CATHEDRAL BEACH / Spain
It was a rainy day when we arrived at Chapel of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. The weather made sure we see dramatic side of the north shores of Spain. There are 241 carved steps to reach the chapel and the bridge connecting it to the mainland looks like a thin string barely holding island so it won't float away.
But main goal of our trip to Spain was to see Cathedral Beach. It is truly a magnificent example of nature's raw power in action. There was a narrow time gap just before sunset to reach the spot where you can see all cathedral walls lining up. And we were lucky to have this view all to ourselves. It was humbling to see ocean waves slowly but surely covering our only exit. One of the true must-see places of Spain!

Playa de las Catedrales Spain Galicia/Praia das Catedrais Galicien/Strand der Kathedralen Ribadeo
#primitivodraussen #Asturiastopfavourites #2snMWu8bOLhou79zBVfYMzrhi
This wonderful piece of coastline in Galicia is called La Playa de las Catedrales. Like a sacral work of a church builder, the cliffs protrude from the sandy beach. In Galician, the beach is called Praia As Catedrais or Playa de Aguas Santas.
The Playa de las Catedrales is one of the most beautiful beaches in Spain and is not without reason one of the seven natural wonders of this popular holiday destination. The beach is located in the province of Lugo in the northern Spanish region of Galicia, not far from the border with Asturias.
The rock formations, which gave the beach its name, rise up to 32 meters high and consist of many layers of slate rock. Sea salt, wind and weather have formed caves, arches and vaults in the rock.
The Playa de las Catedrales is about 1300 metres long and is flanked by a long stretch of green rocky coastline. The beach can only be visited at low tide, as the entire beach is flooded and inaccessible at high tide. At high tide, one can be caught quickly in the sea and should hurry to reach the mainland before the tides change.
The high ceilings in the caves and the mighty stone columns resemble pillars of a Gothic cathedral. As the water level rises, you have to jump over ever larger puddles. Often you can't make it back to land with dry feet.
But too many people have visited the beach at Ribadeo. Environmentalists have been warning for years about the consequences of the many footsteps for flora and fauna that all life in the sand will literally be trampled underfoot. Galicia's regional government has now taken action. It wants to protect the biosphere reserve and steer the growing stream of visitors into reasonable courses, therefore one may in the time between July and September only then to the beach, if one reserved oneself on-line an entrance authorization under ascatedrais. com. In this summertime only 4812 people are allowed per day. This figure was calculated on the basis of the number of visitors in recent years and is now considered to be sustainable in order to protect the beach, flora and fauna. I visited the beach in June and didn't need a ticket.

Discover the Underwater world - Incredible As Catedrais Beach in Ribadeo, Galicia | Camino del Norte
On the Day 29 of our Camino de Santiago del Norte we passed through Ribadeo and Las Catedrales Beach in Galicia.
We packed everything up and were on the trail only at 12.00 a.m. So we hiked several kms along the coast, explored several amazing beaches with white sand and finally got to Ribadeo. We continued to hear the unusual Galician language around and were wandering the last days about how it formed and what is it similar to. And it stroke us that we're close to Portugal and it sounds much like Portuguese language. So we had a small walk in Ribadeo and then hoped on the train to move 3 stops further to get to the Praia As Catedrais which was known as a popular tourist attraction. The train stop was very close to it so after walking 2 kms along the coastal path we were at the place...

Places to see in ( Galicia - Spain ) As Catedrais Beach
As Catedrais beach translates as 'Beach of the Cathedrals'. It is the turistic name of Praia de Augas Santas. The Spanish beach is located in the Ribadeo municipality, in the province of Lugo (Galicia), on the Cantabric coast, and it lies about ten kilometres to the west from the town of Ribadeo. Its name is derived from the formations of its cliffs.
As Catedrais Beach has been declared a Natural Monument by the regional Ministry for the Environment of the Xunta de Galicia. The place's more characteristic features are its natural arches and caves, which can be seen only in low tide. During high tide, the beach appears quite small, but is still suitable to go for a swim.
High tide is an interesting time to visit the place and wander over the top of the cliffs, from West to East, heading to the Esteiro Beach. During low tide you can appreciate the size of its magnificent cliffs and the picturesque sea caves, which go from small cracks on the rock to big caves whose roofs collapse due to the erosion of the waves.
Also during low tide you can gain access to a sand deposit delimited by a rocky wall made from slate and schist of strange and complex forms: more than 30-meters-tall arches which remind to cathedral flying buttresses, dozen-meters-long caves, sand corridors between rocky blocks and many other curiosities. When low tide is lower than usual, you can access the nearby beaches through the sand extension. However, it is advisable to be back before the water starts to cover the As Catedrais beach again, which happens very quickly, since the coast stretch is almost horizontal.

Places to see in ( Ribadeo - Spain )
Ribadeo is a municipality in the Spanish province of Lugo in Galicia. Ribadeo is the capital of the A Mariña Oriental comarca. The municipality of Ribadeo has approximately the shape of a 10x10 kilometer square. It is bordered to the north by the Cantabrian Sea, to the east by the Ribadeo estuary (on the other side of which is Castropol in Asturias), to the west by the municipality of Barreiros and to the south by that of Trabada. The capital of the municipality is the town of Ribadeo. There is one other town - Rinlo - and many small villages and hamlets. The highest point of the municipality is the mountain of Mondigo (571m), in the parish of Cubelas.
The coat of arms of Ribadeo is of medieval origin. It depicts waves of the sea on which are superimposed a golden key at an oblique angle and a silver star. The key symbolizes the Ribadeo incorporation into Galicia, and the star its northern location. Until the late seventeenth century the coat of arms lacked the star and the key was in the upright position. This older version can be seen carved in stone in 1699, in the chapel of the Virxe do Camiño, at which time it was already ancient. The local economy of Ribadeo is dominated by the service sector, in particular the retail and hotel trades. There is a fishing and commercial port in Ribadeo , the only major port between Ferrol and Avilés.

The ruins of an ancient Franciscan convent.
A number of emblazoned houses in the old quarter.
