QUERETARO's night downtown in October 12th 2017
This is one night in my beautiful city of QUERETARO, in Mexico. My city is quite touristic and historical. It was the city where the independence document was signed. We have plenty of artistic shows to see, excellent gastronomic history, smiling people who usually like to help if you need something. The center of the city is the perfect place for a romantic date and dinner.
At the kiosk you can see people performing or dancing.
The woman in the Hidalgo Hotel is telling a legend. A story of a woman which killed Benito Juarez, former President of Mexico, who Mexicans consider him as a heroe. She gave to the ex President a magical poison called veintiunilla (veintiuno or veinty uno = 21) that after 21 days the one who drank it would pass away. And that was the way he died. The woman was called La carambada
JoLo World Vlog week 20 21 22: From Mazatlán to Cancún (Guanajuato, Querétaro, Cholula, Oaxaca)
These weeks we crossed Mexico from Mazatlán (Sinaloa) to Cancún, passing through the beautiful Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, (Santiago de) Querétaro, Cholula (Puebla), Oaxaca, and then three rough days on the road until Cancún, passing through Isla Aguada.
Guanajuato is a beautiful place among hills with colourful houses. Although arriving at the campground was challenging, we would not have changed it for anything else!
San Miguel de Allende has rather brown/yellow colours and is beautiful, but quite touristic.
Querétaro is a bigger city, but with a lovely historical city center and it feels like the university city it is.
Cholula and Puebla are full of history, and are surrounded by no less than 4 volcanoes!
Oaxaca hosts the famous Monte Albán, a pre-Aztec settlement. The city center is very beautiful, as well as the surroundings.
Being on the road between Oaxaca and Cancún was a bit more challenging. Nature is more tropical here, very beautiful.
Isla Aguada was a peculiar place next to the (stinking) sea, and we were glad to arrive at Cancún.
Taking the flight should have been easy, but that was a challenge in itself...!!!

Mexico Immersion Experience
The purpose of this field program is to introduce students to innovative research methods in the integration of archaeology, art history, ethnohistory, and ethnography. Mexico in general and the vast states of Oaxaca and Puebla in particular create an ideal research environment, where the indigenous cultures constructed monumental sites, ruled over city-states, invented complex writing systems, and crafted among the finest artistic traditions in the world, some of which are still perpetuated to this day. The clash of the Indigenous and the European worlds in the 16th century created a most unique culture, the legacy of which underlies the modern nation of Mexico. Rather than study these cultural regions as discrete units, this course is particularly interested in how social, political, and economic networks connected people through space and time. By traveling from bustling Mexico City through the mountains, valleys, and coasts of Oaxaca and Puebla, students will immerse themselves in this rich study environment to gain direct experience with archaeological, ethnohistorical, and ethnographic research methods and resources. The course further aims to provide insights into the practicalities of conducting academic research in Mexico, by visiting research institutes and hearing on-site lectures from local experts. A broader question to be addressed is how new modes of inquiry in archaeology can reflect on approaches more consistent with the logic inherent in the scientific method. This interactive course will thus link the past and present by exploring those surviving ancient sites and living communities which are directly referenced in the ethnohistorical records.
Opera flash mob surprises market vendors in Mexico City
(26 Aug 2018) A troupe of four opera singers surprised shoppers at one of Mexico City's markets, chopping beef while belting out romanzas, courting fruit vendors with arias or, in the case of the tenor, moving a woman to tears with lines like eyes that cry don't know how to lie from the Spanish-language opera La Tabernera del Pueblo.
The tenor is a market vendor himself: Francisco Pedraza sells shoes seven days a week near the Basilica of Guadalupe.
He trained to sing opera via private lessons from the age of 16 until 30, but he felt excluded from the tightknit opera circle in Mexico.
He performed when and where he could, often as a back up singer for bands that play regional Mexican music.
One day in June, the opera crew appeared at the market where Pedraza sells shoes for a soundcheck.
Pedraza, who is 50, approached the group's artistic director.
He auditioned on the spot and was invited to join the troupe.
Pedraza's wife runs the store while he's out singing.
The opera singers are on tour as part of a pilot programme that began in June and concludes in November.
Juan Carlos Diaz, coordinator of the community cultural action program for Mexico's national fine arts institute, says he is already planning more impromptu operas in 2019.
The idea is to awaken interest in the arts by bringing opera and dance performances to places where people gather, such as public markets and metro stations.
Diaz calls them spontaneous interruptions in social life.
The fine arts institute is also coaching kids to make puppets and other crafts at city museums.
The concept also taps into deep cultural roots for Mexicans.
Indoor markets are a modern adaptation of the open-air selling that has taken place in Mexico City since the days of the Aztecs.
Interaction with the crowd is key to the performances.
It's a way for onlookers to feel like they are part of the spectacle, to awaken an interest in the arts and to show Mexicans that fine art is within their reach.
The idea is to break down barriers and dispel notions that opera is only for elites.
The show wraps with the cheerful so-called drinking song from La Traviata.
