Matam during Muharram
Many Shia also tend to embark on a pilgrimage to the Imam Husayn Shrine in Karbala itself, as it is one of the holiest places for Shias outside of Mecca and Medina. Up to one million pilgrims a year visit the city to observe the anniversary of Husayn ibn Ali's death. The shrine is located opposite that of Abbas ibn Ali.
Matam
The Arabic term matam refers in general to any act or gesture of mourning; in Shia Islam the term designates acts of lamentation for the martyrs of Karbala. Many of the male and female participants congregate in public for ceremonial chest beating (matam) as a display of their devotion to Imam Husayn and in remembrance of his suffering. In some Shi'a societies, such as those in Bahrain, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Iraq, some male participants incorporate knives or razors swung upon chains into their matam. There are two basic forms of matam:
matam using one's hands only, that is, sineh-zani or breast-beating
matam with implements like chains, knives, swords and blades, that is, zanjeer-zani, qama-zani, etc.
Matam in South Asia is the most significant and sensitive Shia identity marker.

Beach Therapy
The sun, sand and sea is all that is on my mind since I got from my short but memorable vacation in Mangalore. My cousin sister, her friend and I spent the majority of our time on the beaches around Mangalore and Udupi and these are of few photos from our trip.
It was while I was standing on Kapu beach around sunset that it suddenly struck me how the beach is where the four elements- Earth, Water, Air and Fire, meet and align together in perfect, harmonious but distinctive glory. This thought stayed with me while climbing the steep steps of the lighthouse on the beach, and once we reached the top I saw how the water rushing back and forth as if in animated conversation with the land and the felt the air that imbibed the characters of its companions but still remained distinct while the sun shone down, glistening on the water like gold. The view from the top is something I will cherish for a lifetime.
While we were about to leave the light house, another thought crossed my mind which made my heart ache. The light house keeper readying the equipment, gearing for sunset, did not share the same excitement as us for the beauty and charm of the beach was lost to him who saw it every day as an ordinary routine.
