Cambodian crafts and traditional Khmer art at Siem Reap, Artisans d'Angkor
Artisans Angkor is a Cambodian social business whose purpose is to create job opportunities for young people living in rural areas, while reviving at the same time traditional Khmer craftsmanship such as stone and wood carving, painting on statues and on silk, lacquering, and silver plating.
A training center has been set up to bring back the glory of ancient Arts and Crafts of the Angkor region. Stone and wood carvings are the skills which are mostly renowned in the Siem Reap region as they recall the nearby pagodas and Angkor temples with their famous bas-relief carvings. Most temples in the region of Angkor that were built in the 11th-12th centuries have such carvings.

Artisans D'Angkor Tour and Phare Cambodian Circus in Siem Reap Cambodia with Club Adventures
Our visit to Artisans DAngkor was a pleasant surprise. Not on our itinerary, we asked to be taken somewhere to do a bit of shopping. Instead of taking us to a generic souvenir spot, our guide brought us here. Authentic, local, and inexpensive. Highly recommended. We also got a chance to check out the Phare Cambodia Circus which was an experience to remember.
Club Adventures is a small group travel company powered by AAA. They believe in creating unscripted travel moments and utilize local guides to give each tour a local perspective. Here is the tour that I did if you want to check it out!:

Artisans Angkor - Presentation of the silk collection In the Mood for Boheme
This fashion show organized by Artisans Angkor on February 21st, 2013 in Phnom Penh displayed a family silk clothing line called 'In the Mood for Boheme', which is a capsule collection designed in collaboration with Euro-Asian fashion designer Magali An Berthon, who used to work for Kenzo.
From this partnership, a brand new and refreshing silk wardrobe for the whole family was born at Artisans Angkor. Magali An Berthon's inspiration was taken from floral moods, urban contemporary trends, with of course a touch of Boheme, her signature style.
This collection of silk clothing and accessories was made by hand by craftsmen and women in Artisans Angkor workshops in the Cambodian province of Siem Reap, next to the Angkor temples.

Artisans d'Angkor Silk Farm 2
Artisans d'Angkor is a wonderful organization. They make and sell beautiful and high quality silk creations and other hand made Cambodian craft objects. The employees are all at-risk men and women who are taught a trade and given the chance to become economically self-sufficient.
In this video you can see how the silk thread is put onto the bobbins that will later be used to weave silk cloth.
In 2007, I made my first, but not my last, trip to Cambodia. This trip was to Siem Reap to see the temples of Angkor Wat and to do some so-called 'voluntourism'. I was touched more than I ever could have imagined by the beautiful and indomitable spirit of the Cambodian people.
I became close to my tuk tuk driver and his family. Now I am trying to spread the word about how wonderful a visit to Angkor Wat can be and how transformational an experience it can be to get to know the Cambodian people.
I made a return trip this past September. This time I spent 4 days in Phnom Penh and then 10 days in Siem Reap again.
If you go, I know a great driver for you! See the informational website I have put together for my friend the tuk tuk driver (
