Overlooking the river Arun and town of Arundel in the English county of West Sussex is Arundel Castle. Home to the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for nearly 1,000 years it is one of the longest inhabited country houses in England.
If you intend visiting the castle plan to arrive by midday, the castle covers a lot of ground and it takes a long time to see everything. The castle closes about 4:30 pm.
There are four ticket prices which allow admission to various parts of the Castle. You can tour the Castle Grounds & Gardens & visit Fitzalan Chapel. Climb the steps to the Shell Keep and on up to the battlements. Explore the main rooms of the castle like the Library which has one of the finest Regency interiors, the Armoury with its collection of historic weaponry, the Drawing Room with its splendidly carved chimneypiece. See the stained glass windows, furniture, tapestries and rare collection of paintings by artists including Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Canaletto. Then finally climb the grand staircase to the Castle Bedrooms and Victorian bathrooms.

Arundel, a historic market town in West Sussex, England
A slideshow of my visit to the beautiful town of Arundel in West Sussex, England. This historic market town is situated on the River Arun and boasts some breathtaking views as you approach it from the surrounding countryside, taking in its famous castle, cathedral and parish church of St Nicholas. I visited the town with my grandad in June last year, (one of many visits I have made during my 36 years). We started by trekking up the very, very steep hill to St Nicholas' church, a favourite place of mine to always visit. It was built in 1380 and looks out over the town. The churchyard is much like any other English country churchyard, excepting the rather emotive sight of a statue of Christ on the cross with the dramatic backdrop of Arundel Castle in the background.
Then onto Arundel Castle, where we lunched in the grounds before entering the Fitzalan Chapel, which can be seen from the interior of St Nicholas' church, but accessed from the castle grounds (hence a long walk!). The chapel is very fine with exquisite carvings, engravings and brasses. It has a quiet and eerie atmosphere, as befitting its age and function. Oliver Cromwell is said to have stabled his horses in the chapel during the English Civil War, when the Arundel Castle changed hands 3 times. Then we looked around the newly opened Earl's gardens, which were full of delights for keen gardeners like myself and my grandad (that's where I get it from.) There were some lovely views looking towards the Cathdral (built 1873) and the aforementioned church. The castle itself was our last port of call, sadly no cameras were permitted inside. I find it hard to get excited about portraits and silver spoons in glass cabinets, so this was the dullest part of the visit for me, excepting the reputed bedroom of Queen Matilda, a great but tragic figure of English history. Best thing of all was time spent with my grandad :-)
Arundel's other great attraction is of course the Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre, a place I visit often, but not on this day (not enough time).

Historic England: Day Trip to Arundel Castle
Arundel Castle is one of the oldest and grandest castles in the United Kingdom. A year after William the Conqueror invaded England at Hastings he visited Arundel where he gave a huge amount of land to his best pal Roger de Montgomery. In return he asked him to build a stone fortification to defend the English coast from other invaders. So, Roger built Arundel Castle, this historic place still intact and owned by one of his descendants!

Visit Arundel - Tourism Video
Arundel, a Cathedral City on the south coast of England, is an ideal visitor destination featuring the gothic cathedral, ancient castle, wetlands centre and much more.
Why Was Arundel Castle so Formidable?
Right at the nucleus of Arundel Castle is its stone keep, situated at the fortification's highest point. This was where the defenders would come and make their final stand if the castle was ever besieged.
It was built on top of the Norman motte following William the Conqueror's conquest of southern England in 1066 and was originally constructed of timber. Yet in c.1140 the wooden keep was demolished and replaced with a stronger, stone one.
Recently Dan visited the formidable bastion to understand why this fortress was considered almost-impregnable.

Arundel is a market town and civil parish in a steep vale of the South Downs, West Sussex, England. Arundel lies 49 miles SSW of London, 18 miles WNW of the English Channel city of Brighton, and 10 miles east of the county city of Chichester. Larger nearby towns include Worthing, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis.
The much-conserved town with large green buffers has a medieval castle and Roman Catholic cathedral. Although smaller in population than most other parishes, Arundel has a museum and comes second behind much larger Chichester in its number of listed buildings in West Sussex. The River Arun runs through the eastern side of the town of Arundel .
Arundel was one of the boroughs reformed by the Municipal Reform Act 1835. From 1836-1889 the town had its own Borough police force with a strength of three. In 1974 Arundel became part of the Arun district, and now is a civil parish with a town council.
Arundel civil parish occupies an area somewhat larger than its built-up clusters, with the old town towards the north and the new to the south, separated by a main road. Arundel town is a major bridging point over the River Arun as it was the lowest road bridge until the opening of the Littlehampton swing bridge in 1908. Arundel Castle was built by the Normans to protect that vulnerable fairly wooded plain to the north of the valley through the South Downs. The town later grew up on the slope below the castle to the south.
Arundel includes meadows to the south but is clustered north of the A27 road, which narrowly avoids the town centre by a short and congested single carriageway bypass. Plans for a more extensive, HQDC bypass were debated intensely between 1980 and 2010 and built a junction for it at Crossbush. Arundel railway station is on the Arun Valley Line. The Monarch's Way long-distance footpath passes through the town and crosses the river here, while just under five miles north and north-west of the town the route of the South Downs Way runs. The town itself lies outside the boundaries of the South Downs National Park.
Arundel is home to Arundel Castle, seat of the Duke of Norfolk; and to Arundel Cathedral, seat of the (Catholic) Bishop of Arundel and Brighton. On 6 July 2004, Arundel was granted Fairtrade Town status. People born in Arundel are known locally as Mullets, due to the presence of mullet in the River Arun. Arundel is home to one of the oldest Scout Groups in the world. 1st Arundel (Earl of Arundel's Own) Scout Group was formed in 1908 only a few weeks after Scouting began.

Secrets of Arundel Castle Documentary
Dan Jones is in the heart of the English countryside at Arundel Castle. Though it may appear tranquil today, for centuries this picture perfect castle had its share of turbulent times.
Apart from the occasional reversion to the Crown, from 1138 to the present day Arundel Castle has been carried by female heiresses from the d'Albinis to the FitzAlans in the 13th century and then from the FitzAlans to the Howards in the 16th century. But the fate of the Earls of Arundel has been tumultuous to say the least.
Jones meets a weapons expert who shows him how knights like Richard FitzAlan, third Earl of Arundel, would have fought in the 100 Year War with France and debunks the myth that swords were heavy and cumbersome to use.
Arundel has been the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for over 850 years. The Duke of Norfolk is the Premier Duke and Arundel's fortunes rose and fell along with those of the Howard family. Arguably, no other English family has had such a dramatic history as the Howard's — and Jones tells that story.
Finally, Jones meets a Social Historian who gives him a better insight into the realities of living in a castle and how Arundel Castle would have prepared for Queen Victoria's visit in 1846.
