Asante Traditional Buildings is a World Heritage Site in Ghana, which is a collection of 13 traditionally built buildings from the time of the Ashanti Empire in the area. The Asante Kingdom had its golden age in the 18th century, fell during the British occupation of the area from 1806 to 1901, and most Asante buildings of the period were destroyed during the area. Among other buildings, the royal mausoleum was destroyed by Baden-Powell in 1895. The buildings were described as home of men and gods, and are the last remains of the history and culture of the Asante people. The houses are built of clay, straw and wood, and are vulnerable to natural fluctuations. There is therefore a need for the preservation of the buildings.

This house in Ghana is a original of a traditional Ashanti house. It is very sad to see around the entire country the traditional and way of life is been cleaned out and left with marks of colonial influence.

Less and less of the traditional life and individual cultures are going to be left in the world anymore.

As an anthropological landmark of its time, the series tells the story of traditional communities endangered by the modern world’s progressions.
The series stands as a historical document of daily life in remote and threatened societies, such as the Cuiva, Embera and Panare Indians of Colombia, the nomadic Tuareg of the Sahara, the Kurdish Dervishes and the Meo of China.

From Cape Coast, Ghana, we drove inland to Kumasi, a major city in the central Ashanti Region of Ghana. I was excited to sample authentic Ashanti food, and to spend just a short time exploring Kumasi. The drive from Cape Coast took about 4 hours.

Fufu for Lunch - When we arrived, we were all quite hungry and so we stopped at a local chop bar (Ghanaian local food restaurant) for lunch. I’m not really sure of the name of this spot, or I don’t even think it really had a name written on it. But it was a popular neighborhood spot, especially known for their fufu - a West African staple food of pounded plantain and cassava. I had it along with a mix of palm nut soup and a variety of meats.

Ashanti Food Cooking in Kumasi, Ghana -
The main activity food activity of the day was meeting a host family and going to their home to cook and experience authentic Ashanti Ghanaian food. Before going home, we stopped at a local market in Kumasi to buy some vegetables, and some essentials for the cooking, especially taro leaves.

Kontomire stew - I didn’t really know what we’d be cooking, but learned it was a dish called kontomire stew, a stew made from fermented fish for flavor and mostly taro leaves (also called cocoyam in Ghana). The leaves were boiled and ground with garlic and spices, then doused in boiling palm nut oil to finish it. The dish was served with boiled green plantains and cocoyams that you could dip into the kontomire stew. It was also amazing to eat with avocado, and the highlight of my day was eating with the entire family.

The Asante Empire (Twi: Asanteman) was an Akan empire and kingdom from 1670 to 1957 in what is now modern-day Ghana. It expanded from Asante to include the Brong-Ahafo Region, Central Region, Eastern Region, Greater Accra Region and Western Region of present-day Ghana. Due to the empire's military prowess, wealth, architecture, sophisticated hierarchy and culture, the Asante Kingdom has been extensively studied and has more historiographies by European, primarily British authors than any other indigenous culture of Sub-Saharan Africa.
