The Temples of Colombo, Blessings from a Monk at Gangaramaya – Sri Lanka, Vlog #37
Hey You!
Part 2 of our first day in Colombo ended pretty spectacularly. We've never seen amazing temples like the ones here. Seema Malaka was our first stop, a Buddhist temple for meditation and rest, rather than worship. After a short Tuktuk ride we made our way to Gangaramaya Temple, one of the most important temples in Sri Lanka. In houses many ancient and significant Buddhist artifacts, which we saw up close as we were being blessed by a monk.
We went looking for more information about Sri Lanka culture and ended up at the Natural History Museum (which some of you may know has NO CULTURAL INFORMATION AT ALL). So we headed home as the sun came down. What a day.
We hope you enjoy!
We will also be going to Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and maybe even Tibet. And then moving onto Europe after. So stay tuned!
We hope you enjoy our adventures. Please Like and Subscribe to see more of the stuff we'll be getting up to. Comment if you'd like to say hi.

Asokaramaya Buddhist Temple is a Buddhist temple in Kalutara, Sri Lanka. It was built during the 1870s to shelter disciples of Aluthgama Sangharatne who came to hear the monk's sermons. A wealthy local resident funded the temple's construction and subsequent expansion.
In 1873, Buddhist monk Aluthgama Sangharatne came to the village of Etanamadala in northern Kalutara District. He took up residence in a hermitage located in the jungle near the Kalu Ganga River. Aluthgama Sangharatne sought alms from villagers, and they gathered at the hermitage to hear his sermons. Local resident Elliyas Fernando, a wealthy resident of northern Kalutara, was impressed by Aluthgama Sangharatne's sermons and become the monk's primary benefactor.

Inside Gangaramaya temple Colombo Sri Lanka
Gangaramaya temple, built in the 1800s, this is the most important place of Buddhist learning and worship in Colombo. The sprawling complex is a bewildering assault on the senses. Packed with worshipers, tourists, clouds of incense, chanting, elephants (alive and stuffed), and a collection of everything even the slightest bit related to Buddhism, there is enough here to occupy a huge chunk of time.
Gangaramaya is one of the top sights in Colombo. Don’t pass up a visit to this amazing, living center of Buddhism.

Asokaramaya aka Pankuliya Samadhi Buddha Statue, Pankuliya, Anuradhapura (2018) – 2 of 2
Asokaramaya is located in a beautiful surrounding in the village of Pankuliya. This is a fairly unknown site to the average pilgrim but has one of the best carved Samadhi Buddha Statues in the country today.
This statute equals the quality of the famous Samadhi Statue and the Tholuvila Statue (which is now kept in the Colombo museum). This statue is also known as Pankuliya Buddha Statue. But unfortunately this area has been rather neglected recently and not visited by pilgrims.
In addition to this very fine statue Asokaramaya is surrounded by now ruined long columned buildings with beautiful guard stones and a pool. This is thought to be a nunnery and the original name of this site is not known.
This statue is said to belong to the 9-10th century and is made of dolomite. The eyes are hollow indicating that they have been studded with precious stones in the past. The statue is 6 feet 9 inches (2 meters) in height protected by a concrete structure with a roof rather destroying the real beauty of the statue.
This site can be accessed through the road leading to famous Gal Palama. You can ask directions from the villagers once you fall on to the road. The road leading to this temple ends at a paddy field. Form there you have to walk across the paddy field on a foot path to reach this site.

Special Note for the Viewers:
I’ve done this video to make other human beings aware of the beauty of this place and please don’t misuse this information in order to ruin this place. I’ve spent so much of time/money bringing this to you so that you may enjoy it. However I’ve a very kind and humble request from you all.
Should you ever visit this place, you’re kindly requested to adhere to the following in order to save our Mother Nature (essentially Our Country) not only for the future generations but for the current one as well:
* Avoid careless/reckless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in smaller groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring back if you have to take any with you.
* Don’t litter and even if it’ bio-degradable, please bring it back and dispose of the garbage properly and responsibly. Because no matter what it is, it will still be alien to that environment.
* Use reusable water bottles so that you don’t have to keep buying plastic ones. It’ll not only save you money but will help save nature massively.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Instead savor it.
* Try and bring if you spot any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. The increase usage of firewood leads to more deforestation even at a smaller scale.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or break any plants/branches unnecessarily.
* Don’t walk off the designated footpath.
* Don’t use soap/detergent/shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they’d only lead to the contamination of those pure water sources and elimination of wildlife species.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.

Kalutara is a resort town located approximately 40 km south of Colombo, Sri Lanka's commercial capital. In 2004, the Asian tsunami destroyed all the hotels and resorts in the Kalutara area. Till this day none have been rebuilt, except one: Kanilanka.
-
The 38-meter long Kalutara Bridge was built at the mouth of the Kalu Ganga River and serves as a major link between the country's western and southern border. At the southern end of the bridge lies the 3 stories-high Kalutara Vihara, a Buddhist temple built in the 1960s which holds the distinction of being the only stupa in the world that is hollow.
Also a famous historic temple built in 1873in Kalutara is the Asokaramaya Buddhist Temple situated in Kalutara north.
