In Grande Rue, one of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods of Haiti's capital Port au Prince, the Artist Resistance Movement lets local kids experiment with different styles and mediums to create art. Founding artist Andre Eugene's own idiosyncratic wood and nail sculptures, created with recycled objects and human sculls, have been shown in art galleries in London, Chicago, Paris and Miami. Atis Rezistans' Romel and Alex on Art in Haiti's Schools
Romel and Alex are budding artists from the Grand Rue neighborhood in downtown Port-au-Prince. They are mentored by André Eugène and Jean Hérard Celeur, who work with a cadré of local youth building an artistic movement which addresses the harsh realities of poverty. Their work is characterized by the use of discarded materials turned into powerful sculptures and reliefs often with voudou and fetish themes. Their studio and André's home have become a Gedde garden.

An introduction to Vodou music and Rara, by Gabriel Toso: Tanbou prete pa janm fè bon dans (A borrowed drum never makes good dancing) Music is to Vodou what water is to our bodies or fire to our hearts: all embracing, all inflaming. The spirits of Vodou are called upon and energised by the inexhaustible rhythms of Africa. Brought by the slaves to the New World, and merged with indigenous and European traditions, their magical power is the soundtrack of Vodou itself, its life-force. Dancing, singing, praying are all fundamental aspects of Vodou; but above all it is the drumming that plays a major role during the ceremonies, an invitation to the lwas (gods) to join and partake in the rituals. Like the heartbeat of an infant in its mother's womb or the vibrations of our planet, the percussions of the tanbou (drum) are at once instrument and creator. Different batteries of drums correspond to different rites, countless rhythms to a multitude of nations of laws. The drum is not only a musical instrument but a sacred object, an expression of the divine. Its sound guides the initiates to their appointment with the spirit world. Rara festivals are yearly celebrations that begin following Carnival during the Catholic Lent season, when the activity of the Vodou temples is at its quietest. During those six weeks Rara bands parade for miles playing music, dancing, and performing rituals for Afro-Haitian laws, while wearing specific costumes and using a variety of musical instruments. Probably originated in Haiti during the colonial period, Rara bands and their vast repertoire of songs are both politically and socially engaging while keeping an amusing, irreverent, and at times risqué personality. Traditionally connected with a Vodou temple, Rara bands leave the ceremonial spaces to interact in the public sphere through parading, thus reminding both participants and spectators of the physical presence of the lwas. – Gabriel Toso, London, 3 November 2017.

Haiti sculptors forge reputation with junk art
(11 Apr 2016) A collective of Haitian artists who have dubbed themselves Atis Rezistans have become celebrated in the international art world by creating striking sculptures out of scrapped car parts, cast-off toys and even human skulls found in crumbling mausoleums.
One of those artists and a founding member of the collective is Andre Eugene, who recycles whatever useful scraps he can find to give a raw, physical shape to the spiritual world of Voodoo and weigh in on the country's chronic political and economic troubles.
Over the last decade, the work of Atis Rezistans has been exhibited in cities such as Paris, London, and Los Angeles.
There are even sculptures included in the permanent collections of museums, including the Frost Art Museum in Miami.
But Eugene says being famous has not improved his financial situation.
Imagine, I'm very famous here and then look at my situation. Look at my studio, Eugene said from the concrete yard in a poor neighbourhood, shortly after returning to Haiti from an exhibit of a major piece in Milan.
The Haitian artist hopes that the praise gathered for the group he founded with Celeur Jean-Herard, who has since departed the collective, can now translate into enough earnings to upgrade his yard's musty museum and improve the lives of members.

One Hundred For Haiti: An Overview
Tyson Sadler speaks about the key focus areas of One Hundred For Haiti. One Hundred For Haiti is a global collective of individuals, artists, businesses, and organizations who are providing direct action, humanitarian aid through relief initiatives and rebuilding projects to help in the healing process of post-earthquake Haiti. The group is devoted to ongoing development in Haiti and have already, in the year since our inception, been directly responsible for sending over fifteen tons of food to Haiti, as well as coordinating logistics for the delivery and distribution of an additional ten tons of medical and other supplies, stocking the shelves of a medical clinic in one of Port au Prince's poorer neighborhoods. The group has supported development projects for rural communities and has also provided funding for emergency health care for Haitian citizens as well as evacuation to the USA for stranded Haitian Americans after the earthquake. To facilitate this work, we have accepted donations as small as a single dollar and as large as many thousands of dollars and our work on the ground stems from that support. The assistance we provide comes from our own actions and through our direct involvement with other humanitarian activists in Haiti. We are an officially recognized Washington State Charity.
