Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years, and its earliest human presence starting somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennia BC.[Classical Athens was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus, which had been a distinct city prior to its 5th century BC incorporation with Athens. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum, it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely because of its cultural and political impact on the European continent, and in particular the Romans. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece. In 2015, Athens was ranked the world's 29th richest city by purchasing power and the 67th most expensive[ in a UBS study.

City is a city with a glorious history, a city revered by goods and people a like. Capital of Greece, Athens a charming city.
Museums and various activities are not lacking in this European capital. Historically and modernly, Athens is a city that has many strengths.
When we think of Athens, the first thing that comes to mind is the image of the Acropolis hill with the Parthenon at its peak.
This monument is considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and you will quickly see why.
The Parthenon is undoubtedly the emblem of the Greek capital, the hill being visible from all over the city.
The Acropolis is home to several majestic majestic monuments, the most famous being the Parthenon. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Athens, the protective goddess of the city.
There are cities that defy irreversible and history, cities that seem born the same day in time that keep the memories of the past so alive that you crack and infuriate you.
Among them, the capital of Greece boasts the most glorious history in the world and has an impressive cultural baggage. Athens is a divine city that fascinates archaeologists, historians and tourists alike.
More than 3,000 years ago, when Athens was taken in the arms of history, people with other dreams, other ideals, and other beliefs walked on this blessed land.
You yourself know a traveler, among so many coming and going out of this world. But in the capital of Greece, the illusion of eternity will sweep you up like a chill.
You will feel like a god, with past and present at the feet. Prepare for an exciting experience, somewhere on the border between myth and reality.
The ancient city of Athens, whose outline we can still draw, was a powerful city-state, as well as a center of art, study, and philosophy. It is the place where democracy and the cradle of the most important foreignization of the ancient world were born.
It is also the home of the most enlightened minds of antiquity, whether politicians, philosophers or writers. Socrates, Sophocles, Pericles are just a few names of Athenians who have changed the world.
If you are passionate about philosophy and want to feel inspirational, you can visit Plato's Academy and Aristotel's High School, but also the National University of Kapodistrian, the oldest and most beautiful university in Southern Europe.
Athens is proud of its cultural richness and carefully preserves its formidable buildings from ancient times.
The Acropolis Hill is the most important attraction in the city, ranked among the seven wonders of the modern world and consequently the place that every tourist in Athens needs to visit from the start.
In translation, the Acropolis meant the top city. From his height he seems to watch the modern city of Athens. In 1987 it was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Here at the Sacred Rock, as it is called the place of the ancient Greek city, history meets the legend. Here is Parthenon and other important tourist attractions.
The Parthenon is regarded as a symbol of ancient Greece and Athenian democracy and a landmark for the beginning of Western civilization. He replaced an older temple of Athens, the Pre-Parthenon or the Old Parthenon, which was destroyed during the invasion of the Persians in 480 BC.
On the southern slope of the Acropolis there is the ancient religious, artistic and intellectual center.
A beautiful view from the Acropolis of Athens, Greece. The Acropolis is the one historical site you can't miss.
The term acropolis means upper city and many of the city states of ancient Greece are built around an acropolis where the inhabitants can go as a place of refuge in times of invasion.
The Parthenon and other main buildings on the Acropolis were built by Pericles in the fifth century BC as a monument to the cultural and political achievements of the inhabitants of Athens.

The Parthenon, dedicated by the Athenians to Athena Parthenos, the patron of their city, is the most magnificent creation of Athenian democracy at the height of its power.
It is also the finest monument on the Acropolis in terms of both conception and execution.
Built between 447 and 438 BC, as part of the greater Periklean building project, this so-called Periklean Parthenon replaced an earlier marble temple, begun after the victory at the battle of Marathon at approximately 490 BC and destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC.
This temple had replaced the very first Parthenon (Parthenon I) of c. 570 BC. The Periklean Parthenon was designed by architects Iktinos and Kallikrates, while the sculptor Pheidias supervised the entire building program and conceived the temple's sculptural decoration and chryselephantine statue of Athena.
The Parthenon is a double peripteral Doric temple with several unique and innovative architectural features.
The temple proper is divided into pronaos, cella and opisthodomos, with a separate room at the west end, and is surrounded by a pteron with eight columns on each of the short sides and seventeen columns on the long ones.
The columns had the same width as those of Parthenon II, so that use was made of the material prepared for it, even though the new temple was much broader than its predecessor.
The interior demonstrates an innovative approach to both new and old elements: inside the cella a double pi-shaped colonnade established a background for the gold and ivory statue of Athena Parthenos, which showed the goddess in full armour carrying Nike to the Athenians in her right hand.
The west room, where the city's treasures were kept, had four Ionic columns. The two-sloped wooden roof had marble tiles, marble palmete-shaped false antefixes along the edge of its long sides and false spouts in the shape of lion heads at the corners.
Marble statues adorned the corners of the pediments and large, ornate palmetes their apex. The pediments were decorated with sculptural compositions inspired from the life of the goddess Athena.
The east pediment depicted the birth of the goddess, who sprang from the head of her father, Zeus, before an assembly of the Olympian gods, while the west pediment showed Athena and Poseidon disputing for the possession of the city of Athens before the gods, heroes and mythical kings of Attica.
Ninety-two metopes alternating with triglyphs were placed above the epistyle of the outer colonnade and under the architrave.
All of them were adorned with reliefs, the earliest sculptures of the Parthenon. Their themes were derived from legendary battles: the Gigantomachy was depicted on the eastern side, the Trojan War on the northern side, the Amazonomachy on the western side and the Centauromachy on the southern side.
The frieze, an element of the Ionic order, brilliantly added to this Doric temple along the top of the cella, pronaos and opisthodomos, depicted the splendid procession of the Panathinaia, the greatest festival of Athens in honour of Athena.
Under Turkish rule it became a mosque. In 1687, during the siege of the Acropolis by Morozini, the Parthenon was bombarded and largely destroyed.
A vast conservation and restoration program of the monuments of the Acropolis, including the Parthenon, is currently under way since 1975 by the Service of Restoration of the Monuments of the Acropolis in collaboration with the First Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, under the supervision of the Committee for the Conservation of the Monuments of the Acropolis.
For more than 2500 years a landmark and symbol of one of the most influential European cultures, the Acropolis, has towered above the rooftops of Athens.

TRIP TO ATHENS - GREECE
Athens (/ˈæθɨnz/;[1] Modern Greek: Αθήνα, Athína, IPA: [aˈθina], Katharevousa: Ἀθῆναι, Athine, Ancient Greek: Ἀθῆναι, Athēnai), is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens dominates the Attica periphery and is one of the world's oldest cities, as its recorded history spans around 3,400 years. Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum,[2][3] it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy,[4][5] largely due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC on the rest of the then known European continent.[6] Today a cosmopolitan metropolis, modern Athens is central to economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural life in Greece and it is rated as an Alpha world city.[7] In 2008, Athens was ranked the world's 32nd richest city by purchasing power[8] and the 25th most expensive[9] in a UBS study.
The Greek capital has a population of 655,780[10] (796,442 back in 2004)[11] within its administrative limits[12] and a land area of 39 km2 (15 sq mi).[13] The urban area of Athens (Greater Athens and Greater Piraeus) extends beyond the administrative municipal city limits, with a population of 3,074,160 (in 2011),[14] over an area of 412 km2 (159 sq mi).[13] According to Eurostat, the Athens Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) is the 7th most populous LUZ in the European Union (the 4th most populous capital city of the EU) with a population of 4,013,368 (in 2004).
The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon, widely considered a key landmark of early Western civilization. The city also retains a vast variety of Roman and Byzantine monuments, as well as a smaller number of remaining Ottoman monuments projecting the city's long history across the centuries. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. Landmarks of the modern era, dating back to the establishment of Athens as the capital of the independent Greek state in 1833, include the Hellenic Parliament (19th century) and the Athens Trilogy consisting of the National Library of Greece, the Athens University and the Academy of Athens. Athens was the host city of the first modern-day Olympic Games in 1896, and 108 years later it welcomed home the 2004 Summer Olympics.[15] Athens is home to the National Archeological Museum, featuring the world's largest collection of ancient Greek antiquities, as well as the new Acropolis Museum.
The city of Athens contains a variety of different architectural styles, ranging from Greco-Roman, Neo-Classical, to modern. They are often to be found in the same areas, as Athens is not marked by a uniformity of architectural style. Many of the most prominent buildings of the city are either Greco-Roman or neo-classical in styling. Some of the neo-classical structures to be found are public buildings erected during the mid-19th century, under the guidance of Theophil Freiherr von Hansen and Ernst Ziller, and include the Athens Academy, Athens City Hall, Greek Parliament, Old Parliament (1875--1932) (Now the National Historical Museum),[50] University of Athens, and Zappeion Hall.
Beginning in the 1930s, the International style and other architectural movements such as Bauhaus and Art Deco began to exert an influence on almost all Greek architects, and many buildings both public and private were constructed in accordance with these styles. Localities with a great number of such buildings include Kolonaki, and some areas of the centre of the city; neighbourhoods developed in this period include Kypseli.
In the 1950s and 1960s during the vast extension and development of Athens, modern architecture played a very important role. The centre of Athens was largely rebuilt, leading to the demolition of a number of neoclassical buildings. The architects of this era employed materials such as glass, marble and aluminium, while some blended modern and classical elements. After World War II, internationally known architects to have designed and built in the city included Walter Gropius, with his design for the US Embassy, and, amongst others, Eero Saarinen, in his postwar design for the east terminal of the Ellinikon Airport.
Notable Greek architects of the 1930s--1960s included Konstantinos Doxiadis, Dimitris Pikionis, Pericles A. Sakellarios, Aris Konstantinidis and others.
Photos and video were taken with a Nikon COOLPIX P100, not the newer Nikon COOLPIX P500. But performance and features should be almost identical.

Walking in Athens - Cruise Tour from Piraeus
Cruise tour to Athens - Royal caribbean cruise stop in Piraeus March 22, 2017
We had been told that there was a X80 express bus from the cruise terminal to Syntagma Square. Bought a X80 ticket in a kiosk at the terminal - € 4.50 for the whole day. Went to the bus stop - there were lots of buses, but no X80. Back to the ticket office to get to know that X80 were not running so early in the season, but we had to take a city bus to Piraeus Station and then the metro to Athens. Easy, we were told - except that most information was in Greek with Cyrillic letters !!! We took a city bus, got off at the fifth stop, walked to Piraeus Station and took the metro to Monastiraki right at the Avissinias Square and Plaka, in the center of Athens. In the train information thankfully is in English. Started the trip to go along the main shopping street of Ermou to Syntagma Square with Vouli building that houses the Greek parliament and the presidential residence. In front of the tomb of the unknown soldier stood two National Guards - Evzones - wary. Continue through the National Park to the ruins at Agora. We had a 'cappuccino break' from which we could see the Acropolis. Went through Plaka and some incredibly interesting old streets and houses. In Plaka we did stop at a local restaurant where we got musaka, before heading back to the metro to Piraeus.
We only saw the Parthenon temple on the Acropolis and Agios Georgios chapel on Lycabettos mountain from the distance.

This was my very first walking tour video. I apologize for the shaky footage.
The film chronologically progresses from morning to night, showing daily life around Athens and Piraeus.
For those planning on visiting, those who’d like to visit but cannot or those who might be nostalgic and want to re-live their past visits / life there, hopefully this film shall satisfy, time and time again.
Filmed in December 2010.
