Bangkok 4K - Skyline Expressway Sunrise - Driving Downtown
Tuesday sunrise drive around Bangkok as I look for great views of the skyline from the elevated toll expressways. Bangkok has 89 skyscrapers over 40 stories tall, ranking #12 worldwide for skyscrapers. My favorite part is the skyline around 21:30 as I drive towards the famous State Tower building in the Bang Rak business district of Bangkok. The building (hotel primarily) has almost 70 stories with balconies all the way up with incredible views. Enjoy!
Bangkok is the capital and most populous city of Thailand and is among the world's top tourist destinations, and has been named the world's most visited city consistently in several international rankings. The Asian investment boom in the 1980s and 1990s led many multinational corporations to locate their regional headquarters in Bangkok. The city is now a regional force in finance and business. It is an international hub for transport and health care, and has emerged as a centre for the arts, fashion, and entertainment. The city is known for its street life and cultural landmarks. The Grand Palace and Buddhist temples including Wat Arun and Wat Pho stand in contrast with other tourist attractions such as the nightlife scenes of Khaosan Road and Patpong.
Bangkok's rapid growth coupled with little urban planning has resulted in a haphazard cityscape and inadequate infrastructure. An inadequate road network, despite an extensive expressway network, together with substantial private car usage, have led to chronic and crippling traffic congestion, which caused severe air pollution in the 1990s. The city has since turned to public transport in an attempt to solve the problem. Five rapid transit lines are now in operation, with more systems under construction or planned by the national government and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
Bangkok is known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or simply Krung Thep. The city occupies 1,568.7 square kilometres (605.7 sq mi) in the Chao Phraya River delta in central Thailand, and has a population of over eight million, or 12.6 percent of the country's population. Over fourteen million people (22.2 percent) lived within the surrounding Bangkok Metropolitan Region at the 2010 census, making Bangkok the nation's primate city, significantly dwarfing Thailand's other urban centres in importance.
Bangkok traces its roots to a small trading post during the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the 15th century, which eventually grew and became the site of two capital cities: Thonburi in 1768 and Rattanakosin in 1782. Bangkok was at the heart of the modernization of Siam, later renamed Thailand, during the late-19th century, as the country faced pressures from the West. The city was at the centre of Thailand's political struggles throughout the 20th century, as the country abolished absolute monarchy, adopted constitutional rule, and underwent numerous coups and several uprisings. The city grew rapidly during the 1960s through the 1980s and now exerts a significant impact on Thailand's politics, economy, education, media and modern society.
State Tower is a skyscraper located on Silom Road, Bang Rak business district, Bangkok, Thailand, adjacent to Charoen Krung Road. Built in 2001, it is the largest building in Southeast Asia, with 300,000 m2 (3,200,000 sq ft) floor area. State Tower has 68 floors and is 247 m (810 ft) tall, making it the third tallest building in Thailand as in 2011 and 139th in the world. It is also the tallest mixed-use building in Thailand.
Conceived by Thai architect Professor Rangsan Torsuwan in the early 1990s and designed by Rangsan Architecture, the massive building is characterised by its thirty-meter tall golden rooftop dome and neo-classical balconies. It was originally named Silom Precious Tower, later Royal Charoen Krung Tower (RCK Tower) and then State Tower.
State Tower contains condominiums, serviced apartments, offices and retail units. It is also home to two five-star hotels, lebua at State Tower and Tower Club at lebua. There is a forty-story high atrium inside, and on the 64th floor is Sirocco, the world's highest open-air restaurant with a panoramic view of Bangkok.
State Tower is owned by Challenge Group.
The Expressway Authority of Thailand (Thai: การทางพิเศษแห่งประเทศไทย) (EXAT) is a state enterprise under the Ministry of Transport. It was founded in 1972, and operates Thailand's expressway (ทางพิเศษ thang phiset) system, which refers to (usually elevated) high-capacity controlled-access highways serving the Greater Bangkok area and some nearby provinces.
euronews Life - Thailand: sun, sea and a booming business economy
Thailand evokes images of endless, sandy beaches but there is a lot more to this South East Asian country. In the first edition of our four part series 'Thai Life', we take a look at the kingdom's business spirit. To find out why Thailand is such a popular investment market, euronews headed to its capital, Bangkok.
With a population of around 10 million, it can sometimes feel like all the city's inhabitants are on the streets at once. Bangkok is at the heart of the Thai economy with 90% of the country's export trade taking place in the capital. The Asian Kingdom is also becoming an evermore attractive production location for foreign businesses, which are attracted by its stable infrastructure and tax incentives.
Stiebel Eltron, a housing technology manufacturer is one of the 500 German companies to start up operations in Thailand.
It learned early on that doing business 'Thai style' requires a great deal of cultural awareness and tact; something the company's Export Manager, Holger Palla knows all too well:
In Germany you can raise your voice (literally bang your fist on the table) and speak more openly and direct. Maybe even a little too loud and direct. In Thailand you can't do that at all. You have to be careful not to embarrass other people -- they shouldn't lose face so you have to show respect and proceed more subtly.
Yupa Tassri, General Manager at Siebel Eltron takes care of the staff's needs, bridging any cultural divides:
In Thai most people respect Buddha, so the Germans will never understand how we respect him.
My main challenge is to mix and match between Thai and German mindsets, to make sure that they understand each other and work together in harmony.
Teamwork plays a vital role, ensuring the working day runs smoothly, as Roland Hoehn, Asian Pacific Director at Siebel Eltron explains:
Thai's like to work in groups. They want to have Sanuuk once in a while. Sanuuk is probably best translated as fun and is simply a part of the Thai culture. If they aren't having fun, they leave the company. So harmony and fun are important.
For foreign companies, the benefits of working in Thailand, seem to outweigh concerns voiced by some businesses over bureaucracy and a lack of qualified labour.
John Svengren, the Executive Director of the European Asean Business Centre believes the key to doing business successfully in Thailand is taking the time to build bonds with colleagues:
Relationships mean a lot more for one thing. You don't come to an Asian country and do business on the first day. You need to have relationships, particularly if you're in joint venture operations with Thai partnerships. It can take years to develop confidence and trust.
This is not only true for the industrial sector but also for tourism, another important area for foreign investors, especially European.
This year alone, more than 20 million visitors are expected, making up around 6% of the nation's total economy.
The tourism industry has been trying to attract new target groups and green tourism is becoming increasingly popular. At Karon beach in Phuket, a Swiss run hotel was the first on the island to receive the Green Globe certificate for sustainability.
The hotel's General Manager at the Mövenpick resort, Hansreudi Frutiger talks to euronews about his accomplishment:
We began with the Green Globe one year ago. We wanted to explain to our Thai employees what this means to us; that we want to help the world stay as it was and is. We've a small garden where we grow tomatoes and cucumbers alongside various Thai herbs and spices which our chefs use in our kitchen's dishes.
Thailand is a country of contrast. While it is finding success putting itself on the world business map - tradition and heritage remain an integral part of life.

TTM+ 2015: Forecasting the Future of Tourism in Thailand
For the second year in a row the iTravel Channel team visited the Thailand Travel Mart Plus Amazing Gateway to the Greater Mekong Subregion (TTM+) during 3-5 June 2015, in Bangkok. Now in its 14th year, this is Thailand’s largest annual B2B tourism and travel trade event held at Impact Muang Thong Thani.
Natalie spoke with Mrs. Juthaphorn Rerngronasa, Acting Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), following an international media briefing at TTM+ discussing the outlook of Thailand’s tourism industry highlighted by the event. “The theme of this year’s TTM, “Experience with Us,” reflects the idea that travellers want to “experience” and learn something new to satisfy a deeper need for participation, creativity, community, and idealism.
It is in line with the “2015 Discover Thainess,” campaign, which highlights the experiences offered by the Thai way of life, Thai culture and hands-on Thai activities; such as, Thai boxing, Thai massage, Thai cooking, and Thai classical dance.”
The largest market for tourists into Thailand currently is from East Asia (China, Korea, Japan etc.) With such a huge market share we spoke to the TAT Executive Director for the East Asia Region, Mrs. Srisuda Wanapinyosak, to learn why East Asian tourists love visiting Thailand and what they will be doing to retain and increase this.
The TTM+ hosted 362 buyers from 50 countries. China was the largest contingent (42) followed by the United Kingdom (29), Australia (20), India (18), ), the United States of America and South Africa (15). With such a diverse group of attendees to TTM+ ITravel spoke to both Buyers and Sellers to get their opinion on the effect of this kind of trade show and this country as a travelling destination. Many, both based in Thailand and abroad, applauded Thailand for being a country that offers everything to a traveller.
From luxury city life to stunning nature, cuisine and culture, it’s a destination that can fit many demographics. A small but growing market is North American visitors to Thailand. iTravel learnt that they choose this destination primarily because of the unique culture – its completely different to their homeland. Also because Thailand is a long-haul flight away, people feel special and privileged to experience the charm of Thailand because it’s a rare destination.
And tourist figures for Thailand are still looking promising, especially after Bangkok remains the Asia-Pacific’s top destination city for air travel, and is the world’s second top destination city after first-ranked London, the newly released MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index for 2014 shows. Between 1st January 2015 and 25th May 2015, Thailand received 11.95 million visitors, an increase of 19% on the previous year. This provided income of 17.12 Billion USD. While it’s estimated that the country will host in total 28 million visitors for the entire year, representing 42 Billion USD in revenue.
Thailand Launches App for Muslim Tourists
Another innovation announced at the TTM+ was that The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is to launch its first App designed specifically to make it easier for the growing number of Muslim visitors to find Muslim-friendly products, services and facilities nationwide. To be launched on 22 June, 2015, the App for IOS and Android will be both an online and offline guidebook that will help Muslim visitors find mosques, halal restaurants and hotels, shopping centers with prayer rooms, and other facilities around the country.
