Atami, in Shizuoka prefecture, is one of Japan's leading hot spring resorts and is only 45 minutes from Tokyo. The city, which has been a resort for hundreds of years, has seen hard times. Tourism was down from the 1990s to 2011. However, in recent years it has been showing miraculous recovery, and the city is regaining its vibrancy. On Journeys in Japan, American actor Charles Glover gets a sense of Atami through its enterprising residents-some running veteran establishments and others turning to innovation to secure their future. He experiences, and shares, why Atami continues to delight visitors.

Shirahama, located in Wakayama Prefecture, is known for its onsen (hot spring) resorts. Being one of the top three onsen resorts in Japan (the other two being Beppu in Oita and Atami on the Izu Peninsula), Shirahama’s visitors are in for a treat.
Shirahama literally translating to “white sand” is a coastal city. With various onsen (hot spring) related hotels and ryokan (traditional Japanese inns) dotted the coastline, visitors can enjoy both the bath and the beach.
Shirahama has a deep onsen history with many emperors and feudal lords visiting this area for its onsen. Therefore, it is no surprise Tokugawa Yoshimune, the ruler of the Kii Region, who later became the eighth Tokugawa Shogun visited Saki-no-Yu. It is said this onsen located right along the coastline is the oldest onsen in Japan. Being outdoors, visitors have able to look into the deep blue Pacific Ocean while bathing. The baths are gender separated. A wooden wall separates the gender and rock boulders protect the bather from the waves of the ocean. However, at times, the bather may still feel the spray from the ocean wave as it crashed on the boulders.

Yufuin visitors may wish to pop into Musoen, a popular ryokan (inn) located in Yufuin, Oita Prefecture, for a refreshing bath. The ryokan’s outdoor onsen (hot springs) boasts the best view of Mount Yufu.
Musoen has 31 Japanese style guestrooms and 3 Japanese-Western type rooms. The baths are gender separated. In addition to the outdoors bath, this ryokan has indoor baths and private, family outdoors and indoors onsen.
Overnight guests at Musoen can enjoy the superb dinner and breakfast included the overnight stay price. Food served at the ryokan is pleasing both to the eyes and the stomach. The food is cut and shaped in a creative and aesthetic style. Being in tune with the seasons, guests may find a seasonal leaf or flower (like a dandelion in the spring) served alongside their meal.

This castle is in Atami, a famous onsen town. The flag is actually a small picture of a hot water tub. There is lots of things to do here, and I did many of these things on christmas day.

A popular ryokan (inn) located within Yufuin, a hot spring resort in Oita Prefecture, is Baien. The ryokan has both Japanese style tatami rooms as well as Western bed-based guest rooms.
The large, outdoors hot springs baths are quite beautiful (gender separated). On clear days, bathers are able to view Mount Yufu while they are relaxing in Baien’s warm waters. And the baths are not limited to Baien’s overnight guests. Visitors not staying at Baien may experience the beautiful baths during the day for a nominal fee.
Baien also has a large Japanese traditional garden which may be fun to explore. The garden is 10,000 tsubo in size (1 tsubo is 3.3 ㎡). There are different flowers according to the season, making walking through the garden a great, beautiful exercise.
And the food served at the ryokan is pleasing both to the eyes and the stomach. Food prepared at a ryokan is cut and shaped in a creative and aesthetic style. Being in tune with the seasons, guests may find a seasonal leaf or flower (like a dandelion in the spring) served alongside their meal.

A ryokan (旅館) is a type of traditional Japanese inn that has existed since the eighth century A.D. during the Keiun period, in which the oldest hotel in the world, Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan, was created in 705 A.D. Another old ryokan called Hōshi Ryokan was founded in 718 A.D and was also known as the world's second oldest hotel. Such inns also served travelers along Japan's highways. They typically feature tatami-matted rooms, communal baths, and other public areas where visitors may wear yukata and talk with the owner

I chose this Ryokan because despite the low price $50 it has a cute ♨️ Outdoor SPA Onsen that you can enjoy just yourself and also has another hot spring with rock walls indoors! And their waters felt the most smoothing to my skin in entire Beppu this time! The room was also cute with a ????Sakura Cherry Blossom carpet and WiFi and a hot spring heater that works and anything you would expect from such traditional Japanese rooms. There is no food offered but Seven Eleven is just 6-7 minutes walk away (I didn't know and was totally starving all morning with no coffee). Located right in Kannawa center you can reach all attractions on foot and also can try for free all various historical public spas! Owner speaks English too????

Reportage Japon : les Onsen, la culture du bain public japonais (nus en simplicité)
Bienvenue dans la ville de #Beppu, réputée pour ses #onsen ! Les onsen, ce sont les sources thermales japonaises. L'eau est issue de sources volcaniques et est chargée en minéraux remplis de bienfaits naturels pour le corps et l'esprit.
Il y a une véritable culture du onsen au Japon. Dans ce documentaire, nous allons à la rencontre de plusieurs personnes qui vont nous expliquer ce que cela représente pour eux, afin de mieux comprendre pourquoi ils sont si précieux à leurs yeux.
Attention à ne pas confondre les onsen avec les sento :
Les onsen, ce sont les sources thermales naturelles. L'eau est à plus de 25 degrés et peut être amenée jusque dans des bains en intérieur, mais les onsen sont majoritairement en extérieur. Il est courant que des ryokans (auberges traditionnelles) soient construits à proximité pour les exploiter.
Le sento, c'est le bain public de quartier. Popularisé à l'époque où les foyers n'avaient pas de salle de bain, les Japonais ont gardé l'habitude de se laver au bain public régulièrement. L'eau des sento est de l'eau simplement chauffée sur place. C'est un espace de socialisation dont la fonction première est l'hygiène du corps.
Au #Japon il est très courant de se laver dans les bains publics. Après une dure journée de travail, pour se détendre, seul(e), entre ami(e)s ou en famille. Il n'y a pas d'heure ou d'occasion spéciale pour aller au onsen ! C'est ainsi que les Japonais se baignent et se prélassent très régulièrement depuis des siècles.
