Eritrean city asmara
The town of Asmara,Eritrea
Asmara (/ˈæsˈmɑːrə/ əs-MAHR-ə; Tigrinya: አስመራ; Arabic: أسمرة), or Asmera, is the capital and most populous city of Eritrea and the Central Region. It sits at an elevation of 2,325 metres (7,628 ft), making it the sixth highest capital in the world by altitude. The city is located at the tip of an escarpment that is both the northwestern edge of the Eritrean highlands and the Great Rift Valley in neighbouring Ethiopia. In 2017, the city was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved modernist architecture.[3][4] Asmara was first settled in 800 BC with a population ranging from 100 to 1000. The city was then founded in the 12th century CE after four separate villages unified to live together peacefully after long periods of conflict.[5] Originally, according to Eritrean Tigrinya oral traditional history, there were four clans living in the Asmara area on the Kebessa Plateau: the Gheza Gurtom, the Gheza Shelele, the Gheza Serenser and Gheza Asmae. These towns were frequently attacked by clans from the low land and from the rulers of seger mereb melash (which now is a Tigray region in Ethiopia), until the women of each clan decided that to defeat their common enemy and preserve peace the four clans must unite. The men accepted, hence the name Arbate Asmera. Arbate Asmara literally means, in the Tigrinya language, the four (feminine plural) made them unite.[6] Eventually Arbate was dropped and it has been called Asmara which means they [feminine, thus referring to the women] made them unite. There is still a district called Arbaete Asmara in the Administrations of Asmara. It is now called the Italianized version of the word Asmara. The westernized version of the name is used by a majority of non-Eritreans, while the multilingual inhabitants of Eritrea and neighboring peoples remain loyal to the original pronunciation, Asmera.
The missionary Remedius Prutky passed through Asmara in 1751, and described in his memoirs that a church built there by Jesuit priests 130 years before was still intact.[7]
Four big landmarks of the city are the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Kidane Mehret Cathedral of the Catholic faith, the Enda Mariam Cathedral of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church, and the Al Khulafa Al Rashiudin Mosque of the Islamic faith. Christians and Muslims have lived peacefully together in Asmara for centuries. The religious majority in Asmara are Orthodox Christians. The population in the Central Region is 89 percent Christian (almost 84 percent Orthodox, 4 percent Roman Catholic, and more than 1 percent Protestant) and 5 percent Muslim.[16]
Asmara is divided into 13 districts or administrative areas. These districts are subdivided into North, North-West, North-East, South-East, South-West, East, West and Central areas. The thirteen districts (or Neous Zobas) are:

HELLO FROM COUNTRY #172 - ERITREA!
I'm thrilled to be back in Africa where I will be spending the remaining 3 months of the year! Many of you probably haven’t heard of Eritrea before and that’s because it’s a relatively new country and it’s notoriously difficult to enter (top 5 in the world). After 48 hours of roaming around the capital of Asmara and the ancient port city of Massawa, I’ve really enjoyed my time here.
I’m getting flashbacks to when I was in Ethiopia, yet also touches of Yemen Somaliland and Italy. Yes - ITALY! Eritrea is a former Italian colony and their influence is remarkably well-preserved in the form of giant cathedrals, pizza parlors, gelato shops, old Italian cars, appertivos and many people can still speak fluent Italiano.
The capital of Asmara is VERY safe, with kind hearted people and surprisingly the weather is cold here (2,400 meters high). Unfortunately due to WiFi issues, I haven't been able to upload anything until now, but there’s no hurry, because life is wonderful here! More to come soon ????????

ERITREA | History of MEDEBER - መደበር - One of Asmara's historic Landmarks
In the course of making tours one could not miss to visit to Caravel Seraglio (Medeber) that was engineered by an Italian architect Cavanari Edwardo. Situated at the northeastern of Asmara, Medeber was constructed to become a market place for used items. At this time, Medeber has become a center of invention and innovation where youths show their creative talent in modifying goods for a better use and making varied utensils and other household items as well as varied types of furniture.

Larger and older buses may be terribly slow, every other vehicle on the road passing your choice of transport with amazing velocity. So judge the quality of the bus before buying your ticket (if alternatives are available). Fast Toyota mini buses may charge an up to 250% surcharge on prices mentioned above.
Public Transport Zoba Maakel also rents mini buses (30 persons) for 3000-4000 Nakfa per day (driver inclusive).

The Enda Mariam coptic cathedral of Asmara, Eritrea
Enda Mariam Cathedral is an Eritrean Orthodox church in Asmara, Eritrea. The cathedral is located on Arbate Asmara Street.
In the Tigrinya language enda (እንዳ), when combined with another noun, indicates a structure associated with that other thing. Thus enda bani (bread) means a bakery, enda afras (horses) means a stable, enda dewel (bell) means a church tower or belfry, enda tseba (milk) means a dairy.[1] Mariam (ማርያም) means Mary. The church is also called Kidisti Mariam (Saint Mary).[2]
In its present rationalist/modernist style, the church dates from 1938, when an unknown Italian architect,[3] added the upper portions of the two flanking towers and the modernistic treatment of the façade to the 1920 form designed by Ernesto Gallo.[2][3][4] The 1920 form has also been attributed to Odoardo Cavagnari,[5] who designed Asmara's Opera and Asmara's futuristic Fiat Tagliero service station,[6] and who was Asmara's Chief of Public Works,[7]
Both the central block and the two large freestanding square towers that flank it are built in alternate layers of brick and stone, emulating the layers of wood and stone of Aksumite architecture, a technique that has been for centuries in use in the Eritrean highlands. The protruding wooden support beams in these structures have been named monkey heads.[4][8][9]
It is one of three prominent religious landmarks in the city, the others being the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and Kulafah Al Rashidan Great Mosque.
The church's Nigdet (religious feast) of Saint Mary is celebrated on 30 November (1 December if the following Gregorian calendar year is a leap year).[14]

Earlier forms Edit
In his account of the visit to Eritrea in 1891 by a Royal Commission sent by the Italian government, Ferdinando Martini, in line with his derogatory attitude towards all matters concerning the native Abyssinians, described the then church at Asmara as less decent than the huts for hay in Italian farmyards.[10] The illustrated fourth (1896) edition of his book includes a photograph of the church,[11] some seven metres long, with traditional monkey head walls and a thatched roof whose projection beyond the walls was supported by rough poles.
A 1922 photograph of the church and its two towers in their 1920 form[12] shows that it then had no trace of the modernistic elements that in 1938 made it decidedly more elegant.
