Russia moves against oil firm billionaire Yevtushenkov with share seizure
A Moscow court has seized the shares of an oil company mostly owned by Russian conglomerate Sistema.
Its boss, billionaire oligarch Vladimir Yevtushenkov, is under house arrest accused of money laundering during the acquisition of the oil firm - Bashneft - from local authorities in the Urals region seven years ago.

Young volunteers in Moscow campaign for Navalny
(12 Dec 2017) Muscovite teenagers Kirill Strizhov and Alexander Pelevin have never known a Russia without President Vladimir Putin.
Now, they say, the time has come for a younger leader.
While most of their classmates relax at home, the two dedicate their weekends canvassing for opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the lawyer turned anti-corruption campaigner who triggered mass protests this year when he released an investigation into the personal assets of former President Dmitry Medvedev.
Navalny is running for president in next year's elections, although it remains to be seen if authorities will allow it, due to a criminal conviction his supporters say was politically motivated that bars him from running.
Youth volunteers like Strizhov, 15, and Pelevin, 17, made up a large part of the crowds who marched in support of Navalny in cities ranging from Nizhny Novgorod to Vladivostok.
A lot of young people watch Navalny's YouTube channel, it's a new, informative platform for us teenagers, says Strizhov, who volunteered full-time following the Medvedev investigation.
He says that before he had been apolitical, but that Navalny explains complicated subjects in a way that we can understand.
The young activists are well informed about the economy, infrastructure problems in Russia's regions and the latest corruption cases, and say they want change.
All our money is falling into the pockets of officials and civil servants, Pelevin told the Associated Press. We need an actual future.
In today's Russia, there is a growing gulf between the Soviet-born older generation, dependent on state television and government propaganda for their information, and Russia's Western-looking, tech-savvy millennials.
This discrepancy is no more apparent than when the boys visit apartment blocks on the city outskirts, trying to get pensioners to engage with Navalny's anti-Putin message.
Pelevin's parents, Tatiana and Alexander, know all too well the risks that their son is taking in supporting the man who poses a very real, political threat to Putin.
In 2012 their older son was detained and fined for joining massive rallies in Moscow against Putin's rule, the largest protests during his tenure.
According to local news reports, Navalny campaign volunteers (and their families) in towns such as Vladimir and Kemerovo have been threatened, intimidated and fired from their jobs.
Last week, ultra-nationalists attacked his campaign headquarters in Chelyabinsk.
I do suffer sometimes but I support his choice says Tatiana, a painter.
Our children will only be able to live a normal life once this country becomes democratic and lawful.
Alexander, a geologist-turned-poet, and himself vocal supporter of Navalny, was surprised by how seriously his son takes his activism.
Straight after his studies, he goes out canvassing and doesn't return until nine or ten at night… he's exhausted!
Authorities are expected to decide in the coming weeks if they'll allow Navalny to register for the race, despite a 2013 embezzlement conviction supporters say was fabricated as a response to his political activity.
One of his campaign managers, Sergei Boiko, assumes he will not be barred.
Navalny has returned real, street politics to Russia, he said, noting that regardless of what happens, the highly-organised campaign has visibly inspired and mobilised thousands of young people.
The main question is what's next? said Pelevin.

You know what problem we have here? We also have the problem of small nations: I hope we will not forget anyone. We are unable to determine exactly how many, some say 160, some 169, some say 193.
Mr. President, I rely on the European experience. And I am referring to people who historically lived in the Russian Empire and in the Russian Federation not having their statehood outside Russia. These are our native and 'Russian' people.
Let's rely on our own experience, the European experience now is not the best. You've seen what is happening there. An immigrant raped a child in one European country. The court acquitted him on two grounds: he does not speak the language of the host country and did not understand that the boy, and it was a boy, objected. What they are doing cannot even be imagined. It is the result of corruption of traditional values and I do not even know how to explain it, a feeling of guilt towards these migrants? It is not even clear what is going on there. A society that cannot protect their children today, has no tomorrow, no future. Therefore, the experience they have is not the best. We have thousands of years of history of the formation of a multinational state. We have a much deeper experience. We also have a lot of problems, but the experience is much deeper than in many other countries.

Syria: Army sappers blow up IS ‘headquarters’ in Deir ez-Zor
Syrian Army sappers detonated a bomb in a tunnel that was dug under a building in the Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor, where hundreds of self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) fighters had reportedly gathered, Sunday.
SOT, National Defence Force leader (Arabic): This road, the only road that leads to the Deir ez-Zor city, has been equipped with car bombs. Therefore we dug a tunnel and blew it up under their headquarters. IS fighters are definitely unable to access the area now. They believed they could achieve progress in Deir ez-Zor after their arrival from Mosul, we will prevent them.
SOT, Syrian Army officer (Arabic): We observed lately a large movement of IS fighters especially those coming from Iraq after the Mosul battle. Also we witnessed the entry of vehicles and new elements from IS most of them with strange accents like Shishani.

Multiple Vehicle Fire with Exposure and Fuel Fire
Multiple vehicle fire with an exposure. We also had an ignited gasoline to contend with as a exposure problem. The fire was on top of a large hill and the fuel was running downhill towards another house. We had no foam available so we had to use hose streams to keep the fuel in check with an ABC extinguisher as a backup. Permission to use this video was given by the owner.

China’s Obsession with Mink Coats
When it comes to high fashion in China, there’s nothing quite as coveted as a mink coat. Everyday people save up for months to afford the plush, extravagant outerwear, flocking to malls by the busload every winter to get their hands on one.
VICE China took a deep dive inside the lucrative industry to find out why mink fur is so popular in the country, and to see how the coats get made—visiting the farms that harvest minks, the factories turning their fur into jackets, and the vendors selling them for thousands of dollars apiece.

April 11, 2012 Russia_Putin calls NATO a Cold War atavism, part of geopolitical reality
Adressing State Duma on Wednesday, Putin said the move to WTO membership will help to speed up the innovative development of the national economy. In particular, he pointed out that after joining the WTO, Russia should follow the example of those countries that did the same, not carelessly or to no avail, but managed to squeeze out the maximum benefits for their development.
In describing NATO, Vladimir Putin called it a vestige of the Cold War era, which sometimes pokes its nose into where it should not, but sometimes plays a stabilizing role.
On being asked to comment on the situation in Astrakhan where ex-candidate for Astrakhan mayor Oleg Shein of the Fair Russia party announced a hunger strike to protest against the outcome of the recent mayoral elections, Vladimir Putin said that Shein should appeal to court.
After that, the Fair Russia party's parliamentary faction, led by the party chief Sergey Mironov, left the State Duma in a sign of discontent with Putin's account of the situation in Astrakhan.
A State Duma deputy also asked Vladimir Putin about the possibility of removing the word consecutive from the provision of the constitution dealing with two presidential terms. Putin backed the idea.
The Great Day of Annihilation
Similarities Between Russian and Persian
In this language challenge episode, two Russian speakers, Alex and Bogdan, compete against two Persian speakers, Sara and Amir. There are some intriguing similarities between the two languages that may surprise a lot of people. Although one is a Slavic language and the other is Iranian, due to the historical interactions between them, Russian and Persian have adopted several words from one another. Russian is an East Slavic language and an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Russian is the most widely spoken of all Slavic languages, with a very significant number of speakers in Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, and to a lesser extent, the other post-Soviet states. Russian and Persian are both Indo-European languages, and Russian, being a Slavic language, is one of the four living members of the East Slavic languages. The Persian language, which at times is referred to by its endonym Farsi, is a Western Iranian language within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. It holds official status in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It is referred to as Dari in Afghanistan, and Tajik in Tajikistan. It is also widely spoken in other parts of the Central Asia, the Middle East, and South Asia. Among the neighbouring empires and nations, Persian was considered a prestigious cultural language and over the course of centuries it influenced many of these neighbouring languages, such as the Turkic languages in Central Asia, Caucasus, and Anatolia, neighboring Iranian languages, as well as Armenian, Georgian, and Indo-Aryan languages, especially Urdu. It also exerted some influence on Arabic, particularly the Bahrani and Iraqi dialects of Arabic. Persian was the first language in the Muslim world to break through Arabic's monopoly on writing, and the writing of poetry in Persian was established as a court tradition in many eastern courts. Persian and Russian have also influenced one another, not to the same extent as the aforementioned languages, but the influence and similarities are noteworthy. Historical contacts between Russia and Iran have consisted of collaboration and rivalry. Iranians and Russians have a very long history of geographic, economic, and socio-political interaction. The two countries also share a strong economic pact and have recently expanded on their historical ties. Ever since Iran has been placed under brutal sanctions by much of the Western world, Russia has become one of the only major powers in the world to continue its economic and military partnership with Iran. Iran and Russia are strategic allies and key trading partners. Iran is the only country in Western Asia that has been invited to join the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Russia's own international treaty organization in response to NATO. In addition to the Iranian embassy in Moscow, and the Russian embassy in Tehran, there is an Iranian consulate in the Russian cities of Kazan and Astrakhan, and Russian consulates in Iranian cities of Rasht and Isfahan.
