Here I present a pre-revolution album of photographs of the great Monastery of the Saviour-Transfiguratuion Monastery of Valaam, published in 1914....
Valaam Monastery, is a stauropegic Orthodox monastery in Russian Karelia, located on Valaam, the largest island in Lake Ladoga, the largest lake in Europe. The exact date of the foundation of the monastery is largely unknown. One thopught is that it was founded in the 11th century by a Greek monk, Sergius of Valaam and his companion, Herman of Valaam....
The monastery of Valaam has a unique tradition of singing called the Valaam chant, that combines some features of Byzantine and Znamenny chants.

Nicholas II Last Russian Emperor (Episode 59) - Orthodox Christian Podcast
Intro - Beloved brothers and sisters! This time we will tell you the story of the Holy Martyr, last Russian Emperor Nicholas II. It is quite significant that long before Nicholas II’s ascension to the throne a monk at the Glinsk monastery in Russia, Iliador, chanced to have an enigmatic vision at end of the 19th century.

Holy Annunciation Russian Orthodox Vigil in English (Father Andrew's first solo service as Priest !)
Hi there. Thanks for listening in. This is a nice quite little Full Vigil we served last night (12/07/14) for the Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles. Father Andrew Smith, our 2nd Priest is serving his first service without another Priest for support. The mood is quiet and I am alone in the choir until late in the service with less than a dozen parishioners in Church. I used a variety of melodies Obikhod, Znamenny and Byzantine, for a typical Tone 4 Resurrectional Vigil. Enjoy !

Great Documentary: Russian Americans Uniting Musical Excellence with Orthodox Worship
In an effort to better train church musicians, representatives from most major musical programs and seminaries in ROCOR and the OCA gathered together at the end of 2013 to form the Patriarch Tikhon Russian-American Music Institute (PaTRAM). The work of the newly formed institute was blessed by the Primates of the Orthodox Church in America and the Russian Church Abroad. Building on the work that has been done by music educators in the past, PaTRAM strives to provide continuity through its progressive training programs at every level of Church musical development in both English and Slavonic.
PaTRAM has also partnered with the Media Office of the Eastern American Diocese of ROCOR to produce a documentary about the work and goals of the institute. The 25-minute film, entitled Uniting Musical Excellence with Orthodox Worship, gives an overview of the important role of music in the life of the Orthodox Church and explains how PaTRAM is embarking on an endeavor that could potentially revolutionize the way that the Orthodox conductors and singers receive their musical training in North America.
