TOP 10 BEST CITIES TO SETTLE IN CANADA AS NEW IMMIGRANT
416-962-2623 / 1-866-760-2623
immigroup.com
So you've applied to come to Canada as a permanent resident but you don't know exactly where you should live. Everyone has heard of Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, but who knows if those are really great cities to start your new life. This list looks at big cities in Canada that are most accessible to new immigrants.
The richest city on this list, West Vancouver is a suburb of - you guessed it - Vancouver! It is surprisingly affordable for the renter: the average rent price in the city puts it right in the middle of the pack; it's actually cheaper to rent in West Van than in Milton! The unemployment is relatively low, well over a third of the population are immigrants, and it of course features the warmer temperatures that the Vancouver area is known for. So what could possibly be wrong? Well, on average it takes about 8 years to save up enough money to buy a house. So if you're thinking of starting out in West Vancouver, be sure to check out the rest of the list to find out where to move once you've made some money in Canada.
Looking for a job? The rapidly expanding city of Milton may be the place to move. Though it's a bit of a hike from Toronto - nearly an hour drive in traffic and significantly further by train - Milton boasts very low unemployment; the lowest among the immigrant-friendly big cities in the country. There aren't as many immigrants in Milton as there are in some of the other cities on this list, and the rent isn't exactly cheap, but it's hard to say no to jobs. Unless you're concerned about safety: Milton's crime-rate isn't exactly low.
The nation's capital is a safe bet. Predicted by experts to see a boom in jobs in the near future, the capital is also pretty much in the middle in all livability factors: the rent and vacancy rates are reasonable, unemployment is higher than some places but should soon drop, house prices are about average, as is the time it takes to save for a house, and the city is safe with decent transit. But Ottawa is notoriously boring and cold, so keep that in mind.
Richmond Hill, a suburb of Toronto easily accessible from the city by transit or highway, has one of the highest percentages of immigrants of any city in Canada - nearly equal that of the larger and perhaps more intimidating Mississauga. The only thing keeping it from being higher on this list is the violent crime rate which, while low, is significantly higher than the cities listed below. Well, that and the fact that it takes significantly longer to buy a house in Richmond Hill than it does in some other cities: the length of time to save for a house is not West Vancouver bad, but it's close.
Looking for a cheap apartment? Well, the immigrant-friendly Montreal suburb of Brossard has them in droves. The vacancy rate is reasonably high and the rent is way lower than any suburb of Toronto or Vancouver. Plus, it has a way lower crime rate than the equally cheap - and even more immigrant-friendly - Dollard-des-Ormeaux, another of suburb of Montreal, located almost as close to the downtown core. Sure, you have to cross the notoriously traffic-jammed Pont Champlain to get from Brossard to Montreal, but Dollard just isn't as safe. Finally, the average resident of Brossard only has to save for three years to afford a house, and Brossard has the second lowest real estate prices of any major city in Canada.
Mississauga, the third largest city in Canada's most pop0lous province, is still considered by many to be a suburb of Toronto. That's because it is only a 20 minute drive from the downtown and a short trip by transit. Mississauga boasts a population of over 50% immigrants and a low crime rate. But it's still somewhat of a bedroom community despite it's size - meaning you have to drive everywhere - and the employment rate doesn't compare favourably with the other suburbs of Toronto.
Markham is a suburb north of Toronto that is easily accessible from Toronto by transit or highway; it's right nextdoor to Richmond Hill. Markham has the second highest percentage of immigrants of any large city in Canada, with well over 50% of the population having been born overseas. The city boasts a high apartment vacancy rate and the rent is comparable to the other suburbs of Toronto. Markham is a pretty wealthy place too, meaning that it is a safe place to start your new life.

Earth-cooled, shipping container underground CA home for 30K
As a kid Steve Rees played in caves and learned how the earth could cool. As an adult, he buried two shipping containers and created an off-grid retirement home for himself and his wife Shirley.
After a few years of camping on their 10 acre plot in Northern California, they bought two shipping containers, hired an excavator and got to work. Doing most of the work themselves, their finished home cost them $30,000 (solar included). Their 640-square-foot space cost them less than $50 per square foot.
Rees explains that while this is less than conventional construction costs, the savings only begin with construction. With a solar-powered well, a bit of propane and solar tubes for most of their light, they haven’t had any city water or electric bills since 2002. Winter temperatures in their home (even during 20 degrees outside) never fall below 62 degrees (an RV catalytic heater is sufficient for heating). Even when the temperature rises to 110 outside in the summer, their home has never risen above 82 degrees.
When they asked the county about permitting they were told they “didn’t have a permit for burying containers”. They have been inspected since completing their home and they have a permitted septic system and a permitted well, just no permit for a single family dwelling.

Christmas Lights 2019 | Toronto Brookfield Place 2019 (Canada)
Brookfield Place is a landmark address epitomizing the commercial, cultural and social fabric of Toronto. every year this building decorated with lights for christmas and holiday season, each light setup have unique design. Brookfield Place is also home to the Hockey Hall of Fame and some of downtown Toronto’s most popular dining, shopping and lifestyle destinations
Below listed Architectural design description.
SNOWFALL: FROST
The work is inspired by the architectural motif of the Allen Lambert Galleria, the geometry of a single snowflake, and the allure of a freshly frosted-over window pane. Visitors to Brookfield Place are encouraged to touch Frost. Run your hand along the sculpture and you’ll see that you cast a shadow in the field of light, the same way you leave a trail when drawing on a frosted window.
SNOWFALL: GUST
The work is inspired by the architectural motif of the Allen Lambert Galleria, the geometry of a single snowflake, and the falling of snow through a gentle breeze. To arrive at the design of Gust, artist-team Studio F Minus considered how the Y-shaped structural members in the Galleria were inspired by fractal patterns occurring in nature. Gust is conceived in tandem with the artworks Frost in the Allen Lambert Galleria, and Flurry on the Concourse Level, to create a visual theme for the holiday season that stretches across all of Brookfield Place
SNOWFALL: FLURRY
Designed by artist-team Studio F Minus, the sculpture consists of over 2000 individual snowflakes snaking and billowing over 6000 square feet of the Concourse Level. Each snowflake is made of prism-like material, changing colours as the viewer moves through the space and creating a shimmering glow. Like Frost & Gust on the Ground Floor, the design of each snowflake is inspired by Brookfield Place’s iconic architecture, and highlights a conceptual connection between fractal geometry of the building to that of trees and crystals in nature.

REL-MAR Presents - Downtown Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Hamilton (2011 population 519,949; UA population 670,580; CMA population 721,053) is a port city in the Canadian province of Ontario. Conceived by George Hamilton when he purchased the Durand farm shortly after the War of 1812, Hamilton has become the centre of a densely populated and industrialized region at the west end of Lake Ontario known as the Golden Horseshoe. On January 1, 2001, the new City of Hamilton was formed through the amalgamation of the former city and the other constituent lower-tier municipalities of the Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth with the upper-tier regional government. Residents of the old city are known as Hamiltonians. Since 1981, the metropolitan area has been listed as the ninth largest in Canada and the third largest in Ontario.
Hamilton is home to the Royal Botanical Gardens, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, the Bruce Trail, McMaster University and Mohawk College. The Canadian Football Hall of Fame can be found downtown right beside Hamilton City Hall and across town to the east, the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats will begin playing at the new Tim Hortons Field in 2014, which is being built as part of the 2015 Pan American Games.
Partly because of its diverse environment, numerous TV and film productions have been filmed in Hamilton, regulated by the Hamilton Film and Television Office. A growing arts and culture community garnered media attention in 2006 when the Globe and Mail published an article called Go West, Young Artist about Hamilton's growing art scene. The article highlighted local art galleries, recording studios and independent film production.

The Best Places to Visit in Vermont, USA
The Best Places to Visit in Vermont, USA
Vermont is equal parts myth and reality. A mere mention of its name and images appear: sunlit meadows of black-and-white cows, dazzling white ski trails, tidy hillside farms, blazing red maple trees along a stone wall, covered bridges, buckets collecting sap for maple syrup.
Vermont is a place, but also a state of mind that revels in outdoor beauty, good food, and the preservation of unique small towns and cities. Visitors love Vermont for its colorful fall foliage; ski mountains like Killington, Manchester, Stowe, and Mount Snow; mountain vistas; and attractions for families and kids. Although Vermont is an inland state, it has beaches and water sports at the Lake Champlain, along with many lakes, streams, and swimming holes.
Yep, Vermont’s got it all. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Vermont.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Wausau (#308)
[Latest Airdate: June 29, 2017]
[Original Airdate: February 27, 2014]
Wausau is our first half-and-half community -- we shot half of the episode in the winter when it was zero degrees, and the other half in the summer when it was 100! But with extreme temperatures came extreme fun.
John didn't know of the many things there are to do in Wausau that start with snow. You can tube, board, shoe, sculpt, mobile, ball and cone (think about it...). And then there's ice -- skate, fish, race, curl and cream (that one was easier). And of course in summer, when all that melts, you have rushing waters perfect for kayaking and a mountain (well, a big hill really) perfect for hiking, biking and exploring.
But we didn't stay outside for the whole episode. It's comfortable year round at Carmelo's Supper Club, the Woodside Art Museum, Bull Falls Brewery, The Grand Theatre and Back When Café.
This episode has the distinction of being the most heavily McGiverned episode yet -- it's just about bursting with McGiverns!

Bold Ideas, Bold Action: Next Steps for the GTHA
Municipalities across the GTHA face many shared challenges. Ahead of last year’s municipal elections, the Institute on Municipal Governance and Finance (IMFG) published a series of essays from some of the GTHA’s most respected leaders offering bold ideas to push the region forward on key issues. On February 28, four of these leaders discussed their bold ideas in the context of a political landscape that includes newly elected mayors, councillors, and a provincial government set to table its first budget.
The panel included:
Daniele Zanotti discussing how strong neighbourhoods are essential to the GTHA’s future.
Marcy Burchfield speaking on how regional co-operation holds the key to regional prosperity.
Kofi Hope talking about the importance of youth equity for the future of the GTHA.
Tim Jones speaking on why the suburbs are key to the GTHA’s cultural vitality.
Alexandra Flynn, Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia’s Allard School of Law and a Fellow at IMFG, moderated a discussion with the panelists on how to execute their bold ideas, how to mediate between competing regional and local priorities, and how to ensure that all residents in the GTHA benefit from the region’s growth and prosperity.
