As one of China's oldest cities, the city has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous dynasties. It also represents the birthplace of Hemudu Culture, which itself has a history of over 7000 years. These early civilizations lived and thrived in the area, and have contributed greatly to make the city what it is today; an economically-developed, modern city with a profound cultural foundation.
Ningbo is a city with strong Buddhist connections boasting a number of visually-impressive, historical temples. The 1700 year-old Asoka Temple houses the rare Buddhist relics of Sakyamuni, who is the founder of Buddhism; the Tiantong Temple, with a history of over 1600 years, is renowned for its fantastic scenery and subtle architectural style; and the Baoguo Temple boasts one of the best-preserved wooden structures of its type in the country.

Ningbo has been an important port city for foreign trade since the Song Dynasty (960-1279). After the Opium War (1840-1842), it became one of the top-five ports in China, successfully utilizing its favorable location for water transport. Today, despite its well-developed economy and infrastructure, it remains surrounded by charming natural scenery.

Putuo Shan and its temples are sacred to the Bodhisattva
Avalokitesvara, a goddess of compassion. Legends tell that
Avalokitesvara attained supreme enlightenment upon the island and
that Sudhana, another Bodhisattva, came to Putuo Shan to pay homage to
Avalokitesvara. Mount Putuo first became a Buddhist Sanctuary during the
Tang Dynasty. Legends tell of an Indian Monk, arriving late in the 9th century,
who had received instruction and a seven‐hued precious stone from the
Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. In 916, the Japanese monk Huie was stranded at
Mount Putuo while bringing a statue of Avalokitesvara from Mount Wutai to
Japan. He prayed to the Goddess for help and his call was answered. In
gratitude he built at temple upon Mount Putuo to enshrine the statue of the
Goddess he had been carrying. This is the so‐called Bukenqu (Reluctant to Go)
temple in Mount Putuo. Hsuan Tsang, the celebrated monk of the Tang
Dynasty is also known to have visited Putuo Shan on his pilgrimage to India.
One-thousand-year-old Baoguo temple hall to be repaired
A one-thousand-year old temple hall in China is going to be repaired. It's the oldest surviving wooden structure at Baoguo Temple, a Buddhist temple located in eastern China's Ningbo city in Zhejiang Province.

RoadtripChina 开溜 - Siming Mountain Zhejiang Ningbo
On our first episode of Roadtrip China, we head out to camp at Siming Mountain in Zhejiang Province. A bit touristy but still a pretty sweet drive and some nice scenery. 3 hour drive from Shanghai, one of the few places with minimal light pollution which allows you to get some nice milky way shots.
