined the faculty at UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center as chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine.
A cardiovascular specialist with more than 20 years of experience in patient care, Low seeks to incorporate the best of leading-edge technology with the highest quality of patient care at UC Davis Medical Center. His research focuses on coronary artery disease and developing minimally invasive methods of diagnosis and treatment.
A former UC Davis medical student, intern, resident, fellow and faculty member, Low said he is excited about the opportunity to return to UC Davis, where he can treat patients and train the next generation of physicians.
This is a tremendous opportunity for me to return to an academic setting where I can help a larger number of patients by teaching doctors of the future, Low said. It's my goal to build on the strengths within the division at UC Davis to develop a highly recognized, state-of-the-art cardiovascular service.
Low is specifically interested in using new less-invasive diagnostic modalities to examine coronary arteries. These include electron beam ultrafast CT, new generation helical CT, and magnetic resonance angiography. He has also been involved in the development of percutaneous coronary revascularization, a family of techniques that re-establish blood supply to the heart by using standard balloon angioplasty (PCTA), intracoronary stenting, and other approaches.
His appointment comes at an exciting time for the UC Davis Medical Center as it prepares to expand its cardiology services with the addition of two new cardiac catheterization labs and 36 additional cardiac telemetry beds.
Frederick J. Meyers, professor of medicine and pathology and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, said Low's skills as a superb educator as well as clinical investigator make him an ideal match for UC Davis' growing cardiac program.
Under Low's leadership, Mercy Heart Institute developed into one of the finest heart centers in the western United States, Meyers said. He is a nationally recognized clinical investigator who has worked alongside investigators at academic medical centers throughout the country to improve the care of patients with heart disease. We are lucky to have him.
A native of California, Low was born and raised in Stockton and attended UCLA as an undergraduate. He then attended the University of Pacific School of Dentistry and later graduated from UC Davis School of Medicine in 1975, where he completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology.
Low remained at UC Davis for a year as an assistant professor in cardiology before moving to Kentucky where he was director of the Coronary Catherization Laboratory and Coronary Care Unit at the University of Kentucky Medical Center and the VA Medical Center. He returned to the Sacramento area in 1983 and took over as director at the Mercy Heart Institute at Mercy General Hospital from 1989 through 1997.

“The Black Sonrise: Oakland Unified School District’s Commitment to Address and Eliminate Institutionalized Racism”
Vajra M. Watson, EdD, director of research and policy for equity in the UC Davis Division of Student Affairs, made this talk on November 18, 2015, as part of the African American and African Studies Brown Bag Lecture Series at UC Davis.
Watson’s scholarship is focused on holistic reform efforts for chronically under-performing schools. In particular, Dr. Watson focuses on the interplay between social stratification and individual agency, giving attention to the ways we can break the cycle of social reproduction among disenfranchised students and replace it with social resistance. She is the founder of Sacramento Area Youth Speaks (SAYS), a literacy program that pairs poet-mentor educators and teachers together to develop grassroots pedagogies, forming a critical bridge between the classroom and the community.
Watson is the author of Learning to Liberate: Community-Based Solutions to the Crisis in Urban Education (2012), Censoring Freedom: Community-Based Professional Development and the Politics of Profanity (2013), The Black Sonrise: Oakland Unified School District’s Commitment to Address and Eliminate Institutionalized Racism (2014), and Literacy is a Civil Write: The Art, Science, and Soul of Transformative Classrooms (2015), among others. In addition, Watson serves on a number of Board of Directors, including as Board President for United Playaz in San Francisco and as a Board Member for Fathers and Families of San Joaquin in Stockton, CA.

OGDEN — Limit your driving, don’t exercise outdoors and don’t burn wood in your fireplace. That’s the message the Utah Division of Air Quality wants to get out to the public this weekend. On Thursday, Weber, Davis and Box Elder Counties were all in the orange zone, meaning people with health problems should avoid exertion outdoors. The same is expected for Friday. “If you are a person with a compromised immune system, you should probably avoid any prolonged outdoor exertion,” said Donna Spangler, spokesperson for the Department of Environmental Quality. “That usually includes people with heart and lung problems or asthma and we have quite a large population with asthma. Children can also be affected by the bad air because they breathe in more air than adults. Elderly people are also advised to stay inside.” Dr. Douglas Jones, an allergist at Rocky Mountain Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, said with the air quality being so poor, people really should exercise indoors if possible. “Poor air quality can create problems for healthy people and those with underlying sinus or lung diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are at even higher risk,” Jones said. “Poor air quality increases the chances of people developing sinus and lung infections, even in healthy people.” A mandatory ban on solid-fuel burning, open burning and all outdoor burning has also been issued through Friday. Those who disregard the ban can expect to pay a hefty penalty fee of up to $299 per day. On Saturday, things are expected to improve slightly, with the mandatory wood burning ban to be lifted to a voluntary status and the air pollution moving into the yellow or moderate zone. “Even though we are expecting a yellow day on Saturday and a lift on the ban, we are still asking people not to burn wood,” Spangler said. “We are also encouraging people to drive as little as possible. If you can, travel in carpools or telecommute and if you have errands to run, do them all at once. Every time you start your car you release pollution into the air. The air also tends to get worse after the morning commute, which is why you tend to see the numbers go up later in the morning.” Air quality is monitored hourly by the DEQ, Spangler said. Several monitoring stations are located throughout the state. Weber and Davis County both have three monitoring stations to keep track of the particulate matter. On Thursday, the particulate matter was between 35 and 55 micrograms of particulates per cubic meter. Dr. Brian Moench, of Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment said the air quality in Utah is a real concern and can contribute not only to worsening symptoms, but can affect those who are otherwise healthy. “Air pollution impairs exercise capability, even in the very fittest of individuals. Even in young, healthy adults air pollution increases biomarkers of inflammation and thrombosis and increases blood pressure and heart rate,” Moench said. Air pollution causes the same kind of low grade inflammation that smoking cigarettes causes only to a lesser degree, he said. Everyone is affected whether they realize it or not. The inflammation and the actual pollution particles can go far beyond the lungs, distributed by the arterial system, and can reach any organ in the body. For many people the end result may not be any symptoms of ill health, but that inflammation accelerates the aging process and shortens people’s life span. “However, for other people numerous diseases can be either caused by or exacerbated by the pollution. In adults the end result is higher rates of heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia, and other lung diseases,” Moench said. “In children respiratory infections are often the most common outcomes, but pollution can also trigger ear infections and numerous other types of bacterial infections, like appendicitis.â€...

Leveraging Randomized Clinical Trials to Generate RWE for Regulatory Purposes - Day 1
David Diamond - An Update on Demonization and Deception in Research on Saturated Fat...
This lecture is part of the IHMC Evening Lecture series.
For the past 60 years there has been a concerted effort to demonize saturated fats, found in animal products and tropical oils, and cholesterol, in our food and blood. Despite the well-established health benefits of diets rich in cholesterol and saturated fat, flawed, deceptive and biased research has created the myth that a low fat, plant-based diet is ideal for good health. I will deliver an update on a talk I gave 2 years ago at the IHMC in Ocala, which will provide a historical perspective on how poorly conducted epidemiological research, U.S. government intervention and misinformation conveyed by contemporary lifestyle researchers have contributed to the current state of confusion on dietary influences on health. In addition, I will discuss how biased research has created the false appearance that high levels of serum cholesterol cause heart disease. I will describe how researchers have used deceptive statistics to give health care providers and the public the false impression that statins produce a dramatic reduction in the incidence of cardiovascular disease and mortality. I will point out that the miniscule benefits of statins are offset by their well-documented adverse effects, such as promoting the development of type 2 diabetes, cognitive impairments, cataracts, muscle pain and wasting, and increased incidence of cancer. This talk will serve as a wake-up call for the public to educate themselves as to how to optimize their diet and cardiovascular health.
David. M. Diamond received his Ph.D. in Biology in 1985, with a specialization in Behavioral Neuroscience, from the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory at the University of California, Irvine. He is a professor in the Departments of Psychology and Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida, where he has directed his research program on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Diamond has served on federal government study sections and committees evaluating research on the neurobiology of stress and memory, and has over 100 publications, reviews and book chapters on the brain and memory. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous medical journals and has received 30 years of federally funded support for his research. In the past decade, Dr. Diamond has expanded his research program to include cardiovascular disease and nutrition. His controversial research is an extension of an advanced seminar he directs at the University of South Florida entitled “Myths and Deception in Medical Research”, which emphasizes the critical evaluation of methods and conflicts of interest in health-related research. In recent years he added to his list of publications controversial papers on diet, cholesterol and statins, including one paper published in the peer-reviewed medical journal “Expert Review of Clinical Pharmacology”, which described the deceptive practices employed by researchers promoting statins for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Diamond has been invited to present his myth-busting views on nutrition and cholesterol to lay people and physicians at nutrition, cardiology, obesity and diabetes conferences all over the world.
