Lizzie Fitch/Ryan Trecartin - Astrup Fearnley Museet
Lizzie Fitch/Ryan Trecartin exhibition at Astrup Fearnley Museet in Oslo, Norway (23.02-20.05.2018) curated by Gunnar B. Kvaran and Therese Möllenhoff.
INTRODUCTION:
During the past decade Lizzie Fitch (b. 1981) and Ryan Trecartin (b. 1981), an American artist duo, have become widely known for their ground-breaking work, which addresses the changing nature of human conditions, narratives and language. Through references to modern American youth culture, corporate rhetoric and reality TV, they explore self-staging, and technology’s impact on identity, relations and evolution.
Fitch and Trecartin have been working together since 2001, and collaboration is a central theme in the artists’ practice: they involve a networked community of other artists, actors, friends and professionals in innovative collaborative projects that challenge traditional ideas of artistic production and authorship.
The artists are known for their large-scale installations that combine video, animation, performance, music, sculpture, costumes, makeup, and painting to form what they call a “sculptural theater.” This exhibition presents one such immersive experience in the work, Plaza Point (2009), which includes Trill-ogy Comp, part of the 7 movie project, Any Ever. The movies renounce conventional narrative structures in favor of complex, multi-linear fictions. The human and post-human characters present compelling visions of a frenzied and skewed world, which resonates deeply in today’s reality, where we are surrounded and manipulated by screens and by streams of digital imagery.
Sculpture has always played a prominent role in Fitch and Trecartin’s practice, both within and outside of screen media. This is the first comprehensive museum presentation focusing on their sculptural works from the period 2006–2015. The artists have transformed the museum into a unique sculpture garden featuring both individual figures and complex narrative groups. The eccentric and ambiguous characters, in both video and sculptural media, challenge established identity roles such as gender, ethnicity, age, sexuality and family relations, and convey a vision of a fragmentary, commercialized world caught in a process of continuous technological development.
