Astrakhan - gateway to the Caspian
Astrakhan is the administrative center of a region that is almost the size of Denmark. Home to more than a million people, the area is hoping for much-needed economic development after oil was recently discovered here.
Astrakhan
Astrakhan sits astride the Volga north of the Caspian Sea and is Russia’s face on that multinational body of water. The city reflects much of the region’s cultural and religious diversity. There are large communities of Kazakhs and Azeris, as well as Islamic Tatars. While many visitors use Astrakhan mainly as a jumping-off point for the Volga Delta, the city merits a day or two of exploration in its own right.
There’s a long, handsome riverfront that’s ideal for evening strolls as the sun sets across the river. The striking white kremlin, a symbol of Russian dominance since the 16th century, holds two beautiful churches and several museums. Across the canal, north of the kremlin, the stone mansions and churches of the European and Christian centre give way to Tatar and Persian sloboda (suburbs) with their wooden cottages, mosques and quaint courtyards, where garlands of drying vobla fish flutter in the breeze.

How did ISLAM Spread to RUSSIA? - KJ Vids
How did ISLAM Spread to RUSSIA? - KJ Vids
According to early Arab sources, Islam first entered the territory of modern Russia in the seventh century.
In 737 C.E. the Muslim army achieved a victory over the Khazar Kingdom, the strongest military power in the region.
The army was led by general Marwan, who later became Marwan II the last caliph of the Umayyad dynasty.
With the success of Marwan II, the Northern Caucasus, as well as the lower Volga region became a part of the Umayyad Empire.
The first autonomous Muslim region in Russia was the Bulghar Kingdom in the Middle Volga region.
The ruler of the Bulghar, Bin Salki Belekvar, requested the Abbasid caliph, al-Muqtadir, to dispatch Islamic scholars to teach Islam.
This autonomous state existed from the eighth century until its invasion by the Mongols in 1236 C.E.
The next wave of the spread of Islam in Russia took place during the Golden Horde province of the Chenghizid Empire.
Under the rule of Uzbek Khan (1312-42), Islam became the official religion of the entire kingdom ran by the Volga Bulghar.
The territories of Christian subjects, such as the Russians, Armenians, Circassians and Crimean Greeks paid the jizyah.
These vassal states were never forced into the Golden Horde and were able to preserve their religion under Muslim rule.
But the political status of Islam was due to be reversed drastically in the region by the mid-sixteenth century.
The newly-established mighty Russian state under the Ivan IV (the Terrible), invaded the Kazan and Astra khan states.
Over the next three centuries, Russia expanded into Muslim-inhabited lands of Siberia, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
In 1859, Muslims of Dagestan lost their country to Tsarist Russia after 34 years of resistance under Imam Shamil (1797-1871).
The Russian victory had a devastating impact on Caucasian Muslims. Thousands were deported to Siberia.
Hundreds of thousands more were forced to flee to the Ottoman Empire.
Russia’s conquest of Central Asia was completed in 1885. By the 20th century, Russia had over 14 million Muslims.
From then on, Muslims were faced with coercive Christianization and Russification, which was central to Moscow’s policy.
Unknown to many, Islam has a long history in Russia. Today there remains16-20 million Muslims in Russia.

Deepak Badhwar, in Karakul hat, talks to Muslim shopkeepers about Eid rituals
Deepak Badhwar speaks to camera, and explains the rituals of Bakri-Eid in Delhi, India.
He is wearing a Karakul hat!
A Karakul (or Qaraqul) hat (Urdu, Pashto, Persian: قراقلی; also known as a Jinnah Cap in Pakistan for its frequent use by the country's founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah) is a hat made from the fur of the Qaraqul breed of sheep, often from the fur of aborted lamb foetuses. The triangular hat is part of the costume of the native people of Kabul which has been worn by generations dating back in Afghanistan. The fur from which it is made is referred to as Astrakhan, broadtail, qaraqulcha, or Persian lamb. Qaraqul means Black fur in Turkic, similar types of hats are common among Turkic peoples. The hat is peaked, and folds flat when taken off of the wearer's head.
Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, was often seen wearing this cap - it subsequently came to be known as Jinnah cap.
Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan, is often seen wearing a Karakul hat
The qaraqul hat is typically worn by men in Central and South Asia. Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan, wears a qaraqul hat. The folding Qaraqul was worn by the former king of Afghanistan Amanullah Khan in 1919. Thereafter, every Afghan king or president has worn this hat. It is a traditional Kabuli costume.
