Jasper National Park: Athabasca Glacier
The Athabasca Glacier is one of the six principal 'toes' of the Columbia Icefield, located in the Canadian Rockies. The glacier currently recedes at a rate of about 5 metres (16 ft) per year and has receded more than 1.5 km (0.93 mi) and lost over half of its volume in the past 125 years. Easily accessible, it is the most visited glacier in North America. The leading edge of the glacier is within easy walking distance; however, travel onto the glacier is not recommended unless properly equipped. Hidden crevasses have led to the deaths of unprepared tourists.
The Icefield Interpretive Centre, closed during the winter (mid-October to mid-April), stands across from the glacier. It is used as a lodge and for ticket sales for sightseeing on the glacier. Standard buses transport tourists to the glacier edge, where they board specially designed snow coaches for transport over the steep grades, snow and ice part way up the glacier.
The glacier is approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) long, covers an area of 6 km2 (2.3 sq mi), and is measured to be between 90–300 metres (300–980 ft) thick.

Canadian Rockies: the Columbia Icefield and the Athabasca Glacier!
Author/speaker and longtime group travel host Charlie Adams shows you what it is like to get in one of the massive Brewster Ice Explorers (the tires are $5000 each) for excursion onto the surface of the Athabasca Glacier, where one wrong step and you could plunge into a crevass where you would freeze to death before rescue workers could get to you.
Since 2006 Charlie has hosted group travel trips for Edgerton's Travel, where he shares inspirational stories and humor along the way. He also produces a 60 minute DVD documentary for travelers. Here on youtube, he shares short clips from the documentaries. For more information on all of Edgerton's group trips, and for information on Charlie's motivational presentations you can go to

Today we boarded a bus for a long but AMAZING and FANTASTIC adventure from Banff to the Athabasca Glacier near the Columbia Icefields following the Icefields Parkway. Along the way we see Peyto Lake, Bow Lake which feeds Bow River where we went rafting yesterday and several glaciers amongst the beautiful scenery. While there were forest fires outside of Banff, I'm thankful that we made a window of opportunity to see these amazingly beautiful, breathtaking, spectacular sights.

The Glacier Skywalk is a Nice attraction in the Columbia Ice fields. It starts at the Glacier Discovery Centre and involves a short bus ride to the actual Glacier Skywalk platform. The installed interpretive centre and glass-bottomed Skywalk actually overlooks the beautiful Valley and waterfalls.

See below for a transcript from the video:
One of the things you'll experience during your Scenic trip through Canada is to be found along the picturesque Ice-land Parkway. A drive so beautiful it has been listed as one of Canada's national treasures.
We start our day with an adrenaline-pumping visit to the Athabasca skywalk. A glass walkway that provides a once-in-a-lifetime view of the Canadian Rockies. In the heart of the Columbia Ice-field.
Technically speaking, all that separates you from a 280 metre drop is a structure made of glass, steel, and rock, so bear thatin mind as you might want to tread nice and carefully.
Our next stop is something you need to see to the believe. We're heading to the Athabasca glacier. Our glacier guide Liz ensures we get their safely in our ice explorer.
“You want to think of the ice-field as a big lake, a big frozen lake. The Athabasca river is more like a river that flows out of that lake. So all of the ice that gets spilled on the ice-field comes down into the glacier.”
So back behind us here is the Columbia Ice-field that is technically 215 square kilometres of pure frozen lake. During the winter months the snow falls, and in the summer, it can’t melt quickly enough. So that ice is then pushed on over the edge of the ridge and that forms the Athabasca glacier.
Athabasca is the most visited glacier on the North American continent but thankfully you're traveling with Scenic, which means you beat the crowds.
And there's one more experience you must try, the most pristine drinking water in the world.
No matter where you go in the world Scenic always aims to give you one-in-a-lifetime experiences and because I'm here with Scenic, I feel like it’s all mine.
You're going to love it!

Athabasca Glacier, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada
The Athabasca Glacier is one of the six principal 'toes' of the Columbia Icefield, located in the Canadian Rockies.
The Athabasca is the most-visited glacier on the North American continent. Situated across from the Icefield Centre, its ice is in continuous motion, creeping forward at the rate of several centimeters per day. Spilling from the Columbia Icefield over three giant bedrock steps, the glacier flows down the valley like a frozen, slow-moving river. Because of a warming climate, the Athabasca Glacier has been receding or melting for the last 125 years. Losing half its volume and retreating more than 1.5 kms, the shrinking glacier has left a moonscape of rocky moraines in its wake.
Caution - The glacier is dangerous! People have been killed falling into deep, hidden cracks called crevasses in the glacier. For your safety do not cross the barriers.
