Day 26 - Athabasca Falls, Jasper National Park (4K)
CANADA Bound - Day 26 sees us take a cruise down to Athabasca Falls. We took the old road Hwy23A instead of the main Icefields Parkway and enjoyed some beautiful scenery capturing some rafters going down the Athabasca River.

We stopped at the Athabasca falls....what a treat, The falls on one side and old watercourses on the other. A must see!!

Athabasca Falls is a waterfall in Jasper National Park on the upper Athabasca River, 30 kilometres south of the townsite of Jasper, Alberta, Canada. A powerful, picturesque waterfall, Athabasca Falls is not known so much for the height of the falls, as it is known for its force due to the large quantity of water falling into the gorge. Even on a cold morning in the fall, when river levels tend to be at their lowest, copious amounts of water flow over the falls. The river falls over a layer of hard quartzite and through the softer limestone below carving the short gorge and a number of potholes. The falls can be safely viewed from various viewing platforms and walking trails around the falls.

A Class 5 waterfall, Athabasca Falls has a drop of 80FT (24M) and a width of 60FT (18M). Jasper National Park's Athabasca Falls are not considered the highest or widest waterfalls in the Canadian Rockies, but are considered the most powerful.

In this episode we start in northern Banff National Park at Peyto lake and make our way further north up the icefields parkway into Jasper National Park. We see some epic wildlife and waterfalls along the way!

Long Exposure Photography at a Frozen Athabasca Falls
In Jasper National Park along the Icefields Parkway is Athabasca Falls. This waterfall roars like thunder in the summertime, but it's amazing just how much freezes over in the winter. With still some beautiful blue water running through the dark canyon, I decided to go with some long exposure shots here.

Il s'agit d'un site très fréquenté. Les chutes sont facilement accessibles. La majorité des sentiers sont pavés.
Les chutes Athabasca ne mesurent que 23 m de hauteur, mais elles font partie des cascades les plus puissantes des Rocheuses canadiennes.
Nous avons tout d'abord marché dans le sentier qui longe la rivière Athabasca. On peut déjà observer le fort débit d'eau de cette rivière.
Le sentier nous amène vers différents points de vue. Celui situé directement en face de la cascade nous permet de ressentir toute la puissance dégagée lorsqu'elle se déverse dans le canyon.
.
Au fil du temps, l'érosion a creusé la pierre et a formé un canyon et d'immenses cuvettes dans lesquelles nous pouvons observer l'eau tourbillonner.
La majorité des gens observent la cascade, prennent quelques photos et repartent. Ils ratent la plus belle portion du sentier.
En fait, lorsque l'on poursuit notre randonnée, le sentier passe en-dessous de la route principale et nous amène dans un lieu exceptionnel.
Le sentier mène directement à un canal forgé par l'eau il y a fort longtemps. La promenade se poursuit donc directement dans cet étroit canyon. Des escaliers ont même été érigés afin de faciliter le déplacement.
Au bout de ce sentier, nous avons une superbe vue de la rivière Athabasca.
