So, I love going to Myeongdong (preferably in the morning before it gets too busy!) because I can find everything I need in one place! Of course, you can find all of these stores in a lot of different locations in Seoul, but I like Meyongdong because it's a one-stop shop. So it's great if you don't have a lot of time! WHERE TO STAY IN SEOUL | AIRBNB IN MYEONGDONG (ROOM TOUR + TIPS)
WHERE TO STAY IN SEOUL, KOREA
AIRBNB near Myeongdong and Insadong
On my first time in Seoul, Korea, I opted to stay at an airbnb rather than at a usual hotel. I heard some good things fro my friends regarding airbnbs so I decided to give it a try, in Seoul!
Here's what you need to know about AIRBNB
1.) Airbnb is an online marketplace and hospitality service, enabling people to lease or rent short-term lodging including vacation rentals, apartment rentals, homestays, hostel beds, or hotel rooms.
2.) You need to book online using an online payment method like credit card or paypal.
3.) This room that I booked is located in Jongno-Gu, only few minutes away from Jonggak Station. THE NAME OF THE ROOM IS COOL★CUTE 74 Myeongdong.
4.) It is a few blocks away from Insadong and couple blocks from Myeongdong. Perfect spot if you like the shopping part of Seoul.
5.) BEST part is that it is right across the Cheonggyecheon Stream!!! So, you can always go out at night and would still be able to tour.
6.) THIS IS NOT SPONSORED.
7.) However, the airbnb is located right on the busy streets of Jongno. There are karaoke rooms and restaurants right below the building. It could be a PRO or a CON depending on your preference.
8.) I PAID Php 11,630.55 for my stay from November 3 to November 6.
Check in is 3PM and check out is 12 NOON. You can't check in early nor leave your luggages. That's why I showed on my previous vlog where you could rent luggage locker for your stuff.
9.) I was ALONE when I stayed. If you are staying with someone, with friends or with family members, I think the rate would almost be the same.
10.) NOT ALL airbnbs are the same. Please book at your own risk. After this stay, I transferred to a Hotel until November 10. Then, from November 10 to November 12, my BF and I stayed in another airbnb just on the SAME building but a different room and different owner. I was DISAPPOINTED. It wasn't clean, it's small and stuffy. The floor and walls look dirty. The photos look better than the actual room and the sheets look like they were not changed. See, not all airbnbs are same. So, be careful and picky when booking.

Fourth generation ethnic Koreans from Central Asia face deportation in Korea

Eighty years have passed since the forced deportation of ethnic Koreans from the Russian Far East to Central Asian countries.
Still today, many of them struggle to find their home, and that includes those who returned to home soil.
Kim Hyesung turns the spotlight to their side of the story for our News Features tonight.
Sixteen-year-old Lee Mi-yeon is studying hard with her classmates at a high school in Ansan, south of Seoul.
Unlike the other students, she's a Kareisky, an ethnic Korean from Central Asia, who moved to Korea from Uzbekistan in 2011.
After many ups and downs, Mi-yeon says she's finally adjusted to her life in Korea.

I cried almost every day during my first year here in Korea, telling my mom I want to go back to Uzbekistan because I had no friends and everything was new. But after picking up the Korean language and slowly making more friends, I became more open personality-wise. I made more friends and have supportive teachers. I'm really grateful
Mi-yeon's parents came to Korea in 2009, two years before her, to work and settle down.
They say they're glad they were able to live together again, and they're proud to see their daughter doing well in school.

All l wish for... is to see Mi-yeon grow up, go to college, get married, have kids here in Korea and be happy. We've lived in Uzbekistan, Russia, and Korea, and have a somewhat mixed identity. Ultimately I feel like Korea is my home at heart. But because of the visa issue, I'm worried that that my wish might be impossible.
A growing number of ethnic Koreans from Central Asia have moved to South Korea over the last several years -- a total of 40-thousand as of this year. But around a thousand of them, kids like Lee Mi-yeon, the fourth generation, will eventually have to leave the country when they turn 19.
The current Overseas Koreans Act defines overseas Koreans as those with citizenship in another country who have at least one parent or grandparent who possessed Korean citizenship.

The third generation can get national health insurance and work in Korea, but the fourth generation who came with parents with H2 working visa cannot remain in the country on family-sponsored visas once they become adults.
These people are the descendants of Koreans who moved to the Russian Far East during the Japanese colonial rule.
Under Stalin's regime in the Soviet Union, they were forced in 1937 to relocate to Central Asian countries like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
They've lived outside of Korea for decades.
But according to Kim Young-suk, the director of a social welfare organization supporting ethnic Koreans, the Kareski still have a lot in common with Koreans here.

Many formed their own Korean communities even when in Central Asia. Kareisky still maintain a Korean lifestyle and customs, such as eating Korean food, holding ancestral rites and upholding Korean traditional virtues like filial duty.
Kim says if the fourth generation are forced to leave Korea when they turn 19, it could create social problems, not to mention the separation of families.

After having painfully adjusted to Korean society, the fourth generation will have go through a readjustment process all over again in Central Asia. They may not be able to find a job. Above all, they want to stay in Korea, but if forced to leave, it could create anti-Korean sentiment.
An organization in Korea is calling for the current Overseas Koreans Act to be revised.
The People’s Committee for the 80th Anniversary of the Forced Kareisky Relocation submitted a proposal to the Moon Administration on June 6th.
Experts say the 1999 Act is outdated, and that the Korean government has a duty to help the Kareisky. many of whom are descendants of the Korean independence activists of the early 20th century.
But there's no easy fix.

From a common-sense standpoint, the current Act on Overseas Koreans does need changes. But if the government grants visas to all ethnic Koreans from Central Asia, they would also need to give visas to all ethnic Koreans from China. Revising the law could result in discrimination and conflict with the Chinese government. So the Moon Administration definitely needs to take a cautious and wise approach.
Even after several decades, many ethnic Koreans from Central Asia are still struggling to find a place to call home.
As more of them return to Korea, there'll be more in the fourth generation living in fear, not knowing how long they can stay with their family.
And time to find a fair solution is running out.

Plastic Surgery: The Cost of Beauty | 101 East
Seoul, South Korea's capital, is at the heart of a growing obsession to look perfect.
In the Apgujeong district of Seoul, the streets are lined with endless rows of plastic surgery clinics. Business is booming. In South Korea, v-shaped jaws, double eyelids and dimpled smiles are all the rage and people from across the nation, and the world, are flocking to the clinics for plastic surgery, supporting an industry worth $5bn a year.
More than 4,000 clinics provide cosmetic surgery in Seoul, with an estimated 650,000 people a year going under the knife.
But the surgeries performed by some of the clinics do not always live up to patients' expectations and the quest for beauty and profits is putting lives at risk.
So Yi Yoon has suffered many medical problems since having plastic surgery, including not being able to close one of her eyes. She now works two jobs to pay off her debts and is suffering from depression.
On this edition of 101 East, we look at what is driving the growth of this booming business and at what price to individuals and the wider Korean society?

In i-D’s latest video series, tattoo artist and activist Grace Neutral explores how younger generations are challenging traditional views around beauty and body image across the world. Through a number of dramatic body modifications, Grace has evolved from self-confessed alternative weirdo to actual pixie dream-girl with purple eyes, pointed elf ears, a forked-tongue, scarification and no belly button. Interested in ideas of alternative beauty and pushing boundaries of positive body image, the 27-year-old navigates us through changing attitudes to how we look. In the first four episodes of Beyond Beauty, we follow the tattoo-covered alien princess to South Korea as she investigates the ways in which Seoul’s youth conform and challenge mainstream beauty ideals. Although it’s socially acceptable for teenagers to have cosmetic surgery within its six billion dollar domestic beauty industry, it is illegal to be a tattoo artist. From underground tattoo studios to specialist club nights, Grace meets the young South Koreans embracing alternative ideas of beauty and discovers the impact it has on their lives.
