Askeaton Castle. Limerick, Ireland.
General views of Askeaton Castle. Dating from 1199, here's some info from wiki:
Among the many historic structures in the town are a Franciscan Friary dating from 1389 and a castle dating from 1199. The castle was abandoned to crown forces in 1580 - its walls blown up by the fleeing Alien defenders - after the fall of Carrigafoyle Castle to the English during the Desmond Rebellions.
This is a very interesting town just off the main road. Well worth stopping by for a few hours. Very interesting historical sites combined with a town that doesn't seem to have been ruined by recent developments.

Askeaton Castle
Askeaton Castle was built by William De Burgo in 1199. It stands on a small island in the River Deel. During the Desmond rebellion in 1580 the walls were blown when news was heard of the of the fall of nearby Carrigafoyle Castle. It was finally dismantled as a viable fortress by Cromwellian forces in 1652. The shell remains today but there are fragments of a 13th century wall and a 15th century Banqueting hall. The castle stands by the bridge in Askeaton and is surrounded in this wonderful little heritage town by it's own Hellfire Club to the east and the nearby ruins of the Franciscan friary built in 1389. The castle was closed to the public as some structural renovation was being conducted. The tourist office has all sorts of information by the bridge with very friendly staff..
To reach Askeaton take the N69 from Limerick. Parking is readily available near the tourist office.

Made during Welcome to the Neighborhood residency at Askeaton, Co. Limerick, July 2011
The video formed part of three interventions in the 11c friary.
Originally the friaries cloister garth would have had a tight green lawn, with no plants or flowers to distract the monks. A green lawn was considered a tool to contemplation and would have formed a key focal point for the friary.
I introduced green back into the friary changing the perception of the space and peoples response to the ruin,
