Hill 60, Ieper (Ypres) Belgium
Hill 60, so named because of the map contour around the site, is located about 2 miles south east of Ieper. In the Great War, its height and location made it a focus of fighting on the Ypres Salient.
Of particular note, although not so clear in this 2D video, is the current undulating nature of the preserved Hill 60 site. It is full of concrete bunkers but also vast areas of mine and artillery craters.
No doubt, Hill 60 was both an important location to hold militarily but a damned awful place to hold and live.
Corrections to commentary:
1. I keep saying Hill 62!! This is Hill 60.
2. I have been advised by Simon (Belgium) that the large above ground bunker seen in this video is Aussie made not German.
Please take a look at Video History Today , the first web site to offer unique collections of re-usable original video clips designed for teachers and students.
The idea behind Video History Today is to give schools the raw material to make mini-documentaries and video essays on historical subjects.
Initial packages focus on World War I (Somme and Ieper areas), The Holocaust, the American Civil War and D-Day & Normandy 1944.

A German shell bursts near British cavalrymen in Flanders, Belgium, during World War I
A line of British cavalrymen ride down a hillside, single-file, in Flanders, Belgium, during World War 1. A German shell explodes near the cavalry column, just as two of the British soldiers on horseback pass the spot. After the smoke clears, fallen men and horses are seen on the ground. Other cavalrymen continue past them, as a British soldier, from near the camera position, runs down the hill to render aid. (World War I; World War 1; WWI; WW1) Location: Flanders Belgium. Date: 1917.

WW1 Ypres - Nonne Bosschen - 13th FAB - Stuart Curry
Walking in the footsteps of my Grandfathers 2008. WW1, The Great War, Western Front, Belgium. This area was the most significant to five of my family members because they almost all died here. All three Marchment's were in the 14th MGC. 5th Division. My Grandfather Henry John Marchment and his two younger brothers Robert Westall Marchment and Stan Hastings Marchment. Stan was killed and three others from German heavy artillery during the Battle of Polygon Wood 26th September 1917. The 5th Division took Polygon Wood and the 14th MGC held the Butte with their Machine Guns until relieved. The 5th Division Artillery had to move the guns up to this area for the next battle. The Curry brothers both ranked as Gunners in the 51st Bty, 13th FAB are next to move into this area for the commencement of the Battle of Broodseinde Ridge, 4th October 1917.

WW1 - Shrapnel Charlie 2008 - Polygon Wood - Belgium
Shrapnel Charlie (Ivan Sinnaeve) in his workshop showing how to make lead soldiers out of WW1 melted shrapnel balls. He is known all around the world for what he does and a niece bloke with a good sense of humour. Johan Vanhaverbeke a local teacher was kind enough to take me to his house and show me what he does in his spare time. Ivan gave me a lead Australian soldier at Menin Gate a few days earlier and I was able to bury it deep within the gravesite of Stan Hastings Marchment at Belgium Battery Corner Cemetery. Very Grateful for this action and I will remember him for that.

A selection of clips (without commentary) showing the inside of the World War One Langemark Cemetery in Belgium.
The Langemark cemetery, the 'German Soldier Cemetery', is the final resting place for over 44,000 German soldiers who dies in the First World War. It contains a large number of grave plots (with 8-10 men per grave) as well as large mass graves for nearly 30,000 soldiers.

Passchendaele Sunset Ceremony 12 Oct 17
New Zealand’s Sunset Ceremony to mark the Battle of Passchendaele was conducted at the hauntingly beautiful Buttes New British Cemetery in Polygon Wood as the sun went down on 12 October, 2017.
In front of the New Zealand Memorial to the Missing, the NZDF contingent performed a musical piece entitled Passchendaele. This re-enacted the events of 12 October, 1917, from the artillery barrage to the machine guns, the dead and dying and, finally, the knock on the door back in New Zealand of the telegram boy with the terrible news to a devastated wife and daughter. It was an emotional end to a special day of commemoration.

In this film you will see some wonderful stone carving on some WW1 grave stones, which it would be great to carry into a woodworking project at some stage.
Otherwise it is a departure from the usual woodworking, but I will be back to that next week ...its just that here in the UK we are making the 100 year anniversary of World War One, and given Sarah's personal research into tracing family members who died in WW1, I thought it would be good to share that, and to remember all those courageous people who were affected by the war.

Hill 60
Visiting Hill 60 starting at the peaceful pond, once the crater after the explosion of the mine, on one side of the railroad track.
On the other side, the monuments, the site itself still showing scars caused by the artillery, the remains of some bunkers … a place to meditate …
The Durand Group - recovery of live munitions - the legacy of WW1.
What you are seeing is the sheer quantity of war detritus and a fraction of the live ammunition recovered by French EOD specialists during an investigation of the ST19-ST21 German mining system at Vimy Ridge in 2006. It came from a 100 metre square sweep at a depth of only 18cm. Mick Hibberd of the Durand Group describes a few of the more interesting finds recovered at the time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since 1998 The Durand Group - a voluntary association dedicated to researching and investigating subterranean military features - has been recording and interpreting the underground war on the Western Front during WW1. This includes the disarming of live mine charges left over from the conflict, many of which exist in deep tunnels below the old battlefields.
