Front nine askernish golf club
Description
Reshaping of the 6th green at Askernish Golf Course
To get any construction work to blend in with the natural surroundings is a true art and relies on the skill and vision of the shaper (Conor and Gordon).
We are very fortunate to have had help from people regarded as the best in the industry at what they do.
Tim Johnson (Course Manager at Penn Golf Club), Conor Walsh (of Conor J Walsh Golf Course Construction) and Gordon Irvine (Master Keeper and golf course consultant) donated their time and expertise to Askernish and with the help of locals Allan MacDonald and Nollie MacKinnon completed work on the 6th green to give it more challenge & character. This was originally flattened in 1930 to make way for a runway.
Thanks to Eabhal for the track featured in the video “The Musicians Nest” produced by Lews Castle College Music Benbecula with the support of Stòras Uibhist.

Spors na seachdain OB Askernish
The Askernish Open is now the largest Open Golf Competition in the North of Scotland, as well as being one of the remotest. John Morrison presents 'Spòrs na Seachdain' live from the event, including Club Captain Patrick Forbes firing off the first ball with a set of hickory clubs which were discovered on the course during its renovation. Players and organisers regale their passion for both golf and the course. The North Uist Athletics Association celebrate their 21st anniversary and alongside local sporting events we hear from the Johnny Walker Championships at Gleneagles, the latest Scottish Football and Shinty stories.

Knur & Spell
As late as the 1970s, a sport peculiar to the north of England was still being played in the Calder Valley.
Knur and spell -- more usually billets or billeting, a variation of the ancient game played locally, attracted huge support in its heyday, with hundreds of pounds changing hands.
Knur and spell is believed to have originated in medieval times and was often played on Shrove Tuesday and Good Friday.
The game was at the height of its popularity in the 19th century, played mainly in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Billets, or billeting, acquired an equally enthusiastic following in the Calder Valley area where players congregated on any large open field and competed for prizes such as copper kettles.
Interest dwindled as wages rose and working men were able to afford to indulge in sports such as poncey space wasting golf. There are still many, however, who have fond memories of knur and spell, truly game of the English working class.
World Business: The Lost Links 05/09/08
World Business: If you play golf, youll know just how easy it is to lose a ball. Its a bit harder to lose a golf club, but, given a rainy day, a slippery grip and a water hazard, it can happen. One thing thats much harder to lose is an entire golf course. But around 70 years ago, an island in the Scottish Hebrides did just that, but the good news is theyve found it again.
Machrihanish Dunes - The Way Golf Began
More than 130 years ago, Old Tom Morris recognized the potential for great golf here in this rugged, romantic corner of Scotland. The site of Machrihanish Dunes featured 23 natural holes, defined as those which fit so well into the natural landscape prior to construction that only minimal effort is required to ready them for play in terms of grading and shaping work.
Of the roughly 275 acres on which the course sits, just seven were disturbed during the construction of the course. Only tees and greens were shaped. The course's routing, as well as positioning of tees and greens, was dictated by the lay of the land and presence of several endangered species of flora and fauna. The course flows effortlessly to, from and along the sea, inviting you to step back in time to the days when Old Tom Morris laid out Machrihanish Golf Club.

America’s Oldest Public Golf Course | Adventures In Golf Season 4
The Big Apple. The Empire State. The city that never sleeps. Erik finds himself in New York for this Adventures in Golf, presented by United, to play the oldest public golf course in the United States.
Golfers first teed it up at Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx back in 1895. The park charged nothing to play (unless you hired a caddie, which would set you back a whopping 15 cents). Because of this, and its proximity to New York’s 1-train station, the course was constantly packed.
Demand to play was so massive in the 1920s that the course had to do something. The answer, a reservation system. In other words, Van Cortlandt became the birthplace to tee times in America.

In addition to the abundance of local and regional golf, you'll also learn about hotels and dining.
