March 2004 - Gander Collegiate Variety Show - Arts & Culture Center
GC's Winter Carnival Variety Show
Copy of Central Pop Con 2017, Gander, NL, Canada. Includes Interview with Leah Cairns!
I attended the first annual Central Pop Con at the Arts & Culture Center and Gander Curling Club in Gander, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada. It was a great weekend and a fun convention, albiet smaller, but no less interesting! There was a free-play arcade, plenty of merch, cosplayers, familiar faces on the Con Circuit in this province, and i even had gotten to interview Leah Cairns (Racetrack from Battlestar Galactica, and currently Kat MacLaren in Travelers, wife of Grant, played by Eric McCormack of Will & Grace fame) and Terry Rielly, a renowned entertainer from this province (who popped in for a small chat while interviewing Leah!). This video is an hour long, and i tried not to spare any details, including the cosplay contest and opening/closing ceremonies! Enjoy!!

Atlantic Light Theatre
A CALL TO ARMS is an original NL musical written by Petrina Bromley. Atlantic Light theatre is proud to present this production September 29-30 at Holy Heart Theatre. Tickets can be purchased at the Box Office (709)579-4424 or online holyhearttheatre.com
Set in Newfoundland during WW1, this beautiful true story of love, family, friendship and sacrifice is based on the life of Stephen Norris born in Three Arms Island, Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland. Leaving behind a promising future, Norris was passionate about fighting ‘For King and Country’ and enlisted in the War. This decision changed everything. Norris - the unknown hero, worked his way up through the ranks to Lieutenant in the Newfoundland Regiment, before being killed in battle at Gueudecourt, France on October 11, 1916.
Since its premiere in 2004, this original NL musical has been rewritten by local Broadway celebrity and playwright, Petrina Bromley - currently acting in Come From Away, New York. Bromley’s gift for storytelling combined with music and lyrics by Ged Blackmore and orchestration by Bill Brennan, support this powerful story underscored by haunting melodies as well as toe-tapping tunes typical of a true Newfoundland party.
Under the direction of Jacinta Mackey-Graham and the musical direction of Douglas Vaughan, Atlantic Light Theatre is proud to present this story of bravery, love and sacrifice. Starring John Williams as Stephen Norris, and supported by a stellar cast in Michael Coady, Alexis Koetting, Sarah Loveys and Jeff Simms and a powerful ensemble of the St. John’s musical community, audiences will be reminded of the ultimate sacrifices Newfoundlanders made to WWI, both at home and overseas.
This is the fifth musical for Atlantic Light Theatre. Since 2014 the company has delighted audiences with sold out performances of Les Miserables, Spamalot, Sister Act, and Billy Elliot. You won’t want to miss the inspirational story of A Call To Arms. Guys and Dolls will be running February 1-3, 2018 at the Arts and Culture Centre.

The Velveteen Rabbit - Canada's Ballet Jörgen NL Tour
Dancers from Canada's Ballet Jörgen bring to life this renowned story of a young boy and his love for a stuffed rabbit that eventually comes to life. Written by Margery Williams, The Velveteen Rabbit was the most popular of her thirty children’s books and focuses on the importance of friendship, love and the discovery of what is real. As the wise character Skin Horse says, “Real isn’t how you are made. It’s the thing that happens to you. When a child really loves you for a long, long time... then you become real.”
The Velveteen Rabbit was a favorite children’s story for choreographer Kathleen Rea. She has created a fairy tale work that she hopes will teach children that it’s what’s on the inside of you that’s most important.”
Join us for this #ACCPresents show, as Canada's Ballet Jörgen brings the story of The Velveteen Rabbit to life.

Channel of Peace: Stranded in Gander on 9/11; © Kevin Tuerff video from Gander, 2001.
Kevin Tuerff's exclusive video from time being a Come From Away in Gander, Newfoundland on September 11th, 2001. His Transatlantic flight was the fourth of 38 wide-body jets to be diverted to the small airport when US air space was closed that tragic day. The town of 9,000 provided food, clothing, shelter and information to 6,579 stranded passengers and crew for five days, when they didn't have to. The compassionate action to strangers from 90 countries inspired Pay It Forward 9/11, an annual event encouraging good deeds and service to strangers. Part of Tuerff's story is included as the character Kevin T in the Broadway musical Come From Away and the award-winning documentary You Are Here: A Come From Away Story. Everybody Comes From Away: Art, Politics, And 9/11
On September 11, 2001, three dozen U.S. flights landed in Gander, Newfoundland, a small community that sprung to action, welcoming and providing refuge to some 6,500 Americans who needed a home away from home.
Fast forward to April 2017 when Tony-nominated writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein created “Come From Away,” which tells this story of cross-cultural tension and integration during an incredibly vulnerable time. Join CPD as we unpack this musical from the perspective of those on the ground and those in the arts community.
Mayor of Gander Percy Farwell, Center Theatre Group Producing Director Douglas C. Baker, Film Festival Director and Curator Jacqueline Lyanga, and Theatrical Producer Cynthia Stroum participated in a panel discussion moderated by Josh Kun, Director, USC Annenberg School for Communication. Panelists discussed themes of openness, tolerance and cultural generosity that were exemplified during the week of 9/11 on the ground in Gander and in the musical. Come From Away underscores the role of empathy in cultural encounters—an invaluable component for good public diplomacy anywhere.

David Blackwood
Pre-Order: 'West Wind: The Vision of Tom Thomson @
David Blackwood was born in Wesleyville, Bonavista Bay, November 7, 1941. His father was Captain Edward Blackwood, and his mother was Molly Blackwood. Blackwood grew up in an out port populated with schooner and sealing captains. He spent his summers aboard his father's schooner, the Flora S. Nickerson, fishing off the Labrador coast. He also spent sometime on Bragg's Island with his grandparents. When he was fifteen, he fished out of Wesleyville with his own boat and lobster traps.
Blackwood opened up his own art studio in 1956, where he painted during the winter months and then he sold his work to visitors during the summer. His artwork won several awards, which gained admission to Ontario College of Art in 1959. He sold one of his first etchings The Lost Party to the National Gallery of Canada for its permanent collection.
After he graduated, he remained in Ontario, teaching part time while working on his artwork. At this time he developed the very famous Lost Party series of etchings which focused on the S.S Newfoundland sealing disaster of 1914. It contains 50 etchings it is one of the largest series of prints in Canadian history. Since then , he remained one of the country's foremost artists winning numerous awards and receiving honorary doctorates from several universities, including Memorial University if Newfoundland. He also greatly involved with the creation of an art gallery at Erindale, a branch of the university of Toronto. As a sign of gratitude to Blackwood , it was eventually named the Blackwood gallery.
Then in 1974, the National film board produced a documentary about him merely titled: Blackwood. It won a world wide acknowledgment gaining 10 international awards, and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1975. In 1975 Blackwood was elected into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and to the Academia Italia in 1980. Also there are, wake of the Great Sealers a book written by Farley Mowat and The Art of David Blackwood.
His art continues to focus on Newfoundland, but he has not lived in the province on a regular basis since leaving art school in the early 1960's. He comes home to Wesleyville, once or twice a year. He now lives in Port Hope, Ontario. He says in interviews that if lived in the province it would hinder his ability to illustrate the stories of the Newfoundland out ports. Blackwood considered to be now one of Canada's best printmaker. He was retired from teaching, but continues to work on a full time basis as an artist.
