Atatürk’s (House) Pavilion:
The Trabzon Museum (Turkish: Trabzon Müzesi), also known as Kostaki Mansion (Kostaki Konağı), is a historic house museum with archeological and ethnographic exhibitions located in Trabzon, Turkey. The mansion was built in the beginning of the 1900s as a private residence for Kostaki Teophylaktos, a notable banker of Greek origin. It is known that the architect was of Italian origin and many materials used in the building were brought from Italy. However, the name of the architect is unknown.
As Teophylaktos went bankrupt in 1917, all his properties were confiscated, among them his mansion. The building was acquired by the Nemlioğlu family.
During the timespan of Turkish War of Independence (1919–1923), the mansion was used as the headquarters for the military in the region. In 1924, it was prepared for the first visit of Mustafa Kemal, the founder of the Turkish Republic, to Trabzon. Between September 15–17, he and the First Lady Latife stayed in the mansion.
In 1927, the building was nationalized by the Governor of Trabzon Ali Galip Bey, and served until 1931 as the Governor's House. Between 1931-1937, it was used as the inspector's office.
The Kostaki Mansion was assigned in 1937 to the Ministry of National Education, and was used for fifty years long as a vocational high school for girls. Finally, in 1987, the building was handed over to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to be transformed into a museum. The building, one of the outstanding examples of the civil architecture in Turkey, was restored between 1988-2001. On April 22, 2001, it was opened to public as the Trabzon Museum. A total of 3,651 items are found in the museum's inventory.
The building is on three levels in addition to a basement. The basement comprises archeological works, while the first floor is the section for ethnographic collections. On the ground floor, items belonging to the architecture and history of the mansion are exhibited. The attic is reserved for the administration.

The 5th Century Citadel of Erzurum, Turkey
This ancient citadel has been inhabited by the Urartians, Romans, Byzantine Empire and Sassanions (whoever they are -- any relation to Vidal Sassoon?) Oh yes. And then the Turks from the 11th century on.
The original citadel/castle had inner and outer citadels with huge walls circling the entire expanse. Travels With Sheila roamed the grounds, visiting the small masjid (prayer hall) built for soldiers, different layers of strata - some with human bones sticking out (possibly from the Turkey/Armenian clash) and soaked up the ambiance. Time to move on East...

(TURKEY 2018) - ERZURUM + Palandöken / eastern Anatolia
Erzurum is a city in eastern Anatolia (Asian Turkey) close to the Armenian border, at 1900m in the middle of the mountains. It's a 2hours flight from/to Istanbul.
- HISTORICAL RELEVANCE:
First belonged to Armenians, Arabs, Romans, Greeks, Seljuk Turks, Mongols, Turkmen, Persians and finally Ottoman Turks. During the Ottoman Empire reign (1500) the city served as the main base of Ottoman military power in the region. Ottomans have fought to defend it from Persians and Russian for over 300 years.
In 1919, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, one of the key founders of the modern Turkish Republic, resigned from the Ottoman Army in Erzurum and was declared an Honorary Native and freeman of the city, with the first citizenship registration and certificate (Nüfus Cuzdanı) of the new Turkish Republic.
The Erzurum Congress of 1919 was one of the starting points of the Turkish War of Independence.
- WHAT TO SEE:
Little of medieval Erzurum survives beyond scattered individual buildings such as the citadel fortress and the 13th century Çifte Minareli Medrese (the Twin Minaret madrasa), today symbol of the city. If you want to enter a mosque, I suggest you the Ulu Camii. It's quite big and right next to the Çifte Minareli.
If you want to eat a specialty, you can't miss to try the Cağ Kebap or to go to Erzurum Evleri, a restaurant in a prototype of the old houses. It's incredibly big when you visit inside and it seems to eat in a museum!
- MOUNTAIN/SKIING STUFF - PALANDÖKEN:
First of all I give you an advice: dress a loooooot! the winter in Erzurum reaches easily -20°C!
Erzurum is famous for having some diverse winter sports facilities and hosted the 2011 Winter Universiade. Only 6 km to the south of the city center there's the Ejder3200 World Ski Center, on the Palandöken Mountain. If you love skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, mountaineering or just breathing some fresh (iced) air and if you wanna stay far from the most touristy destinations, you should definitely come to Erzurum and go visiting Palandöken: this ski resort has tracks among the longest and steepest in the world and it’s becoming an attraction of world winter tourism!

Ayasofya Museum, Trabzon, Turkey
Hagia Sophia, also known as Ayasofya Museum, is a monastery church and the most important historical sight in Trabzon. Believed to be built during the reign of Manuel I (1238-1263), this church became a mosque, military depot, hospital, mosque again in 1880 and finally turned into a museum in 1964.
A very impressive building with a frieze on the south side depicting the creation of Adam and Eve, the Garden of Eden, picking the forbidden fruit, expulsion, and Cain slewing Abel. Just the first of today's sights that would be filled with important monasteries in Eastern Turkey.

Hagia Sophia-Ayasofya Camii:
Hagia Sophia is a museum, formerly Greek Orthodox church which was converted into a mosque in 1584, and located in Trabzon, in the north-eastern part of Turkey. It dates back to the thirteenth century when Trabzon was the capital of the Empire of Trebizond. It is located near the seashore and two miles west of the medieval town's limits. It is one of a few dozen Byzantine sites still extant in the area. It has been described as being regarded as one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture.
Hagia Sophia was built in Trebizond during the reign of Manuel I between 1238 and 1263. The oldest graffiti carved in the apses of the church contain the dates 1291 and 1293. After Mehmed II conquered the city in 1461, the church was possibly converted into a mosque and its frescos covered in whitewash. Other scholars suggest it was not converted until 1584, being spared the initial transformation because it stood several kilometers outside the city walls. The monastery next door continued to be used by monks as late as 1701, when Tournefort found them still in residence. It is likely that the monks gradually abandoned a building that failed to protect them from harassment and predation, and the Turks assumed its use without needing to expel them.
In 2012, the religious authorities (Diyanet) filed a lawsuit against the ministry of culture, claiming the ministry had been 'illegally occupying' the church for some decades. The Diyanet won the case, getting ownership of the building. On 5 July 2013, the former church was partially converted for a while into a mosque according to the local Vakif Direction of Trabzon, which is the owner of the estate. The reconstruction works have already been started. Some frescoes were veiled and the floor covered by a carpet. The mufti of the Turkish province Trabzon said that “the works for opening the Hagia Sophia mosque in the city to practice prayers again are going on,” and that “during the prayer the mural paintings will be covered by curtains. The local union of architects from Trabzon filed a lawsuit against the ministry of religious affairs' conversion plan. A local judge ruled the transformation of the former church to be illegal, and ordered it to be maintained as a museum.Wikipedia

WESTERN BLACKSEA REGION - TURKEY
The Black Sea Region
Lush and green throughout the year, rocky mountains, the cool waters of the coast and plantations of tea, hazelnuts, tobacco and corn, the Black Sea is a unique part of the country. The main industry is farming, thanks mainly to the high rainfall, andin the summer the roadsides are lined with hazelnuts drying in the sun. The culture, cuisine, climate and even dialect is different to the rest of Turkey, and the coastal road stretches from east of Istanbul to the border with Georgia.
The cities in this region are Amasya, Artvin, Bolu, Corum, Duzce, Giresun, Gumushane, Kastamonu, Ordu, Rize, Samsun, Sinop, Tokat, Trabzon Zonguldak, Bartin and Karabuk. Akcakoca is on the far western side of the coast, with endless hazelnutorchards. Inland to the east is Safranbolu, with a wonderful collection of old Ottoman houses, and Devek, famous for its intricately carved walking canes.Further along the coast are Inkum, Amasra and Cakraz, and then Sinop which has been a port for 1000 years and is still one of the biggest in the Black Sea. The town takes its name from the Amazon queen Sinope and local mythology suggests that femalewarriors, called Amazons, lived in this region. It is now an important industrial and commercial centre.Unye and Fatsa, east of Samsun, are popular holiday resorts with natural scenic beauty, beaches, accommodation, campsites and restaurants.
Ordu is a charming city with hazelnut orchards stretching out for miles in all directions and 46km east isGiresun, with its castle perched on a steep rocky slope, crowning the city and overlooking the beach. This is where the Roman general Lucullus saw cherries for the first time, and liked them so much he introduced them into Europe.Trabzon is another important commercial port on the Black Sea, and it connects with ports in other Black Sea countries. Trabzon Castle was founded on an area shaped like a table, and the architecture that developed around the castle reflects Byzantine,Commagene and Ottoman styles. The city's most important building is the Ayasofya Museum, the interior of which is decorated with frescoes, and the exterior with reliefs. From Boztepe Park and the Ataturk Museum there are stunning panoramic views ofthe city.
Inside the Altindere National Park near Macka, the Sumela Monastery is perched on high cliffs overlooking the Altindere valley, and was founded in the 14th century by Alexius III. Inside the monastery is a church, a library, various other rooms and asacred spring. The area around Rize is the wettest in the country with wonderful shades of green, and is the centre of Turkey's tea production with plantations on the high terraces. Hopa is the last Turkish port before reaching the Georgian border, and to the southis Artvin. The city was established on the terraced hills overlooking the Coruh River, which is well known for rafting, and within the province are old Georgian houses and churches.
