Ariyabal Meditation Temple in Mongolia
Aryabal Buddhist Meditation Center, Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, Tov, Mongolia, Asia
Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is one of the national parks of Mongolia. The Terelj tourist zone has a number of tourist camps. It is connected with Ulan Bator by a paved road. The road comes to the Gorkhiin Davaa pass. Most of the tourist camps and tourist attractions are before this pass. The road then ends in Terelj settlement, which features small shops and restaurants. Terelj settlement is located in the Terelj gol river dale, approximately 66 km from Ulaanbaatar city center. The national park tourist zone is formally Nalaikh düüreg (district) part of Ulaanbaatar, the rest (protected) zone begins to the North from Terelj Gol river and is located in Mongolia's Töv aimag. A small southern portion of the park is developed for tourists, with restaurants, souvenir shops, horses and camels for rent, and tourist ger camps, many of them run by Juulchin, the former state tourism company. However, most of the park is undeveloped and difficult to access. Attractions include Khagiin Khar Lake, a 20m deep glacial lake 80 km upstream from the tourist camps, and Yestii Hot Water Springs, natural hot springs 18 km further upstream. The park also has a Buddhist monastery that is open to visitors. Park wildlife includes brown bears and over 250 species of birds. The Tuul River flows through the park. The park has many rock formations for rock climbers, and includes two famous formations named for things they resemble: Turtle Rock and the Old Man Reading a Book (Praying Lama Rock). Many Westerners were introduced to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park when the CBS reality television program The Amazing Race visited the park in the second episode of its tenth season.

Well known as sightseeing destination, gigantesque rock made and carved into a turtle by only wind and rain water, which is just off the main road into the park. Many people have called it «the Switzerland of Mongolia»; it is and excellent place for horse or camel riding, hiking inside the rock and nearby.
The legend states that the King Galdanboshigt hid all his treasures during the war with Manchu Troops in 1600. Since then it’s worshiped by the locals as the treasure rock bringing wealth to those who visit.

Mongolia, Tuv Aimag Countryside (2000/08/18)
In the summer of 2000 Dr. Paula L.W. Sabloff traveled to Mongolia to film nomadic people today in conjunction with an exhibit that was to be put on at Penn Museum the following year, entitled Modern Mongolia, Reclaiming Genghis Khan. Dr. Sabloff was joined by cameraman Tom Gillern, and crew member Heather Marshall, who used a mini dv camera to videotape extensive interviews with Mongolian people from various backgrounds to give an overview of lifestyles today, as well as scenes of life on the Mongolian steppes. This collection contains the unedited tapes from the sessions, together with metadata gathered onsite.

OVERLANDING MONGOLIA WINTER 2018 TRAVELLER'S NEST NZ #4X4 #TRAVEL SERIES MONGOLIA #ROADTRIP MONGOLIA
The highlights of our Overlanding 4x4 Adventures in Mongolia
It was the beginning of winter..such a great time to go. It is still my number one travel destination of this year.. after 30 countries
We were on tour with SUNPATH MONGOLIA TOURS of Central Mongolia from 02.11.2018 to 07.11.2018.
We were picked up promptly on time at Ulaanbaatar train station from our 24 hour from Beijing.
The following morning we set off with our tour guide and translator plus driver in a Landcruiser 80 series for a fantastic tour of Central Mongolia.
Each tour from Sun Path is unique and differently, done in according to clients wishes. We could not have asked for a better service.
I had been communicating with the owner of Sunpath Tours since June 2018 as I had a lots of questions around the winter in Mongolia and we wanted 4WD driving to be included, as we love nothing more than going off road..well, be reassured from someone, who has been overlanding around Australia for 18 months and who has only been walking around in shorts and t-shirts. It is actually not that cold in Mongolia in November as it is a very dry climate. Plus we got lots of offroading included. We like remote places and nature
As we were driving out of Ulaanbaatar, it started to snow, magical. Kharakhorum is the ancient capital of Great Mongol Empire. It is situated in a beautiful valley to protect it from the winds from Siberia.
From the moment we got out of the car, and the Monastery was opened for us, I knew the Erdene Zuu Monastery was going to be special.
It was once, one of the most important cities of the Silk Road. It was founded in 1220 by Genghis Khan, although it really developed as a capital by his son, Ugudei, in the 1230s.
The Erdene Zuu Monastery was founded in 1585. It is considered one of the most important Buddhist temples and Monasteries in Mongolia.
Under Soviet rule, at Stalin directions all monasteries and church were to be destroyed. All but three temples in the monastery were destroyed. A number of unknown monks were either killed or sent to Siberian gulags. The monastery was shut down in 1937, and reopened in 1965 as a museum, but not as a place of worship. Only after the fall of communism in 1990 did the Monastery become active again.
DAY 2
After spending the night at a local guesthouse, we were up early to see if it had snowed overnight. Unfortunately it had not.
After a visit to the local markets, we set off for a day of 4wd driving thru the Orkhon valley.
As we drove along a local bridge has just collapsed, 2 weeks prior. Infrastructure does not get repaired in Mongolia over winter from October to April. It is just simply too cold outside, and Mongolia only has 4,800 km of paved roads.
We thought the local roads were not worse, than the remote 4wd tracks in Australia, however no grader come thru every six months to fix the road..it is as you find it. True wilderness
Orkhon valley is unique due to its volcanic rocks and is UNESCO world heritage listed.
We spent two days here with another nomadic family. The family structure is very alive in Mongolia. The grandparents will look after the grandkids until they are 6 years old. We shared meals with the family, watched TV, went horse riding with them and even watched the stars in minus 16 with them. A truly amazing experience.
DAY 3
The next day as Mark went horse riding, I followed them by foot. I had the neighbors dogs follow me, wherever I went..you are totally alone in this valley, then a local man comes past with his herd of Yaks. Wonderful to watch.
We walked to the Ulaan Tsutgalan waterfall, almost totally frozen. It is the water source for the local Nomadic families. At the beginning of December it will be totally frozen, we could hear the ice breaking off the waterfall.
DAY 4
We drove past the Deer stones, another UNESCO world heritage listed site.
The Deer stones are Ancient megaliths carved with symbols. It is suggested, that they are Ancient graves dated back to the Middle Ages.
A very unique and interesting site
Then all of a sudden dunes will appear along the main road, we were back in the Semi Gobi desert..after camel riding for 40 mins in minus 6 we were frozen.
DAY 5
After watching the sun come up around 9am, we drove off towards Hustai National park to view the wild Mongolian Takhi horses. There are only 300 of them left in the wild, as a result the government set up this park to protect and preserve them.
Once we entered the NP, we did not need to go far to see them, plus herd of deer.
In the afternoon, we hiked up to the Aryabal Meditation Temple in the Gorkhi Terelj National park.
The temple is shaped like an elephant head.
DAY 6
We visited the Genghis Khan monument and statue.
It was designed by a local engineer and is pointed in the direction of Genghis Khan birthplace. It was built for the 800th celebration of the Great Mongolian Empire in 2008.
Aryapala Temple, Terelj Park, Mongolia
Video recorded inside the temple. I was the only foreigner inside, and there were people praying, so I made the recording quietly from a corner.
Some pictures (not mine) of the breathtaking surroundings of the temple can be found here:
