Demre Myra (General Information)
Kale (Demre, Myra)
Well known for being the hometown of Santa Claus, Kale is an important faith tourism spot in Antalya.
History
The foundation date of Myra is not known exactly. However, the archaeological data, obtained from the researches in the grave reliefs with regard to style, indicates that the city has existed in the 5th century before Hellenistic Period. The city experienced its golden period during the 2nd century AD. Myra, completely destroyed by the earthquake in 141 AD., was rebuilt by the charities of the rich Opromaos from Radiopolis and Lucius Magnun, Roman Proconsul. Artemis Eleutera Sacred Place in the city was also rebuilt. Having been renovated in this period, the theatre with its ornaments was characterised as a wonder of the world in the Late Antique Period. Some of the numerous masks ornamenting this stage building are exhibited in the Demre Museum and some in the Antalya Museum.
During the reign of Theodosius II (408-450 AD.), the city became the Metropolitan of the Lycians. In this period, the reputation of the city as the centre of pilgrimage where diseases having been cured spread not only in Lycia but also throughout the Christian World. The reason for this is that Santa Claus (St. Nicholas) has lived here in Myra in this period.
Climate
Summers are hot and dry, winters mild and rainy.

Demre is a town and its surrounding district in the #Antalya Province on the Mediterranean coast of #Turkey, named after the river Demre.
Demre is the Lycian town of #Myra, the home of Saint Nicholas of Myra, the historical man later developed into the figure of Santa Claus. The district was known as Kale until it was renamed in 2005. A substantial Christian community of Greeks lived in Demre (Myra) until the 1920s when they were forced to migrate to Greece after the Population exchange between Greece and Turkey.[4] The abandoned Greek villages in the region are a striking reminder of this exodus. Abandoned Greek houses can still be seen at Demre and the regions of Kalkan, Kaş and Kaya which is a Greek ghost town.[4] A small population of Turkish farmers moved into the region when the Greek Christians were forced to migrate to Greece.[4] The region is popular with tourists today particularly Christian pilgrims who visit the tomb of Saint Nicholas.

Greco-Roman Amphitheatre, Myra, Turkey Review 2018. Demre, Turkey-Ancient Myra
Myra - Turkish Culture Portal. Greco-Roman Amphitheatre, Myra, Turkey 2018. In this video we will show you the Greco-Roman amphitheater that was built in the 4th century AD in the ancient Lycian city of Myra.
Near the Greco-Roman amphitheater are tombs and sarcophagi that are dated back to the 4th century BC.
This huge amphitheater, which can accommodate up to 10 thousand people, has been destroyed many times by earthquakes and restored again. Different performances, gladiatorial fights, entertainment events took place here
It is called Greco-Roman, although it is rather Greek - judging by the semicircular form. Yes, and there is no division in it of spectator places by class affiliation, which is typical of the Greek style.
The diameter of the amphitheater is about 110 meters. There are 35 rows of stone seats. The top 6 rows are separated from the 29 lower semicircular aisles. The stage and the stairs of the theater are carved from a shiny rock. The acoustics here is amazing.
It functioned for a long time, until the mud flows of the river finally flooded it. Not so long ago the amphitheater was unearthed. Restoration work is being carried out here.
Now the amphitheater in Myra could be climbed all over, walked, and just sitted – under the warm sun. By the way, in the Myra it's very hot even in May. They say that in summer the temperature here can reach +45 degrees Celsius!
In the following issues we will show you other sights of the Lycian city of Myra.

ABANDONED - Sunken City Kekova Turkey (Atlantis ?) Glass Bottom Boat Trip
#ABANDONED - Sunken City Kekova Turkey (Alantis ?) Glass Bottom Boat Trip, #urbex #atlantis. Kekova, also named Caravola (Lycian: Dolichiste), is a small Turkish island near Demre (Demre is the Lycian town of Myra) district of Antalya province which faces the villages of Kaleköy (ancient Simena) and Üçağız (ancient Teimioussa). Kekova has an area of 4.5 km2 (2 sq mi) and is uninhabited.
After the Italian occupation of Kastelorizo, Kekova — which at that time was temporarily inhabited during summer because of wood harvest — was disputed between Italy and Turkey. The 1932 Convention between Italy and Turkey assigned it to Turkey.
On its northern side there are the partly sunken ruins of Dolchiste/Dolikisthe, an ancient town which was destroyed by an earthquake during the 2nd century. Rebuilt and still flourishing during the Byzantine Empire period, it was finally abandoned because of Arab incursions. Tersane (meaning dockyard, as its bay was the site of an ancient city Xera and dockyard, with the ruins of a Byzantine church) is at the northwest of the island.
The Kekova region was declared a specially protected area on 18 January 1990 by Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forest. All kinds of diving and swimming were prohibited and subject to special permits from governmental offices. In later years the prohibition has been lifted except for the part where the sunken city is.
The Kekova region is 260 km2 (100 sq mi) and encompasses the island of Kekova, the villages of Kaleköy and Üçağız and the four ancient towns of Simena, Aperlae, Dolchiste and Teimioussa.
Kaleköy (locally just Kale) (ancient Simena) is a Lycian site on the Turkish coast. It is a small village with the partly sunken ruins of Aperlae[1] and a castle. Access to the village is possible only by sea.
Üçağız (ancient name, Teimioussa) is a village one km from Kaleköy, north of a small bay by the same name, with the ruins of Teimioussa to the east. The name Üçağız means three mouths, referring to the three exits to open sea.

Turkey. Demre. Lycian tombs.(Турция.
#Turkey #Demre #Myra #гробницы #DJONDO
Myra (Ancient Greek: τα Μύρα [plural]) is an ancient Greek town in Lycia where the small town of Kale (Demre) is situated today in present day Antalya Province of Turkey. It was located on the river Myros (Demre Çay), in the fertile alluvial plain between Alaca Dağ, the Massikytos range and the Aegean Sea.
Although some scholars equate Myra with the town Mira in Arzawa, there is no proof for the connection. There is no substantiated written reference for Myra before it was listed as a member of the Lycian alliance (168 BC – AD 43); according to Strabo (14:665) it was one of the largest towns of the alliance.
The Greek citizens worshipped Artemis Eleutheria, who was the protective goddess of the town. Zeus, Athena and Tyche were venerated as well.
The ruins of the Lycian and Roman town are mostly covered by alluvial silts. The Acropolis on the Demre-plateau, the Roman theatre and the Roman baths (eski hamam) have been partly excavated. The semi-circular theater was destroyed in an earthquake in 141, but rebuilt afterwards.
Rock-cut tombs in Myra.
There are two necropoleis of Lycian rock-cut tombs in the form of temple fronts carved into the vertical faces of cliffs at Myra: the river necropolis and the ocean necropolis. The ocean necropolis is just northwest of the theater. The best known tomb in the river necropolis (located 1.5 km up the Demre Cayi from the theater) is the Lion's tomb, also called the Painted Tomb. When the traveller Charles Fellows saw the tombs in 1840 he found them still colorfully painted red, yellow and blue.
Andriake was the harbour of Myra in classical times, but silted up later on. The main structure there surviving to the present day is a granary built during the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian (117–138 CE). Beside this granary is a large heap of Murex shells, evidence that Andriake had an ongoing operation for the production of purple dye.

Myra Antik Kenti Tiyatro Ve Kaya Mezarları Demre Antalya 4K UHD
809 yılındaki kuşatmanın ardından Myra Abbasi halifesi Harun Reşid'in emri altındaki birlikler tarafından ele geçirildi.
