To the north-east of Kumasi, these are the last material remains of the great Asante civilization, which reached its high point in the 18th century. Since the dwellings are made of earth, wood and straw, they are vulnerable to the onslaught of time and weather.

Asante Chief Year Of Return #DiasporaDance (Kumasi, Ghana | Ashanti Region)
Asante, also spelled Ashanti, people of south-central Ghana and adjacent areas of Togo and Côte d’Ivoire. Most of the Asante live in a region centred on the city of Kumasi, which was the capital of the former independent Asante state. They speak a Twi language of the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo language family and are a subgroup of the Akan peoples.
Although some Asante now live and work in urban centres, they remain primarily associated with village life. They are mainly farmers who produce plantain, bananas, cassava, yams, and cocoyams for local markets and cacao for export.
The basis of Asante social organization is the matrilineage, a localized segment of a clan whose members claim descent from a common female ancestor. Members of the lineage assist one another in activities such as building houses, farming, and clearing paths and in funeral rites. Since the Asante believe that every individual is made up of two elements—blood from the mother and spirit from the father—paternal descent is also recognized and governs membership in exogamous ntoro divisions that are associated with certain religious and moral obligations.

Kumasi Kidjitia. Very big and diverse market, dont misse the foose line area where second hands clothes are being sold on both side of an old train track. edit
Manhyia Palace Museum, [1]. 9 AM to 5 PM. Built in 1925 by the British as the residence of King Asantehene Prempeh I, this museum is also a palace. Walking through the museum, you will learn about the function of each room when it was used by the kings, as well as seeing artwork and artifacts from the Asante kings. edit
Ghana Armed Forces Museum, 22 Steward Ave, ☎ +2335123103. 9 AM to 5 PM Tues. through Sat. The museum buildings once served as Kumasi Fort, built by the British in 1896 after they destroyed the Asante Fort that originally stood here. The museum predominantly features information and artifacts related to the British-Asante War, but also includes many artifacts from World War I, World War II, and information about modern Ghanaian military history. Tour guides are friendly and very knowledgeable. Highly recommended. edit
Kumasi Zoo. All of the animals from the former Accra Zoo were transferred here a couple years ago, so there is now more to see. However, the conditions are not good for the animals, so visiting is not encouraged. edit

Otumfuor Osei Tutu II celebrates his 20th anniversary as the king of the Ashanti kingdom. The Adae Kese festival (Akwasidae Kese) was also marked. There was a great display of the Asante culture as well as that of the other tribes who graced the occasion. Please enjoy as you watch.

From Cape Coast, Ghana, we drove inland to Kumasi, a major city in the central Ashanti Region of Ghana. I was excited to sample authentic Ashanti food, and to spend just a short time exploring Kumasi. The drive from Cape Coast took about 4 hours.
Fufu for Lunch - When we arrived, we were all quite hungry and so we stopped at a local chop bar (Ghanaian local food restaurant) for lunch. I’m not really sure of the name of this spot, or I don’t even think it really had a name written on it. But it was a popular neighborhood spot, especially known for their fufu - a West African staple food of pounded plantain and cassava. I had it along with a mix of palm nut soup and a variety of meats.

Ashanti Food Cooking in Kumasi, Ghana -
The main activity food activity of the day was meeting a host family and going to their home to cook and experience authentic Ashanti Ghanaian food. Before going home, we stopped at a local market in Kumasi to buy some vegetables, and some essentials for the cooking, especially taro leaves.
Kontomire stew - I didn’t really know what we’d be cooking, but learned it was a dish called kontomire stew, a stew made from fermented fish for flavor and mostly taro leaves (also called cocoyam in Ghana). The leaves were boiled and ground with garlic and spices, then doused in boiling palm nut oil to finish it. The dish was served with boiled green plantains and cocoyams that you could dip into the kontomire stew. It was also amazing to eat with avocado, and the highlight of my day was eating with the entire family.
