Most beautiful places for stargazing-Atacama Desert, Chile by spacerip
A picturesque oasis village - turned tourist hot spot - San Pedro de Atacama, located in northern Chile, is one of the best places in the world for stargazing. The Atacama Desert's crystal-clear skies and dry climate allows observers to view celestial wonders that are impossible to see in other parts of the world. Few will forget the sight of some of the astronomical treasures of the southern hemisphere, such as the 'Southern Cross', which includes a cluster of sparkling young stars aptly named the 'Jewel Box' ef tours.
SPACE offers 'star tours' which are ideal for the amateur astronomer. The tour begins with a guide to the constellations of the southern hemisphere, visible to the naked eye; on a good night the entire zodiacal arc is able to be seen. The second part of the tour takes place in a large park of telescopes, where you can observe the moon (and even photograph it through the telescope), Mars and Saturn as well as a multitude of breathtaking nebulae
Chile's Atacama Desert: Explore San Pedro de Atacama
Few places are as inhospitable or extreme as Chile’s Atacama Desert.
As the driest non-polar region in the world, less than 4mm of rain falls here each year.
Over 100,000km2 of torrid and barren land, which ripples and swells in places like a geographical accordion.
This is Mother Nature at her harshest.
But, even here, in the depths of the Atacama where life seems unwelcome, culture has thrived for thousands of years.
Once conquered by the Incan Empire, the Atacama Desert is revered by many as the spiritual heart of the country.
In remote regions of this arid expanse, indigenous communities still host ritualistic ceremonies of gratitude to Pachamama – the Earth Goddess.
Will she permit life to inhabit the Atacama Desert for centuries to come? Forging a legacy against the odds?
In towns like San Pedro de Atacama, which could be mistaken for a mirage, travelers gather to explore the region’s natural beauty and to indulge in local culture.
Here, white-washed buildings line cobbled streets, offering a welcomed refuge from the hot, dusty desert beyond. Welcoming locals are more than happy to share their oasis with inquisitive visitors.
Traditional melodies emanate from the town’s open windows, as artisan craftspeople ply their historic trades.
The town’s streets are abuzz with the exchange of the Atacama Desert’s stories – stories of mystery and of myth.
What do you hear from her enchanting call?

The Atacama desert is home to the darkest and cleanest skies in the world. A view to the nightsky rewards with uncountable numbers of stars and fantastic nebulas in one of the most quiet a empty places on earth. Not a single noise distracts from the grand show the nightsky has to offer.
The environment is harsh though. Filmed in freezing temperatures, altitudes up to 5000m/16000ft, salt lakes and icy slopes, the Atacama is not friendly to life and equipment. Though it provides without doubt for epic and vast vistas of one of the greatest landscapes on earth.

BBC Fast Track - Stargazing in the Atacama Desert
With high altitude plateaus, clear skies and low humidity, Chile is becoming a popular destination with the international scientific community and is home to many of the world’s most powerful observatories.
High up In the Atacama Desert, 5,000m (16,400ft) above sea level is one of the world's largest astronomical projects - the Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimetre Array (Alma).
The project uses radio telescopes to pick up wavelengths of light that are invisible to the human eye and may help reveal the origins of the Universe.

Atacama Desert has Chilean astronomers seeing stars
Chile leads the world when it comes to space exploration and hosts some of the world’s largest instruments for observation of outer space. Correspondent Harris Whitbeck takes us to the Atacama Desert to behold the mysteries of the Milky Way from the driest desert on earth.
Large telescopes dot the Atacama Desert in the northern part of Chile and offer the ideal conditions to study space from Earth. The high altitude combined with a lack of moisture and light pollution provide a near-perfect view of the night sky.
Chile is working on another piece of equipment to look skyward as well. Construction has started on the extremely large telescope or E-L-T. Its diameter is a whopping 39 meters, which is nearly five times the size of the four telescopes currently being operated at the Paranal Observatory.
Check out Harris Whitbeck’s report from this rugged terrain on the Pacific coast and see how Chile is becoming the global superpower of space exploration.

Atacama Desert, Chile: Unique Moon and Death Valleys
The Atacama Desert is the highest and driest in the world and our trip began in San Pedro, an oasis town, situated at 2,436 meters/7,992 feet. Everything that we saw and did during six very long days, and much that we didn't do (sand boarding for example) is offered by 70 tour operators in San Pedro!
Moon and Death Valleys is one the closest excursions to San Pedro. Our original flight from Santiago to Calama was cancelled and we arrived five hours later than the itinerary called for. Dropped suitcases and rushed out to the valleys with guide Alex. I don't think it's necessary to explain the names of these places but the correct name of Death Valley was Mars Valley but a non-speaking person interpreted Marte Valley as Morte Valley and it has been called Death Valley ever since.

Driest Place on Earth | San Pedro de Atacama CHILE | Valle de la Luna & World's Best Stargazing
After crossing the border from the Salt Flats of Bolivia, I made it to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile! Just outside of town lies Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) which is a salty mountain range that closely resembles the surface of the actual moon. After trekking through the Cuevas de Sal Cañon (salt caves), the race was on to catch the sunset at the viewpoint overlooking the valley. It was truly spectacular!
San Pedro de Atacama is an incredibly cute and quaint town (with tons of adorable street dogs) and is one of the best places in the world for stargazing since there is such low light pollution and an incredibly low amount of rain. I could LITERALLY see Saturn & Jupiter with my eyes!

Atacama Desert, Chile: Luxurious ****Terrantai Lodge San Pedro de Atacama
San Pedro de Atacama has accommodation for every price point: camping, hostels galore, 4 and 5-star hotels Including some that run $1,000 US per person per day, or rent a hammock. I debated long and hard about where to stay before choosing Terrantai Lodge right off the main street in San Pedro and was thrilled with this choice.
Four-star Terrantai Lodge is constructed with natural stones, has a very congenial staff, delicious buffet breakfast (including yumm-o Quinoa cookies - it took me a while to learn how to pronounce Quinoa - Kee-No-Wah or Keen-Wah) and mucho strong Pisco Sours. Great wi-fi and Terrantai Lodge gives each guest a goodie bag on check-in which includes a refillable water bottle to use at their cold water dispenser and, most important, prompt wake-up calls. When an excursion begins at 4:30a, guests do not need a hotel that forgets their wake-up call.
Terrantai Lodge was happily perfect in every way...
