Animal at Asa Zoo (Hiroshima)
Within the spacious, verdant grounds of the Hiroshima City Asa Zoological Park, you'll find giraffes, African elephants, lesser panders, tigers and many other popular animals!
The park is currently working to increase its facilities where visitors can observe animals up close, such as the opening, in 2010, of the Leo Glass installation, which allows visitors to view lions through glass. At Pichiku Park, a petting zoo and popular spot within the park, visitors can interact directly with goats, sheep, guinea pigs and more; plus, pony rides are available on weekends and holidays. There are also many events to enjoy, such as the Cool Night's Safari held in summer and the Backyard Guide, which is held every Saturday.
In addition, the park also engages in breeding activities in cooperation with other zoos in an effort to protect and preserve endangered species. The Hiroshima City Asa Zoological Park is proud to be one of the few zoos in Japan to succeed in breeding Japanese giant salamanders, black rhinoceros and zebras.

Three Tragic Elephants in Asa Zoo, Hiroshima, Japan
Japanese zoos, aquaria and bear parks are nasty, gloomy enclaves of cruelty. These three elephants, after years of boredom and lack of stimulation at Asa Zoo, Hiroshima are lost in their own little worlds, no longer relating to each other.
The middle elephant is at least getting bits of wood out of the log which is chained down, and eating them to try to entertain itself.
This is a typical sight in Japanese zoos where the animals' lives are not enriched in any way which is now modern zoo practice.
For instance elephants like digging in soil, but instead these are housed in a concrete enclosure with nothing to do.year after year end up in this state.

A temple that has been greatly worshipped by the Imperial family and successive leaders of the nation. There has also been a Buddhist memorial service with the Dalai Lama in attendance. The view from inside the temple grounds is also wonderful and you will want to visit Daisho-in along with Itsukishima Shrine.
