The main attraction in Almaty's Panfilov Park is the Russian Orthodox early 20th century Ascension Cathedral, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world (5 months before I had been at Panamaribo's Cathedral, the largest wooden building of the America's).
The church gets mainly visited by Kazakhstan's ethnic Russians. Men are not allowed to wear a hat and almost all women here have their head covered with a scarf. Photography is not allowed inside. The believers make their cross in front of the most venerated icons, especially that of Virgin Mary and of Saint Nicholas. Unlike the Greek Orthodox they also bow their head in front of the icon.
There is a very big gilden iconostasis inside and on the walls there are some frescoes and stained-glass windows. The central cupola, held by pillars, has a flat ceiling. On the outside the cupolas have gilded spires.
In the narthex at the entrance is a shop, which sells candles and icons. Outside the cathedral is a big concrete square with many pigeons

160. The Ascension Cathedral
Cathedral of the Ascension is located on Gogol 40 “V” avenue. The Cathedral was built between 19th and 20th centuries, at the time of eclectisism. Its design is a sample of Russian colonial architecture of the early twentieth century. This period was marked by the use of Russian style in the Asian part of the Empire. The Cathedral has a triumphant and elegant character. Its bright colored facades adjourn the interiors lit with daylight.
Cathedral is built in 1904-1906 by architects K. Borisoglebovsky and S. Troparevsky with participation of the military engineer Zenkov. The Cathedral can place a half thousand visitors. There is a 44.2 meters tall bell tower there, which is one of the tallest wooden structures of the world, located in a seismic zone. U. Dombrovsky said that “the Cathedral is entirely made of wood, and it is as strong as if it was made of stone”. The Cathedral was included into the list of 100 wonders of the world. There are only few wooden buildings that tall in the whole world.
The roof of the Cathedral is decorated with five domes and crosses. In accordance with the Christian tradition the domes were built in honor of Jesus Christ and his four Evangelists. There were some innovations used at the construction of the Cathedral. Protective pedestals and metal ring-shaped underground plinths were used for the seismic protection of the Cathedral. In 1910 there was an earthquake in Almaty rated 10 points. People who witnessed the Cathedral during the earthquake said that it was swaying but remained to stay undestroyed after the earthquake.
During the Soviet period the cathedral hold a radio station and several different organizations. There is radio aerial installed on the bell tower in soviet period. In 1995 N.A.Nazarbayev the country head returned the Cathedral to the Christian eparchy. This act was of a great importance to the Christian people. Alexy, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia arrived to the ceremony of reopening of the Cathedral.
There are two tombstones near the Cathedral. Urey Dombrovsky wrote in his novel that those were the tombs of the governors’ daughter and her kid. However the church officials never did any records confirming this fact. This place was desolated during the long time. The tombstones were restored for the funds of the Cathedral congregation. Now there is a table with engraved lines on it saying: “blessed those people who trust in God before they die”. It is a reminder of the cemetery that used to be here in the 19th century.

Wednesday(4/9/2019) Ascension Cathedral(Zenkov Cathedral) in Almaty :- Ascension Cathedral also known as Zenkov Cathedral, is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located in Panfilov Park in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Completed in 1907, this cathedral isunique as it is made out of wood but without nails. Its height is 56 meters tall, and is claimed to be the second tallest wooden building in the world and definitely the only wooden church in the World.The cathedral survived the 1911 earthquake with minimal damage, even though it was built without any nails, which some bishops attributed to divine intervention,although some credit might also be given to the advanced anti-earthquake techniques invented or employed by the architect, Andrei Pavlovich Zenkov. The Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen is a major park in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The park is located in east-central Almaty in the area surrounding Zenkov Cathedral. It is dedicated to and named after the Panfilov Heroes, 28 soldiers of an Almaty infantry unit who died fighting Nazi German invaders outside of Moscow in World War II. The group takes its name from Ivan Panfilov, the General commanding the 316th division which, in spite of heavy casualties, believed at that time managed to significantly delay the Germans' advance on the capital, buying time for the defenders of the city. An eternal flame commemorating the fallen of the Russian Civil War and the Great Patriotic War burns in front of the giant black monument of soldiers from all 15 Soviet republics.
Ascension Cathedral:
Designed by Andrei Pavlovich Zenkov in 1904, a cathedral was built entirely of wood with the belfry being erected on September 14, 1906. The inner structure of the cathedral was made in the artistic workshops of Moscow and Kiev. The iconostasis was painted by N. Khludov. The cathedral in considerably survived the 1911 earthquake. After the Russian Revolution the cathedral was used to house the Central State Museum of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. From 1930 to 1940 it was used by important public organizations. The first radio transmitters in Almaty were situated in the cathedral's belfry. Restoration work on the cathedral began in 1973 and lasted until 1976. In May 1995 control of the cathedral was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, and after additional restoration work it was reopened for religious services in 1997.
