Your Guide to Wanaka - New Zealand
Lake Wanaka lies in the heart of the Otago Lakes region and, at 300m above sea level, is New Zealand's fourth largest lake and the gateway to the West Coast glacier region and Mount Aspiring National Park.
A short drive away, lies Lake Hawea. Both resorts provide ample fishing and swimming opportunities, enjoying a temperate climate ideal for exploring. Walkers, in particular, will marvel at the awesome sight of the Southern Alps that provide an amazing backdrop to this area. At the lower end of Lake Wanaka, some of the various islands dotted about the waters are now ecological sanctuaries -- the flat land around this part making it easier to conserve.

In this vlog we check out Mt Aspiring National Park near Wanaka, New Zealand and take on some of the best short walks in the park. We go about half way up the Cascade Saddle Route, spent a night at Aspiring Hut and finally completed the Rob Roy Glacier Walk.

New Zealand: Wanaka and Mount Aspiring National Park
Absolutely breathtaking region of New Zealand: Wanaka area and Mount Aspiring National Park. The first hike is a endless switchback, steep climb to Isthmus Peak. The views, however, make the trek 100% worth it. This hike is similar to the VERY popular Rob Roy's Peak however with MUCH smaller crowds; recommended from a local at the Ground Up brewery (a MUST try in Wanaka... :-)). At the top we discovered a 360 view of peaks and lakes. Not many know about this Rob Roy's Peak equivalent so if views minus crowds is the goal, definitely explore this trail! The second hike is up Motueka Valley to Rob Roy's Glacier. To be completely frank, the valley was more inspiring than the glacier itself. Lush green backdrop to freshly snow-capped mountains? Yes please! Also, when visiting Wanaka, don't forget to try Rhyme and Reason Brewery!!! (this and Ground Up were our favorites of the area) .....missing NZ already.... Thanks for watching!!!!

City Description:
Wanaka, a resort town on New Zealand's South Island, is set on the southern end of its namesake lake with views of snowcapped mountains. It's the gateway to the Southern Alps' Mount Aspiring National Park, a wilderness of glaciers, beech forests and alpine lakes. Treble Cone and Cardrona ski resorts are near the park. Just outside the town is the outdoor maze and sculpture gallery of Puzzling World.
Weather and Events:
Wanaka is busiest in warm summer (Dec–Mar). Ski season at the nearby Southern Alps resorts runs Jun–Sep. Major annual events include the Challenge Wanaka triathlon (varies Jan/Feb), the Wanaka A&P Show (Mar), an agricultural fair. Rhythm and Alps (late Dec) is a New Year's Eve festival with concerts and camping in the Cardrona Valley.
