Asen's Fortress - a monument to Medieval Bulgaria
Atop a tall ridge in the Rhodope Mountains just 25 minutes away from Plovdiv lies Asen's Fortress - a stronghold that was in use from ancient times to the Ottoman invasion.
The fortress' last iteration was built during the 13th century during the reign of Ivan Asen II to be used as a line of defense against the Latin Empire. Today, the fortress lies in ruins, with a small church functioning within what remains of its walls.
The history of the site and the gorgeous scenery surrounding it are a huge draw for travellers.
Asen's Fortress (Asenova Krepost) - Асенова крепост от въздуха 2015
Asen's Fortress (Bulgarian: Asenova krepost), identified by some researchers as Petrich (Петрич), is a medieval fortress in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains, 2–3 km south of the town of Asenovgrad, on a high rocky ridge on the left bank of the Asenitsa River. Asen's Fortress is situated at an elevation of 279 m. The best preserved and most notable feature of Asen's Fortress is the Church of the Holy Mother of God from the 12th-13th century. It is a two-storey cross-domed single-naved building with a wide narthex and a large rectangular tower, and features mural paintings from the 14th century. The conservation and partial restoration works on the church were finished in 1991 (the whole fortress was left to decay after the Ottoman conquest in the 14th century and only the church remained standing in its original appearance as it was used by the local Christians) and now it is in regular use as a Bulgarian Orthodox church.

Bulgaria Trave Guide - Asen's Fortress
Take a tour of Asen's Fortress in Bulgaria -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Asen is a stone fortress that has stood strong for approximately 1000 years.
Its location, protruding out a 130 meter limestone cliff, hovering over the town of Asenovgrad provided this medieval fortress with optimum natural protection.
Its current name came from King Ivan Asen the Second's expansion and fortification of this structure in the 13th century.
Its high location provides any visitor with an unobstructed view of the surrounding mountains.
After the Ottoman take over in the 14th century, this now historic landmark was left to decay.
The most preserved aspect of the fortress is the church Saint Mary Petrichka, a cultural monument of great importance in Bulgaria.

Ovech Fortress, Provadia, Bulgaria (part I, drone footage)
Video provided by Christian Mitsov:
Ovech is a medieval fortress, located east of today's town of Provadia. It is situated on a plateau above the town, named Kaleto.
The fortress was built by the Byzantines and operated from the 4th century until the beginning of the 7th century, then almost a century is not active. Its rebirth began in the 11th century and ended at the end of the 17th century. However, Thracian presence was proven before the founding of the fortress. The greatest prosperity took place during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The Byzantines called the fortress Provaton, the Bulgarians Ovech and the Turks Tash Hissar (stone fortress). In the historical chronicles of the 12th century, the fortress is also referred to as the name of Burntha.
Today the fortress has left the fully renovated bridge facility between the fortress and the Tabia Plateau, some water wells, grain sheds, guard towers, the northern stone gate, the nobles' prisons, and the wounded citizens and prisoners of war, and the marble columns of Khan Omurtag.

The fortress,2-3 km south of the town Asenovgrad, takes place in the spectacular Rhodope mountains on the high rocky ridge Mogilata, closely to river Asenitsa. The construction dates back to IX century, however the fortress is first mentioned in XI century in the scripts of Bachkovo monastery. It is cited under the name fortified village Petrich. Surprisingly, the fortress can still be quoted under that name. It's current name is derived from Tsar Ivan Asen II, who during the XIII century began a strengthened constructional and reinforcing actions in the region. The ruler gave the name to the close town Asenovgrad, who is also known as Stanimaka.

Fortress Ovech - Provadia, Bulgaria
Drone Aerial Footage, Fortress Ovech - Bulgaria, 2017
Ovech Fortress is a stone stronghold located east of the town of Provadia, 53 km west of Varna and 410 km east of Sofia.
The fortress is mentioned under different names in the historical chronicles. The oldest one is the Byzantine name Provat. Bulgarians referred to it as Ovech, while Turks called it Tash hisar (which translates from Turkish as stone fortress). Archaeological research established that the fortress was used in periods from the 3rd century to the first decades of the 7th century, and then from the 10th-11th centuries until the end of the 17th century.
The fortress was inhabited successively by Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, and Turks. It is related to the reign of Tsar Ivaylo (1277 – 1280), the crusade of Amadeus IV, Count of Savoy (1366), and the crusade of Vladislav Varnenchik (1444).
The fortress has three entrances. The eastern access way has been preserved in its original form with stairs carved into the rock. It is convenient for visitors who have their own means of transportation.
The western entrance is accessible from the town through the original 111-step spiral staircase.
The northern entrance is the main entrance of the fortress. A 150 m-long bridge structure is built in front of it connecting the stronghold with the adjacent Tabiite Plateau
The golden years of Ovech were in the period 12th–14th century, when the fortress was a military, religious, economic, and administrative centre of the region.
When at the fortress visitors can also see the talking 79 m-deep well, the bishop’s church, the knight’s prison, the tower with the devil’s path, and the Friars’ holes.
The fortress is open all year round.
A guide assigned by the Museum of History of Provadia is available in the fortress.
