Henry VIII Arms the Royal Navy with Cannons
Henry VIII inherited a force of some 15 ships, and continued expansion in great ships (e.g., the Mary Rose), with cannon firing through gunports in the sides of a ship, an idea taken from Portuguese and Spanish shipbuilding; infrastructure (including Trinity House) and facilities apace in expectation of war with France. In 1512 Sir Edward Howard took over as Lord Admiral, and attacked on 10 August, with inconclusive results despite a memorable slugging match between the English Regent and the French Cordelière resulting in the destruction of both. Additional combat in 1513 resulted in the death of Sir Edward, and his brother Thomas Howard took his place. In 1514 the 1,500-ton carrack Great Harry was launched, the first English two-decker and one of the earliest warships equipped with gunports and heavy bronze cannon. Henry also commissioned the Anthony Roll (now in the Pepys Library), a survey of his navy as it was c.1546, from which comes much of the pictorial evidence for his ships.
Henry VIII initiated the casting of cannon in England. By the late Elizabethan age (see the Aldernay wreck survey) English iron workers using blast furnaces developed the technique of producing cast iron cannons which, while not as durable as the prevailing bronze cannons, they were much cheaper and enabled England to arm its navy more easily.
The Spanish Armada (Spanish: Grande y Felicísima Armada or Armada Invencible, literally Great and Most Fortunate Navy or Invincible Fleet) was a Spanish fleet of 130 ships that sailed from A Coruña in August 1588 under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia with the purpose of escorting an army from Flanders to invade England. The strategic aim was to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I of England and the Tudor establishment of Protestantism in England, with the expectation that this would put a stop to English interference in the Spanish Netherlands and to the harm caused to Spanish interests by English and Dutch privateering.
In the end, 67 ships and fewer than 10,000 men survived. Many of the men were near death from disease, as the conditions were very cramped and most of the ships ran out of food and water. Many more died in Spain, or on hospital ships in Spanish harbours, from diseases contracted during the voyage. It was reported that, when Philip II learned of the result of the expedition, he declared, I sent the Armada against men, not God's winds and waves.
The Battle of Trafalgar (21 October 1805) was a naval engagement fought by the Royal Navy against the combined fleets of the French andSpanish Navies, during the War of the Third Coalition (August--December 1805) of the Napoleonic Wars (1803--1815).
The battle was the most decisive naval victory of the war. Twenty-seven British ships of the line led by Admiral Lord Nelson aboard HMS Victorydefeated thirty-three French and Spanish ships of the line under French Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve off the southwest coast of Spain, just west of Cape Trafalgar. The Franco-Spanish fleet lost twenty-two ships, without a single British vessel being lost.
The British victory spectacularly confirmed the naval supremacy that Britain had established during the previous century and was achieved in part through Nelson's departure from the prevailing naval tactical orthodoxy, which involved engaging an enemy fleet in a single line of battle parallel to the enemy to facilitate signaling in battle and disengagement, and to maximize fields of fire and target areas. Nelson instead divided his smaller force into two columns directed perpendicularly against the larger enemy fleet, with decisive results.
In the Battle of Panipat (1526), Babur's guns proved decisive in battle, firstly because Ibrahim Lodi lacked any field artillery, but also because the sound of the cannon frightened Lodi's elephants, causing them to trample Lodi's own men.
New tactics introduced by Babur were the tulghuma and the araba. Tulghuma meant dividing the whole army into various units, viz. the Left, the Right and the Centre. The Left and Right divisions were further subdivided into Forward and Rear divisions. Through this a small army could be used to surround the enemy from all the sides. the Centre Forward division was then provided with carts (araba) which were placed in rows facing the enemy and tied to each other with animal hide ropes. Behind them were placed cannons protected and supported by mantlets which could be used to easily maneuver the cannons. These two tactics made Babur's artillery lethal. The cannons could be fired without any fear of being hit, as they were shielded by the bullock carts held in place by hide ropes. The heavy cannons could also be easily traversed onto new targets, as they could be maneuvered by the mantlets which were on wheels.

Almost every British battlegroup in Afghanistan has its own dedicated memorial to soldiers killed in action. Now Royal Artillery Gunners have unveiled a special site of remembrance at Camp Bastion for their own. The names of 17 Gunners who have lost their lives in Afghanistan - six from the 29 Commando Regiment that he commands - were read out at the unveiling.

Welcome Home Parade, Royal Artillery, Esher
On Friday 18 February 2011 at 1030hrs a composite battery of soldiers from across the Royal Artillery marched through Esher.
The Parade started at Esher Police station, continued down Esher High Street and ended at Sandown Park in time for the Royal Artillery Steeplechase Meeting at Sandown Park. The Battery, together with some Royal Artillery equipments were accompanied by The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, The Royal Artillery Band, The Pipes and Drums of 19th and 40th Regiments Royal Artillery, old comrades from the Royal Artillery Association and the Army Cadet Force.
The salute was taken by the Master Gunner St James's Park, General Sir Timothy Granville-Chapman GBE KCB, accompanied by, the Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey, Brigadier Hood and the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Barry Cheyne.
The people of Surrey turned out in force to show their appreciation for the courage, dedication and professionalism of our Armed Forces.

Onlookers would have been excused for thinking they were witnessing the production of a scene from a film during events on the Hoe.
But yesterday's spectacle was in fact part of a traditional send-off for 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery's departing Commanding Officer.
Lieutenant Colonel Neil Wilson has served on and off at the Royal Citadel-based regiment since 1992.
