[Wikipedia] Athlone to Mullingar Cycleway
The Athlone to Mullingar Cycleway (also known as Old Rail Trail) is a long-distance cycling and walking trail in County Westmeath, which forms a section of the Dublin-Galway Greenway. It is a 40 kilometres long rail-trail over the disused Athlone-Mullingar rail line beginning in Athlone and ending in Mullingar. A new bridge is planned for Athlone.
The Moate-Garrycastle section was officially opened by Taoiseach Enda Kenny in October 2015. In September 2015 the Westmeath Independent reported that the greenway could provide a €15m boost to the local economy.
The section has been extended up to Ballymahon road (White gates) in December 2016 and will eventually extend into Athlone town.
Plans, by a community development organisation in Kilbeggan, County Westmeath, are underway to connect the Greenway to the Offaly Cycleways at Kilbeggan with a greenway to Tullamore, County Offaly. Work is planned to begin by summer 2016.

Cycling 49km in the Rain! The Athlone-Mullingar Greenway
Sorry about the quality, there is rain on the lens most of the time, but I thought it was worth a share because, you know, sometimes you just gotta cycle 49km in the rain! With friends by your side and a smile on your face, because that is what experimenting with adventure is all about of course :-)
Freedom & Fresh Air on the Old Rail Trail Greenway - Mullingar to Athlone
Safety, freedom and fresh air family fun on the Old Rail Trail Greenway. The route follows the old railway line for over 40kms all the way to Mullingar and because it’s for bikes and pedestrians only, it couldn’t be safer. Plus there are no hills so it’s easy on little legs too. There are entry and exit points every few kilometres so there are plenty of places to stop and explore along the way.
