Rizal in Madrid, Spain 9/12/2014
Madrid, Spain
12 September 2014
This shows the difference places associated with Dr. Jose Rizal while in Madrid.
a. Congreso de los Diputados (formerly Las Cortes Españolas)
The Filipino community lobbied in this building for the recognition of the Filipinos’ right to autonomy and for equal rights with Spanish citizens.
b. Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Madrid, C/. Atocha (where Rizal studied)
It was here where Rizal studied medicine. He began his medical studies on October 2, 1882 and finished it two years later in June 1884. After some time, Rizal decided to go to Paris to specialize in ophthalmology to cure her mother’s eyes.
c. Calle Amor de Dios 13-15
The place of Rizal’sresidence from September 12, 1882 to May 1883 when he first arrived in Madrid. He lived here with Vicente Gonzalez, an old friend from his Ateneo de Manila days. The house could have been chosen out of convenience since it was near the university and the atelier in which Rizal’s interest in the arts developed into fine form. He could therefore save on transportation costs.
d. Calle Ventura de la Vega (formerly C/. Baño 15, piso principal or 1º)
This was the residence of D. Pablo Ortiga y Rey, vice president of the Consejo de Filipinas and the headquarters of Circulo Hispano Filipino. In a letter to this family dated October 10, 1882, Rizal mentioned having boarded here from 1883 (autumn) to August 1884, apparently on a temporary basis since the following entries would indicate that he had other places of residence in Madrid.
e. Viva Madrid (C/. Manuel Fernandez y Gonzalez, 7)
A hangout area famous for its beautiful murals of azulejos or glazed tiles where Rizal used to take his light meals with wine. A marker proudly exhibited in the establishment mentions its association with the Filipino community in Madrid at that time. This place would tell us that it was not “all work and no play” for our national hero.
f. Hotel Inglés (C/. Echegaray)
It is a place where the Filipino community in Madrid marked or celebrated its most important events. In 1884, this was the venue for the banquet in honor of Luna and Hidalgo. The place retains its 19th century ambience and has at the lobby a marker indicating the year of its construction, the representative menu then, and the events celebrated there such as zarzuelas, musical presentations and plays.

Sola me quedo.
Cada cual quiere ser cada una:
No voy a ser menos:
¡Madrid, uno, libre, redondo,
Autónomo, entero!
Mire el sujeto
Las vueltas que da el mundo
Para estarse quieto.
Yo tengo mi cuerpo:
Un triángulo roto en el mapa
Por ley o decreto
Entre Ávila y Guadalajara,
Segovia y Toledo:
Provincia de toda provincia,
Flor del desierto.
Somosierra me guarda del Norte y
Guadarrama con Gredos;
Jarama y Henares al Tajo
Se llevan el resto.
Y a costa de esto,
Yo soy el Ente Autónomo último,
El puro y sincero.
Viva mi dueño,
Que, sólo por ser algo,
Soy madrileño!
Y en medio del medio:
Capital de la esencia y potencia,
Garajes, museos,
Estadios, semáforos, bancos,
Y vivan los muertos:
¡Madrid, Metrópoli, ideal
Del Dios del Progreso!
Lo que pasa por ahí, todo pasa
En mí, y por eso
Funcionarios en mí y proletarios
Y números, almas y masas
Caen por su peso;
Y yo soy todos y nadie,
Político ensueño.
Y ése es mi anhelo,
Que por algo se dice:
De Madrid, al cielo.

Polytechnic University of the Philippines - Pylon Run 2018
Today, marks the celebration of the 114th founding anniversary of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines with the theme of GREAT THINGS ARE DONE AS WE STRIVE TOGETHER.
One of the highlights of the annual founding celebration, is the most anticipated event for the students which is the traditional Pylon Run by Alpha Phi Omega fraternity with this year's theme, Kapatiran at Bayan.
Alpha Phi Omega fraternity uses this opportunity to raise awareness and calls for attention to their advocacy of various social issues today like Blind Allegiance, Upholding Media Neutrality, Responsible Fraternity Initiation, Human Rights for All and lastly, High Quality Public Service.
Meron kaming mga issues na niraraise as a part of una, studentry, atsaka yung pangalawa as a part of the community. Ayun yung gusto namin na may link between the fraternity and the nation. Blind allegiance, alisin natin yan. Pangalawa I uphold ang media neutrality. Yung pangatlo naming niraraise na issue dito eh human rights for all, hindi namimili. Yung pang last, public service.
Let's us not forget the essence of the traditional Pylon Run, as iskolars ng bayan let's engage and take part in the social issues that our society are facing.
Happy 114th Founding Anniversary PUP!

'Memories', an excerpt from the Full Version of 'The 4 Pillars of Friendship'
“Memories” is that segment of the Ateneo de Naga HS Class ’69 reunion song “The Four Pillars of Friendship” that endeavors to reminisce about the people, places, experiences, and events that formed part of the batch’s high school days.
With an original melody different from the main song (the Short Version), it is embedded in the Full Version of the “Four Pillars…” song and runs for about 4 minutes. For this You Tube , however, we have trimmed the Full version to feature mainly ‘Memories’.
In the CD sleeve notes which our classmate Dino Madrid penned, he wrote: ‘’Memories’ reverberates as it resonates with reminiscences of the main people and faces and events that have, sublimely, affected and influenced those young days at the Ateneo, a rich and riveting plethora of names and slew of scenes [Jesuit mentors, teachers and counselors; and, class nights, lantern parades and educational and sports conferences and tournaments, etc.] that epitomize the census and crucible of high school years. It, masterfully, memes out and resuscitates images and persons, steadily and at random, in the deliberate delivery of a robust, ragged and rolling Reggae style beat.”
(To our HS 69 classmates: the DVD titled ‘Enduring Friendship’, part of the 2-disc set released during the launching in October, 2015 of the ‘Four Pillars..’ CD, is still the more complete and much better video in terms of content depicting those years. A few copies of the DVD are still available with us. Please avail of your FREE copy.)
