Askja tours in Iceland with local guide - www.kip.is
Askja is a caldera located in the center of Iceland, in the mountains Dyngjufjöll. Inside the caldera is a deep lake, and a crater with geothermal water. It is sometimes suitable to bathe in it although the path down to the crater is often impassable due to how steep it is.
The trip it self to the Caldera is through the biggest desert of Iceland, called Ódáðahraun, along the glacier river Jökulsá á Fjöllum.
The tour starts early in the morning since normally the tours to Askja are about 12 hours long. Pickup is on request, most often from the guesthouses and hotels in the Laugar area, or Mývatn. From Laugar we drive along Lake Mývatn and head to the east through lava fields. At the crater Hrossaborg, we make our turn to the south on the gravel road F88. We will cross rivers on the way, fords, and the river Grafarlandaá is the first one. There we take our first stop on enjoy the pureness and beauty of the this spring fed river that comes from under the Lava field and forms a small waterfall where the ford is.
Grafarlandaá
River Grafarlandaá, here we stop after crossing a river
After that our tour leads us through lava fields with great contrasts until we reach the ford at river Lindaá, another spring fed river. Next stop is the nature reserve Herðubreiðarlindir oasis (nearby mt. Herðubreið). Here we take another stop where my guests can use the washrooms (toilets) and take a look at the special nature of this place. In Herðurbreiðarlindir, I guide my guests in a few minutes walk through the place and take you the the location where our most famous outlaw hid during the winter of 1774-1775.
Next on our way is the magnificent place and waterfall called Gljúfrasmiður, a waterfall in the glacier river Jökulsá fjöllum. It has shaped the landscape over time into forms that are hard to imagine.
We then head to Dyngjufjöll, where the Askja caldera is, but first we stop at Dreki to have lunch (there are no shops in the highland so please bring a lunch with you). After our lunch, we drive to Vikraborgir craters where we start our 2,4km walk to the crater Víti and the Lake of Askja. Vikraborgir are the craters where the NASA Apollo mission astronauts’ training took place in 1965 and 1967.
Depending on the weather and time, I sometimes take an alternative route back home. It’s accross the river of Jökulsá, over a bridge near Upptyppingar and through Krepputunga to Möðrudalur where there is a restaurant serving refreshments.
I went on up to 40 trips to Askja on a super jeep with guests July and August 201gljufrasmidur4 and it always brings me great joy and happiness to be able to show this unique area to my guests.

Trip on Iceland: N1-Tour around the Island, best Video of Iceland!
Game of Thrones: From July 9th until July 20th, we went for a trip to your beautiful country taking the ferry from denmark. Luckily we were equiped with a Land Cruiser (which has been iceland-optimized in Reykjavik back in the 90th), my good friend Pete Ruppert - he is a famous fashion photographer here in germany and gained off-road experience with his Cruiser in Australia, the Sahara, Israel and Jordania etc. - had the idea to revisit iceland (for him the 8th time - my first visit) taking his son Paul (13) and my daughter Eva (12). We toured the central highlands, went to Askja and the northern parts of Vatnajökull, experienced some transmission probs which made us follow the main circular road (to stay near possible tech support), to Reykjavik, the blue lagoon, Thingvellir, Vik, Höfn and back to the ferry. Kids and us where overwhelmed by the impressions of a landscape which literally changes behind every corner. The weather wasn't always nice but even rainy days produce a special charakter. All in all a perfect trip - the Kids signed up for 'not taking' electronical devices - and they did not regret.!

Driving in Iceland (For Nuts Only)
DRIVING IN ICELAND
When I've arrived to the river these two car were standing on the other side contemplating whether to cross or not. I stopped hoping that they will cross first so I will know how to negotiate the river. But they did not move. After 5 minutes waiting I decided to cross first. Pity i did not have third hand to make a movie. It could be interesting to see while in the middle of the river I felt that I am in canoe and not in the car. Honestly these were really anxious moments. When I arrived on the other side of the river excited and shaky they at last started to cross and then I made my movie. I believe it was good I went first since if I would see them crossing I don't believe I would dare to cross.
Anyway after this ford any other crossing of rivers in Interior was just Piece of Cake. Since there are virtually no existing bridges in Iceland Interior one have to be ready for this kind of scenario. Sometimes it's more challenging sometimes less. But it is always fun. And if you are looking for adrenaline rush, at least you know where to go.
The whole movie is about driving in Iceland Interior -- the most beautiful part of the country but far most challenging as well.
All shots are taken in Interior -- some time from inside of the car, sometime from outside. However the most challenging fords are not taking from the car since one have full hands while struggling through the river. For Icelanders it is part of daily routine -- but for us it is nothing else but adrenaline rush.
In last sequence of the movie taking by my Icelandic friend I am crossing river in Jokulgili -- some 20 km drive through the valley which was more or less continues crossing river after river. He had lots of fun -- I am not sure about same for myself.

Hekla is a stratovolcano located in the south of Iceland with a height of 1,491 metres (4,892 ft). Hekla is Iceland's most active volcano; over 20 eruptions have occurred in and around the volcano since 874. During the Middle Ages, Icelanders called the volcano the Gateway to Hell.
Landmannalaugar (Flying over Landmannalaugar Highland Iceland):
Landmannalaugar (Icelandic, meaning the people's pools) is a region near the volcano Hekla in southern section of Iceland's highlands.
The Landmannalaugar area is a popular tourist destination and hiking hub in Iceland's highlands. The area displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolite mountains and expansive lava fields, not far from the service center.

Ice cave Kverkfjöll
The mountain range Kverkfjöll (1,764 m) is situated on the north-eastern border of the glacier Vatnajökull in Iceland. With their glacier Kverkjökull, they are to be found between the Vatnajökull and the Dyngjufjöll (s. Askja). The mountains are still active volcanoes. Especially around 1720, they were often erupting and causing glacier runs.
Under the mountains, there is a very big and hot magma chamber which lead to the originating of glacier caves. In the meantime, they cannot be visited any more because they could collapse.
Askja is a stratovolcano situated in a remote part of the central highlands of Iceland. The name Askja refers to a complex of nested calderas within the surrounding Dyngjufjöll mountains, which rise to 1,510 m (4,954 ft).
The region is only accessible for a few months of the year. Being situated in the rain-shadow to the NE of the Vatnajökull icecap, the area receives only about 450 mm of rainfall annually. The area was used during training for the Apollo program to prepare astronauts for potential lunar conditions.

Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake situated in an area of active volcanism in the north of Iceland, not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks.
Kerlingarfjöll (1,477 m (4,846 ft)) is a mountain range in Iceland situated in the Highlands of Iceland near the Kjölur highland road. The volcanic origin of these mountains is evidenced by the numerous hot springs and rivulets in the area. And indeed, they are part of a large volcano system of 100km² (38.6 square mile). The volcanoes of the range are tuyas.
