Boating at ashtamudi Lake
Boating in Ashtamudi lake( Ashtamudi kayal) to Pezhumthuruthu(perumon)
Ashtamudi Lake (Ashtamudi Kayal), in the Kollam District of the Indian state of Kerala, is the most visited backwater and lake in the state. It possesses a unique wetland ecosystem and a large palm-shaped (also described as octopus-shaped) water body, second only in size to the Vembanad estuary ecosystem of the state.
Munroe Island Kollam Video | Canoeing in Ashtamudi Lake Kollam
Munroe Island Kollam or Mundrothuruthu is an enchanting backwater destination of Kerala. At the confluence of Kallada River and Ashtamudi Lake, the island is accessible by well connected roads and water navigation networks. There is also a railway station at Munroe Island. This is my experience of canoeing in Ashtamudi Lake or boating at Ashtamudi Lake. Munroe Island is also known as Mundrothuruth.
What to do in Munroe Island?
If you are visiting Munroe or Munro Island, there are a lot of engaging activities that you can take pleasure from. Some of the most common activities that you can enjoy are:
1. Canoeing (This video is about canoeing at Munro island)
2. Coir village visits
3. Nature walks
4. Fishing
5. Local interactions
6. Prawns feeding
7. Learning Kerala Cooking
8. Just relax on the lake shore
Where to stay in Munroe Island?
The island has a few good options for stay and dine. However, you cannot expect luxurious five star hotels or resorts here. There are very good homestay facilities and a few farm houses and smaller resorts.
This video is my experience at Munro Island. I was visiting this place with my family and parents. We enjoyed canoeing in Kallada River, Feeder canals of Ashtamudi Lake, and the vaster Ashtamudi Lake. The view of Kallada river in the morning and Ashtamudi lake with a few fishermen were exciting while our sail through mangrove forest and prawns fields was thrilling.

Ashtamudi Lake, Quilon - Kerala
Astamudi Lake, renowned for its panoramic views is the second largest lake in Kerala, stretching a length of 16kms that sharing 30% of Kollam town.
Ashtamudi Lake (Ashtamudi Kayal) in the Kollam District of Kerala, India, is the second largest and deepest wetland ecosystem, a palm-shaped (also called octopus-shaped) large water body, next only to the Vembanad estuary ecosystem of the state. Ashtamudi means 'eight coned' in the local language of Malayalam. This name is indicative of the lake's topography: a lake with multiple branches. The lake is also called the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala. Ashtamudi Wetland was included in the list of wetlands of international importance, as defined by the Ramsar Convention for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands.
Along both banks of the lake and its backwater canals, coconut groves and palm trees interspersed with towns and villages are seen. Quilon is an important historic port city located on the right bank of the lake and boat cruises are operated by the Kollam Boat Club from Quilon to Alappuzha providing transport access to many other towns and villages along this route, apart from the luxury “house boats” which also operate in the lake. The boat journey is an 8 hour trip, winds through lakes, canals and water bound villages, and gives a complete exposure to the beauty of the backwaters of Ashtamudi Lake. Chinese fishing nets, called cheena vala in the Malayalam language, are used by local fisherman and are a common sight along the waterway.

Munroe Island is 13.54 square kilometre strip of land located at the confluence of Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River, in Kollam district, Kerala, South India. It is named after John Daniel Munro, the British Resident and the Deewan of Travancore. It is a group of eight small islets comprising a total area of about 13.4 sqkm. The island, accessible by road, rail and inland water navigation, is about 25 kilometres (16 mi) from Kollam by road, 38 kilometres (24 mi) north from Paravur, 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) west from Kundara and about 25 kilometres (16 mi) from Karunagapally. As of the 2011 Indian census, the administrative village of Mundrothuruth (which includes nearby small villages as well) has a total population of 9599, consisting of 4636 males and 4963 females.
The place is named in honour of Resident Colonel John Munro of the former Princely State of Travancore. The island measures 13.4 square kilometres (5.2 sq mi) in area.
In 1795 the British established their supremacy in South India and the princely state of Travancore came under their governance. From 1800 onwards, a Resident was appointed by East India Company as administrative head of Travancore. The first Resident was Colonel Colin Macaulay, followed by Colonel John Munro. During his tenure Munro oversaw the land reclamation efforts in the delta where Kallada River joins Ashtamudi Lake and the reclaimed island was named after him as Munroe Island. The Dutch Church here in Munroe Island is one of the ancient churches in Kerala. It was built by the Dutch in 1878. The red brick church is a blend of Dutch-Kerala architecture on the scenic banks of Lake Ashtamudi.
The villagers depended on coconut coir manufacturing as livelihood, however, post Indian Ocean tsunami, things have changed.
The island village is a tourism destination where one can see the coir retting process, coir weaving, fishing, prawns feeding, migratory bird watch, narrow canals and waterways, coconut farms on the lake shore, lagoons, mangrove plants and the beautiful tiny islands of Pathupara.
Kallada Boat Race, which is one of the famous boat races in Kerala, is at Karuvathrakadavu- Muthiraparambu nettayam in Munroethuruth.
Submerging Threat
Low-lying areas of the Island are now under a threat of Submerging in high tides. This is post tsunami phenomena. An expert team from the Thangal Kunju Musaliar College of Engineering, Kollam has started a study into the phenomena. The team headed by Prof. Gouri Antharjanam, and consisting of Prof. Suniil Kumar, Prof. Sruthi. R. Krishnan, Prof. Amal Azad and Prof. Udayakumar made several visits to the Island. The death of Lans Naik Sudheesh of this island in the Border area at Siachin has invoked interest of the outer world to the problems of this Place. The island's population has been steadily declining resulting from an exodus of people unable to cope up with the deteriorating conditions.

PERUMON RAILWAY BRIDGE ASHTAMUDI LAKE KERALA
In the Perumon Train Tragedy, the Bangalore - Kanyakumari Island Express train derailed on the Peruman bridge over Ashtamudi Lake, near Perinadu, Kollam, Kerala, India and fell into the lake, killing 105 people on July 8, 1988.
Officials say the cause for the accident was a tornado. But still the cause of accident remains a mystery. Ten bogie carriages of the Island Express fell into Ashtamudi Lake, and more than 200 persons were seriously injured.
The Peruman Train Tragedy is one of the largest train tragedies in the history of the Indian state of Kerala. Indian Railways constructed a new bridge across the lake. The old bridge remains in memorial of the Peruman Tragedy.
