Olomouc - The Astronomical Clock show at the noon, Czechia - Czech Republic [4K] (videoturysta.eu)
[EN] In the very center of the Old Town of Olomouc you can find very interesting astronomical clock from the fifteenth century, rebuilt several times, situated on the northern side of the Town Hall. This clock springs into life at noon, so you can watch it and hear it.
The current appearance is the result of modifications from 1955, so the clock is made in the style of socialist realism, for example the figures that surround the clock face are depictions of workers.

[PL] W Ołomuńcu, w samym centrum Starego Miasta znajduje się bardzo interesujący zegar astronomiczny z XV wieku, kilkakrotnie przebudowywany, usytuowany po północnej stronie ratusza. Ten zegar ożywa w południe, można go wówczas podziwiać i słuchać jego dźwięków.
Obecny wygląd jest wynikiem modyfikacji z 1955 r., tak więc zegar jest wykonany w stylu socrealizmu, na przykład postacie otaczające tarczę zegarową są wizerunkami robotników.

Olomouc Astronomical Clock
There are two astronomical clocks in the Czech Republic: the famous one in Prague and the one on the town hall in the old Moravian university city of Olomouc.
The Olomouc clock performs at 12 Noon each day for about five minutes. Blacksmiths strike the hour on their anvils, and a dozen figures parade to three traditional songs played on a huge spring powered glockenspiel that has barely changed since the clock was built almost six hundred years ago.
The Olomouc astronomical clock was rebuilt several times through the centuries and its current appearance is from the early 1950s when the communists had come to government in Czechoslovakia.
The clock was damaged during WWII and during the reconstruction the saints, bishops, angels and other religious symbols were replaced by figures from the proletariat; ordinary working people like builders, mechanics, a chemist, a housewife and agricultural labourers.
In addition to telling the time Astronomical Clocks show the progress of the seasons, the position of the sun and the planets, the phase of the moon and which constellations are visible in the night sky at different times of the year.
The mechanics of the clock were most recently rebuilt in 1898. When the clock was first built in the Middle Ages, people believed the earth was flat and that the sun, moon and stars moved across it. Even though Copernicus came up with his heliocentric theory in the early 1500s it took until 1898 for it to be represented in Olomoucs astronomical clock.
Around the outside of the large lower dial are 365 names and the relevant one for each day of the year is indicated by the gold pointer. The best known worldwide is probably number 45 - St Valentines day, but every day of the year has its saint. Czechs celebrate their saints name day like a second birthday, and almost everybody has one of the 365 names on the calendar.
The red days spliced in between the saints name days are the old communist commemorations; Lenins death, Stalins birthday, International Labour Day and the October Revolution.
The performance of the clock is undeniably slow and overly long for modern tastes, but the cynics who stalk away to scoff are forgetting that its a 600 year old mechanical timepiece that was never designed to be watched like a television.
But, no matter how impatient the crowd are, the clock always has the last laugh.

Astronomical clock on Olomouc Town Hall
SEE MY HISTORY GROUP ON FACEBOOK :
The astronomical clock on the Olomouc town hall represents the first real effort at a 24-hour clock.
Following deliberate vandalism by Nazi troops in 1945, it was remade during the first years of communism in the style of social realism. Mosaics of workers and scientists and a dial that turns to display the International day of the worker and the birthdays of Lenin and Stalin can be seen.
The Olomouc clock shows the hour and minute of course, but also the day of the week, month, phase of the moon and a star map which revolves to indicate the visible part of the night sky. On the upper dial are the four seasons, and the twelve houses of the zodiac representing the twelve segments of the sky. Against this background revolve the earth and the other five planets known at the time.
It also shows saints days and days of communist holidays!
Olomouc is said to occupy a site of a Roman fort founded in the imperial period, the original name of which, Mons Julii, would have been gradually corrupted to the present form. Though this is just a legend, archaeological excavations revealed remains of a Roman military camp close to the city.
Olomouc became one of the most important settlements in Moravia in the Middle Ages. The city itself was founded in mid-thirteenth century and became one of the most important trade and power centres in the region. In the Middle Ages it was the biggest town in Moravia and competed with Brno for the position of the capital. Olomouc lost finally after the Swedes took the city for eight years (1642-1650).
The second half of the fifteenth century is what can be viewed as the start of Olomouc's golden age. However, during the Thirty Years' War, in 1640, Olomouc was occupied by the Swedes for eight years. They left the city in ruins and so it ceded its position to Brno. Olomouc was then fortified by Maria Theresa during the wars with Frederick the Great, who besieged the city unsuccessfully for seven weeks in 1758. In 1848 Olomouc was the scene of the emperor Ferdinand's abdication, and in 1850 an important conference between Austrian and German statesmen called Punctation of Olmütz took place here. At the conference German Confederation was restored and Prussia submitted its leadership to the Austrians.

The astronomical clock in Olomouc
The astronomical clock on the Olomouc town hall is one of only two in the country (the second well known one is in Prague). The Olomouc clock is quite unique because it was remodelled during the first years of communism in the style of social realism. When that regime fell at the end of the 1980's, most of the prominent statues and monuments were removed, but the clock in Olomouc survived and offers a rare view into the communist era with massive mosaics of workers and scientists. The Olomouc clock shows the hour and minute of course, but also the day of the week, month, phase of the moon and a star map which revolves to indicate the visible part of the night sky. You can also see your name at the day when you celebrate your name´s day. On the upper dial are the four seasons, and the twelve houses of the zodiac representing the twelve segments of the sky. At 12 noon every day, the clock marks the hour by playing special music, while the figures rotate, as you can see in this video - but it´s not quite complete. The whole performance takes about 5-6 minutes.

Brněnský orloj - Brno astronomical clock
is a black stone monument in Brno, Czech Republic. It is situated at Náměstí Svobody, the main square in the Brno City Centre. The monument was proposed by Oldřich Rujbr and Petr Kameník. Every day at 11:00 it releases a glass marble, which the spectators can catch from one of four openings in the monument and they can take it with them as a souvenir. Although the monument is publicly known as an astronomical clock (orloj), it is only a clock. Construction of the clock took three years, at a cost of approximately 12 million CZK.
