Tanzania 2010, Moshi Town & Market
Follow our great 2010 expedition to Tanzania.
Including:
- Moshi-Town
Today we had a free day before starting the Kilimanjaro trek, so we decided to take the Hotel Dala Dala(Minibus) Shuttle into Moshi Town and do some exploration.
We were adviced by the Hotel to take a Hotel guide , which could with stand all the Fly catchers, however we decided to go on our own, a decision we did not regret although we followed by a comapny of 10 people at the end :-)
We hired one of the sales guys reagan to talk us through the market and show us the Moshi City Town, It was an very nice experience but not maybe for people with weak nerves. Hakuna matata is the way to go :-)

Taking the bus through Moshi Tanzania. The video gives a general feel of the city of Moshi. It is pretty layed back in general. It also has couple of shots with some local long distance buses like Dar Express. The town is situated on the lower slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro, a volcanic mountain that is the highest mountain in Africa. Moshi is often overlooked as a tourist destination, with many visitors to Northern Tanzania instead choosing to stay in nearby Arusha. However the town is now host to the Kilimanjaro Marathon which is rapidly growing in popularity and there are several cultural tourism programs operating on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Ever since traveling for me meant to be active. I was taking on new outdoor challenges every year from skiing in the Alps to rafting in South America, Biking trips in North America and several multi-day trekking adventures in places like Patagonia, Peru or Kyrgyzstan. This year I was ready for the next step: climbing one of the seven summits. When G Adventures asked me to become part of their Wanderers program I saw my chance to take on the highest mountain in Africa as one of their brand ambassadors….but little did I know how hard this endeavour would be….
Unlike other trips this one started actually 5 months before the first day of trekking…I worked on my fitness, changed my diet and did a lot of research on Mt. Kilimanjaro. I decided to take on the Lemosho route which is 56 kilometers long and takes altogether 8 days - my decision was based on 2 reasons: one was the fact that the itinerary of this route is the best for acclimatization of the body to the high altitude and the resulting high summit success rate (which is at 96% for G Adventures), the other reason is the beauty of the route which is often described as the most picturesque and spectacular of all popular routes.
Located in North East Tanzania Mount Kilimanjaro is with 5895m the highest mountain in Africa which makes it one of the seven summits. Apart from that it is also the highest free standing mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano with three three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and „Shira“. The highest point is located on Kibo - after the independence of Tanzania it was named Uhuru Peak in 1964 - which is Kiswhali and translates into „freedom Peak“.
--About my Cooperation with G Adventures--
For many years I was searching for a suitable partner who offers outdoor tours which align with my style of traveling as well as my values. After many meetings I’m glad I found this partner with G Adventures who offer many adventurous tour packages for travelers like me…but who also care about the environment and local communities in order to execute sustainable tourism. I forced this cooperation because I like the products and the philosophy of the company. Nevertheless all opinions, recommendations and views are my own.

MARANGU ROUTE
The most popular route up the mountain, it has a well defined path, which has been well set out and where most obstacles have been modified to make them climber friendly. Accommodation on this route is in purpose built mountain huts providing adequate shelter and even bottled water, beer and soft drinks (at high altitude prices!). Despite the human traffic (

MACHAME ROUTE
One day longer on trek, climbing a natural. Rather than manmade path, the Machame Route is a more demanding but much quieter and scenic route up the mountain. Overnights are spent camping in tents which are carried and pitched by the accompanying porters. Highlights of this route are the Shira Plateau, Barranco wall and the Karanga Valley reaching the summit via Stella Point. Because this route is more taxing it is recommended that trekkers.
