Ashokan pillar from the 3rd century B.C. endangered due to superstitions of Djinn
A pristine polished sandstone Topra Ashokan pillar from the 3rd century B.C. rises from the Firoz Shah palace's crumbling remains, one of many pillars of Ashoka left by the Mauryan emperor; it was moved from Topra Kalan in Pong Ghati of Yamunanagar district in Haryana to Delhi under orders of Firoz Shah Tughlaq of Delhi Sultanate, and re-erected in its present location in 1356. The original inscription on the obelisk is primarily in Brahmi script but language was prakrit, with some Pali and Sanskrit added later. The inscription was successfully translated in 1837 by James Prinsep.

Dhamek Stupa & The Ashokan Pillar Sarnath Heritage Site : SARNATH VARANASI
Dhamek Stupa (also spelled Dhamekh andDhamekha, traced to Sanskrit version Dharmarajika Stupa, which can be translated as the Stupa of the reign of Dharma) is a massive stupa located at Sarnath, 13 km away from Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India.
Stupas originated as pre-Buddhist tumuli, in which ascetics were buried in a seated position, called chaitya.] After theparinirvana of the Buddha, his remains were cremated and the ashes divided and buried under eight mounds with two further mounds encasing the urn and the embers. Little is known about these early stupas, particularly since it has not been possible to identify the original ten monuments. However, some later stupas, such as at Sarnath and Sanchi, seem to be embellishments of earlier mounds. The Dhamek Stupa was built in 500 CE] to replace an earlier structure commissioned by the great Mauryan king Ashoka in 249 BCE, along with several other monuments, to commemorate the Buddha's activities in this location. Stupas originated as circular mounds encircled by large stones. KingAshoka built stupas to enshrine small pieces of calcinated bone and other relics of theBuddha and his disciples. An Ashoka pillarwith an edict engraved on it stands near the site.
The Dhamek Stupa is said to mark the spot (Rishipattana which can be translated as where the Rishi arrived) where the Buddha gave the first sermon to his first five brahmin disciples after attaining enlightenment,]revealing his Eightfold Path leading tonirvana. In several of the ancient sources the site of the first sermon is mentioned to have been at a ″Mriga-dayaa-vanam″ or a sanctuary for animals. ( In Sanskrit mriga is used in the sense of game animals, deer being the most common). The last royal endowment at the site is dated to about 12th c. CE, after which the location of the Mrigadayavanam seems to have been lost even to the devout. The stupa was enlarged on six occasions but the upper part is still unfinished.[While visiting Sarnath in 640 CE, Xuanzang recorded that the colony had over 1,500 priests and the main stupa was nearly 300 feet (91 m) high.[
In its current shape, the stupa is a solid cylinder of bricks and stone reaching a height of 43.6 meters and having a diameter of 28 meters. It is the most massive structure in Sarnath.[The basement seems to have survived from Ashoka's structure: the stone facing is chiseled and displays delicate floral carvings of Gupta origin. The wall is covered with exquisitely carved figures of humans and birds, as well as inscriptions in the Brāhmī script.[
The Dhamek Stupa features in the 2014 Indian mystery thriller novel The Emperor's Riddles by Satyarth Nayak.

Sarnath is the Dhamek stupa. It is, in fact, one of the most prominent Buddhist structures in India; it is also referred to as Dhamekh and Dhamekha. Ashoka pillar with an edict engraved on it. Many stupas were built by the Mauryan king Ashoka in order to enshrine small pieces of bones and other relics of Buddha and his disciples. Stupas are circular mounds encircled by large stones.
The Dhamek Stupa represents the deer park (Rishipattana). This park is said to be of great importance as Buddha gave his first sermon, after attaining enlightenment, to his disciples that revealed his “Eightfold Path“. Dhamek stupa is located at the center of Sarnath. Mulgandakuti Vihara, the Buddha Temple, the extensive excavated archaeological site, Digambar Jain Temple, the ASI museum and the Standing statue of Buddha at Thai Buddha Vihar.
Dhamekh Stupa at Sarnath is one of the prominent Buddhist structures in India. Dhamekh Stupa was constructed by the great Mauryan king, Ashoka. The Dhamekh Stupa is cylindrical in shape and about 34 m high and 28.3 m in diameter. The lower portion of the Stupa is covered completely with beautifully carved stones. The borders of Dhamekh Stupa have delicately carved geometrical and floral designs and figures of humans and birds. The base of the Stupa is made of stone with the upper areas of brickwork which probably once had a carved stone fencing. It is believed that Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon at the Dhamekha Stupa. Dhamekh Stupa bears special significance at Sarnath as it signifies the seat of the holy Buddha, as he proclaimed his faith.
Buddhist pilgrims belonging to different countries visit this place for circumlocution of this sacred Stupa and to offer worship to Buddha. Besides the Dhamekh Stupa, Sarnath also has the ruins of Dharmajajika Stupa and that of the original Mulgandha-kuti vihar. Buddha is said to have rested and meditated here while in Sarnath. Emperor Ashoka (273-232 B.C.) was a staunch follower of Buddhism and visited Sarnath and laid the foundation of the Buddhist Sangha here. The Ashoka Pillar bears testimony to his visit. The Lion Capital on top of this pillar is now the National Emblem of India.
Varanasi, India: The Important Buddhist Site of Sarnath
It is a short ride from Varanasi to Sarnath located on the outskirts of Varanasi where Lord Buddha is said to have delivered his first sermon after enlightenment; preaching his four noble truths. The Buddha was enlightened in Bodhgaya and then went to Sarnath seeking his five former companions, taught them what he learned and they also became enlightened.
Important sights are: the Dharmekh Stupa (128 feet high, 93 feet in diameter) dating from around 200 BC and said to be the spot on which Buddha preached his first sermon; Mulangandhakuti Vihara where a small cottage once stood that Buddha lived in; and what remains of the Ashokan pillars with two writings on it. A lion capital once topped the Ashoka Pillar and is now on display inside the Sarnath Archaeological Museum; sorry no photos allowed inside and would you believe they didn't even sell a postcard of the exquisite lions?

Sanchi Stupa |Ashoka Pillar | Madhya Pradesh | Oldest Stone Structure
Sanchi, also written Sanci, is a Buddhist complex, famous for its Great Stupa, on a hilltop at Sanchi Town in Raisen District of the State of Madhya Pradesh,India. It is located in 46 kilometres (29 mi) north-east of Bhopal, capital of Madhya Pradesh. The Great Stupa at Sanchi is one of the oldest stone structure in India[1] and was originally commissioned by the emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. Its nucleus was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. It was crowned by the chatra, a parasol-like structure symbolising high rank, which was intended to honour and shelter the relics. The original construction work of this stupa was overseen by Ashoka, whose wife Devi was the daughter of a merchant of nearby Vidisha. Sanchi was also her birthplace as well as the venue of her and Ashoka's wedding. In the 1st century BCE, four elaborately carved toranas (ornamental gateways) and a balustrade encircling the entire structure were added. The Sanchi Stupa built during Mauryan period was made of bricks. The complex flourished until the 11th century

An adaptation of Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath was adopted as the National Emblem of India on 24 January 1950, the day India became a republic. Forming an integral part of the emblem is the motto inscribed below the abacus in Devanagari script: Satyameva Jayate (English: Truth Alone Triumphs), a quote taken from Mundaka Upanishad, the concluding part of the sacred Hindu Vedas.
